Those results measure different things and should not be merged into a single reliability ranking.
Which midsize pickup ranks highest for dependability?
The Toyota Tacoma leads the midsize pickup segment in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. That study is the strongest direct evidence here for long-term dependability, so Tacoma is the best-supported answer if reliability means dependability as measured in that study.
The finding applies to the study’s ranking, not every Tacoma model year, configuration, or individual vehicle. J.D. Power’s current ranking page cautions that it can carry forward a previous model year’s rating until new consumer survey data is available. Confirm the study year and model year behind any rating rather than assuming a page labeled with the current model year contains new data.
Why do other rankings name different trucks?
Initial quality: Nissan Frontier
In J.D. Power’s distinct 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study, the Nissan Frontier is the highest-ranked midsize pickup for initial quality. Initial quality and longer-term dependability are different measures; the Frontier result does not overturn Tacoma’s lead in the dependability study.

When comparing candidates, check the study and model year behind each reliability claim, distinguish dependability from initial quality and overall scores, and match the specific configuration to how you plan to use the truck. The available evidence supports Tacoma as the dependability-study leader, not a complete reliability verdict for every current model.
