Alef Aeronautics is not launching a public flying-car service. The San Mateo, California startup said on August 26, 2025, that it had agreements to begin controlled operations at Half Moon Bay Airport and Hollister Airport. Those operations involve testing and demonstrations of its roadable electric aircraft—not passenger bookings, routine customer flights, or confirmed vehicle deliveries.
The announcement is a meaningful development milestone, but “start operations” is easy to overread. Alef is establishing airport locations where it can test driving, vertical takeoff and landing, forward flight, and interaction with conventional aircraft.
What Alef actually announced
According to Alef’s August 26, 2025 announcement, the company will operate at:
- Half Moon Bay Airport in California
- Hollister Airport in California
Alef says the work will include ground driving, vertical takeoff, forward flight, vertical landing, maneuvering on the ground and in the air, and testing how the vehicle operates alongside common airport traffic. The company also mentions media and investor demonstrations and the possibility of future fleet bases.

Conventional aircraft will have priority at the airports. Alef says it will develop procedures to alert other aircraft to its ground and airborne movements.
That makes the airport agreements a testing and aviation-integration milestone—not evidence that an airline, air-taxi network, or retail delivery program has begun.
Which flying car is being tested?
| Vehicle | Role |
|---|---|
| Model Zero Ultralight | The initial aircraft identified for the new airport operations. It is a development and test platform. |
| Model A | Alef’s proposed commercial road-and-air vehicle. |
| Model Z | A future lower-cost concept mentioned in earlier coverage, not a currently available product. |
Alef markets the Model A as an electric vertical-takeoff aircraft that can also drive on roads. However, the announced airport work is expected to begin with the Model Zero Ultralight. Testing a prototype or development aircraft does not establish that the commercial Model A is ready for production or ordinary public use.
Is it really the world’s first flying car?
That depends on the definition. Alef describes its vehicle as the first road-legal passenger car capable of both driving on roads and performing vertical takeoff and forward flight.
That is a company positioning claim, not an uncontested historical or legal designation. Earlier projects have combined road and flight capability, although they differed in design, certification, practicality, production status, or operating method. The safer description is that Alef is developing one of the first vehicles intended to function as both a road car and a vertical-takeoff aircraft.

What does “operations” mean here?
For this announcement, “operations” refers to controlled activity at airports, including:
- Driving the vehicle on the ground
- Vertical takeoff and landing tests
- Forward-flight testing
- Ground and airborne maneuvering
- Interaction with conventional airport traffic
- Demonstrations for media and investors
It does not mean:
- A published air-taxi schedule
- Open passenger bookings or ticket sales
- Routine flights for paying customers
- A certified production fleet
- Mass production or confirmed customer deliveries
- Permission to take off from arbitrary roads, driveways, or private property
What regulatory approval does Alef have?
Earlier reporting described an Alef prototype receiving an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate. That is not the same as unrestricted approval for commercial passenger service.
A special airworthiness certificate can authorize limited operations for purposes such as development, research, exhibition, or demonstration, subject to specific conditions. It should not be confused with:
Recommended Free Tools
- Full type certification of the production aircraft
- Production certification
- A standard airworthiness certificate for unrestricted operations
- Road-vehicle approval in every intended market
- Authorization to carry paying passengers commercially
The available evidence supports limited aircraft-operation approval, but the airport announcement does not establish that the commercial Model A has completed all applicable certification requirements. A vehicle also needs to satisfy separate road, aviation, operational, insurance, and local-use requirements before it could function as an everyday transport product.
For background on the limited aviation approval, see Piloot & Vliegtuig’s report.

Can you buy or ride the Model A?
Alef has accepted reservations, but a reservation is not a confirmed vehicle purchase. Under the company’s preorder agreement:
- A general preorder deposit is listed at $150.
- A priority preorder deposit is listed at $1,500.
- The deposits are described as refundable until a final purchase agreement is signed.
- The preorder does not guarantee delivery.
- It does not guarantee a final price, production slot, delivery date, or specific configuration.
- It is not itself a sales contract.
Earlier coverage commonly cited a Model A target price of about $300,000. That should be treated as a previously reported target, not a locked retail price. The preorder terms make clear that final pricing is not fixed until a definitive purchase agreement.

What Alef claims the vehicle can do
Earlier reports described company-claimed targets of approximately:
- 220 miles of road range
- 110 miles of flight range
- Room for two occupants
- Vertical takeoff and landing
These are claimed specifications or targets, not independently verified production results. The two range figures also should not be added together. Road and flight travel consume energy differently, and a real trip would need to account for payload, weather, flight profile, battery reserve, road distance, and regulatory operating limits.

Why does a flying car need an airport?
Vertical takeoff does not automatically mean a vehicle can operate anywhere. Airports provide a controlled environment for testing:
- How a roadable aircraft transitions between driving and flight
- How it communicates with other aircraft
- Obstacle avoidance and traffic awareness
- Takeoff and landing procedures
- Emergency responses
- Charging, inspection, and operational support
The choice of airports highlights the gap between technical capability and practical deployment. An aircraft may be able to lift vertically, yet still require an approved operating area, trained personnel, suitable weather, airspace compliance, insurance, and local permission.
Routine home-to-home flights would face additional issues, including aircraft certification, pilot or operator requirements, airspace rules, obstacle clearance, noise limits, zoning, landing-site permissions, and liability. The announced facilities therefore point to controlled airport testing, not unrestricted takeoffs from public roads or private driveways. San Mateo County provides general information about its airports here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why building one vehicle for roads and flight is difficult
Weight and complexity
A dual-purpose vehicle must carry road equipment such as wheels, suspension, steering, brakes, and crash structures alongside flight systems, motors, propellers, batteries, and aircraft controls. That combination creates a weight penalty compared with a purpose-built car or aircraft.
Best Value

- 5.9 inch x 2.2 inch x 1.8 inch(size)
- The two sides of doors could be opened, front and back covercould be opened too
- You can pull back the car, then it can move forwards with Lights and Sound
- Very suitable as children 4 years and up toys for birthday,Christmas gift, new year. Also it can be a gift for your boyfriend
Limited energy flexibility
Battery energy used for driving is unavailable for flight, and aviation requires appropriate reserves. The vehicle must also manage charging, thermal conditions, payload, weather, and the greater energy demands of takeoff.
Two regulatory environments
A roadable aircraft must satisfy requirements for both road use and aviation. Passing a limited flight test does not automatically authorize ordinary road use, while being road-legal does not certify the vehicle as a production aircraft.
Safety and traffic integration
Alef has discussed features such as AI-based obstacle recognition, but the announcement does not provide independent safety validation or quantified reliability data. A viable system would need to address propulsion or rotor failures, battery thermal events, loss of control, communications failures, emergency landing, obstacles, and conflicts with ground and airborne traffic.
What would prove that commercial launch has arrived?
The strongest evidence would include several separate milestones:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Applicable certification of a production aircraft design
- Production certification and confirmed manufacturing capability
- Completed deliveries of production vehicles
- Commercial operating authorization where required
- Public bookings, paying passengers, or a defined route and schedule
- Published operating, insurance, maintenance, and training procedures
- Independent performance and safety data
The August 2025 airport announcement does not establish those milestones. It establishes a location and framework for further testing.
Quick Recap
What to watch next
- Whether tests progress from development platforms to production-representative Model A aircraft
- Whether Alef publishes a clear certification pathway and operating limitations
- Whether it demonstrates repeatable flight operations rather than isolated demonstrations
- Whether customers receive confirmed delivery information instead of only reservation opportunities
- Whether commercial passenger operations receive specific regulatory authorization
