Ambarella announced two 5-nanometer AI systems-on-chip for in-vehicle fleet telematics at AutoSens USA on May 21, 2024. The CV75AX targets AI dash cams, while the CV72AX targets multi-camera vehicle gateways. Ambarella says they add transformer and vision-language-model (VLM) capability, higher CPU and memory bandwidth, integrated video processing and fanless operation. The announcement describes semiconductor platforms and design activity—not broadly available, priced fleet products with published independent benchmarks.
What Ambarella announced
The two chips are built on Samsung Foundry’s 5nm FinFET process and use Ambarella’s CVflow 3.0 AI engine. Both are intended to analyze camera data inside the vehicle, so a telematics product can classify events locally instead of uploading every video stream to the cloud.

| SoC | Primary role | Ambarella’s announced claims |
|---|---|---|
| CV75AX | AI dash cams | Up to 2× the prior generation’s AI performance; transformer networks; ADAS, driver monitoring and more complex driver-scoring models |
| CV72AX | Vehicle gateways | Up to 6× the prior generation’s AI performance; support for up to 10 cameras; vision transformers, multimodal VLM analysis and multichannel video pre-categorization |
The “up to” figures are vendor comparisons with the respective previous generation. Ambarella did not publish the workload, model, precision, latency or power conditions behind those numbers, so they should not be treated as universal application-level speedups.
Ambarella said designs had been secured and leading telematics providers were evaluating the devices, but it did not name customers. The release provided no public unit pricing or mass-production timetable.

CV75AX versus CV72AX: dash cam or gateway?
CV75AX: a camera-centric processor
A dash cam normally combines one or several cameras with local recording, forward-facing ADAS functions and driver monitoring. The CV75AX is positioned for a device that must process the road scene and the driver in the same compact enclosure. Ambarella links its additional AI headroom to transformer-based networks and more sophisticated driver-scoring models.
CV72AX: a multi-camera edge computer
A vehicle gateway aggregates more camera feeds and vehicle data, connects to cellular equipment and can serve as the central video-analysis box. Ambarella says the CV72AX supports up to 10 cameras and can pre-categorize multichannel video before selected clips or metadata are sent elsewhere.
“Up to 10 cameras” is an input-support claim, not proof that a finished product can record ten cameras at maximum resolution and frame rate while running VLM inference and transmitting over 5G. The final throughput depends on camera interfaces, resolution, frame rate, compression, storage, software scheduling and modem capacity.

Why transformers matter in fleet video
Convolutional vision models are often optimized for predefined object classes and scenarios. Transformer-based vision models can represent relationships across a wider scene, which may help with difficult or unfamiliar conditions. Ambarella says this approach can improve accuracy and reduce false positives without requiring a separate training exercise for every object.
That is a claimed platform benefit, not an independently measured result. Transformers still require suitable training data, validation and deployment optimization. Fleet buyers should request confusion matrices and false-alert rates by event, weather, lighting condition, vehicle type and camera position rather than relying on a headline architecture label.
What a vision-language model could add
Ambarella says the CV72AX can support multimodal VLM analysis for instant event alerts, multichannel video pre-categorization, natural-language searches and more efficient video analysis. In practical terms, a gateway could associate visual content with textual event descriptions before uploading selected evidence.

This describes an on-device or in-vehicle processing capability, not a self-contained chatbot. The announcement does not identify the VLM models, parameter counts, memory requirements, quantization method, latency or software stack. A useful natural-language search service would also need synchronized timestamps, reliable storage, event metadata, an indexing layer, retention rules and a user interface.
Hardware changes shared by both SoCs
CVflow 3.0 and higher CPU capacity
Both chips use CVflow 3.0 and are specified by Ambarella with twice the CPU performance of the prior generation. The company pairs that compute increase with support for transformer workloads, conventional CNN/DNN detection and classification, and integrated image and video processing.
LPDDR5 and double DRAM bandwidth
LPDDR5 support and twice the previous generation’s DRAM bandwidth can help move several video streams and model data through the processor while potentially improving memory efficiency. The announcement does not provide a complete system throughput table, frame-rate guarantee or power figure.
USB 3.2 for peripherals and 5G modems
A faster USB 3.2 interface is intended to support 5G modems and other peripherals. USB 3.2 does not include a modem, antenna, carrier plan or certification. Those remain separate hardware, regulatory, thermal and software decisions.
Integrated imaging and video encoding
The SoCs combine image processing with H.264 and H.265 encoding and multichannel recording. Integration can reduce board space and the number of discrete components needed for a camera or gateway, while allowing human-viewable video and machine-vision processing on the same platform.

Ambarella says its AI-based high-dynamic-range processing is now available for fleet-telematics systems. HDR can preserve useful detail when bright sunlight meets deep shadows, such as at a tunnel entrance, in a dark cabin viewed through a bright windshield, around nighttime headlights or at a loading dock. It does not by itself correct glare, low-light noise, motion blur, dirty lenses or poor mounting.

Why fanless operation matters in fleet hardware
Vehicle electronics must tolerate heat, cold, vibration, dust, restricted enclosure volume and long operating hours. Ambarella says both SoCs retain fanless operation and can operate across a -40°C to 105°C ambient-temperature range.
That is a claim about the SoC platform, not an automatic qualification for a complete dash cam or gateway. The camera sensors, serializers, DRAM, flash, modem, power supply, enclosure and storage may each have narrower limits. Product validation must also address power transients, thermal paths, vibration and shock, electromagnetic compatibility, cybersecurity and functional-safety requirements where applicable.
What fleet operators could gain from local AI
- Faster alerts: Local inference can avoid a round trip to a cloud service for time-sensitive events.
- Less cellular traffic: A device can upload event clips and metadata instead of continuous raw video, potentially reducing bandwidth use.
- Operation during poor connectivity: Core detection can continue while a vehicle has weak or intermittent coverage.
- More selective retention: Local categorization can prioritize incidents for storage and review.
- Privacy advantages: Keeping more raw footage in the vehicle can reduce how much personally identifiable video leaves it.
These benefits require a complete device-management and cloud architecture. Model updates, audit logs, encryption, storage policies and failure handling remain the product developer’s responsibility.

Important limitations and deployment risks
False positives are not eliminated
Transformer support does not guarantee accurate alerts. Buyers should test night scenes, rain, glare, sunglasses, masks, hats, unusual seating positions, different vehicle classes and varied camera placements.
Driver scoring is application-specific
The CV75AX can provide compute for more complex scoring models, but a “driver score” depends on the behaviors selected, calibration, road and vehicle type, camera position, company policy and whether the system distinguishes unsafe conduct from unavoidable road conditions.
Edge inference adds operational work
Models must fit available memory and compute. Updating them across a fleet requires secure over-the-air delivery, version control and rollback. Local inference can also make debugging and independent auditing harder.

Automotive positioning is not full-system qualification
A finished product still needs qualification of sensors, storage, modem, enclosure, power protection, thermal design, vibration, EMC and security. “Supports VLMs” likewise does not supply a trained model, fleet dashboard, cloud API or compliance policy.

Ambarella’s automotive portfolio covers video and AI processors for intelligent cameras, ADAS, electronic mirrors, driver and cabin monitoring, fleet management and autonomous-driving applications. Its CV3-AD family is a separate, higher-end line aimed at centralized multi-sensor ADAS and autonomous-driving workloads such as perception, sensor fusion and path planning. The May 2024 announcement is specifically about fleet dash cams and vehicle gateways, not a CV3-AD replacement.
Ambarella’s public automotive page lists CV72AX and CV75A-family products with image processing, video encode/decode and CVflow capabilities. Detailed product briefs are registration-gated, and the public page does not provide a complete CV72AX-versus-CV75AX comparison.

How alternative architectures differ
| Platform | Typical positioning | How it differs from the AX parts |
|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride | Scalable ADAS and automated-driving compute, software and safety architecture | Broader vehicle-domain and mixed-criticality positioning rather than a compact fleet dash-cam/gateway focus |
| NXP Automotive Edge AI and S32 processors | Heterogeneous compute, networking, safety, security and software-defined-vehicle integration | Strong fit for gateways, zonal controllers and vehicle networking; not presented in the cited material as a direct VLM-focused substitute |
| NVIDIA DRIVE AGX | High-performance autonomous-driving compute and a large developer ecosystem | Generally aimed at larger sensor-fusion and autonomy systems than a power- and cost-sensitive fleet camera |
These are not apples-to-apples substitutes. The right choice depends on camera count, compute demand, safety goals, software ecosystem, power budget, thermal design, supply commitments and total system cost.
Buying and qualification checklist
- Define the workload: List cameras, resolutions, frame rates, ADAS events, driver-monitoring functions, recording channels and any VLM tasks.
