Alef Aeronautics announced a $300,000 pre-sale price for its Model A in 2022 and repeated that figure in 2023; an April 2026 ASME article also described $300,000 as the expected price. Alef’s current page gives no price or delivery terms. Nor does the available evidence establish that a production Model A is approved for ordinary public-road driving or that customer deliveries have begun.
What is the Alef Model A?
The Alef Model A is the vehicle behind the flying-car claim. Alef introduced it in October 2022 as a vehicle designed for both road driving and vertical takeoff. The company says it is developing a car that can drive on streets, take off vertically and fly overhead. Those are design and capability claims, not proof of current approval or performance in customer use. Alef’s current Model A page describes the concept but does not state a current price, order terms or delivery status.
How much does the Alef Model A cost?
The $170,000 figure is not substantiated by the available sources. Alef announced a $300,000 Model A pre-sale price in October 2022 and a $300,000 pre-order price in June 2023. An April 2026 ASME article likewise reported an expected price of $300,000. These are dated announcements and reporting, not a current seller quote or confirmation of the final price. Alef’s present landing page does not publish pricing. Alef’s October 2022 announcement and its June 2023 announcement give the earlier figures; ASME’s April 2026 report gives the later expected price.
A historical pre-order or deposit is not the same as being able to buy a finished vehicle at that amount today. The reviewed sources do not establish current order terms, final purchase price or delivery date.

Is the Model A street-legal?
Not on the evidence available here. Alef has described the Model A as road-drivable, but that description does not establish that a production vehicle is approved for ordinary public-road use. In 2023, Aerospace America reported that Alef and another startup had not obtained NHTSA approvals for public-road operation at that time. That is a historical status report; the sources reviewed do not confirm whether Model A has since received the relevant road approvals. Aerospace America’s 2023 report discusses the approval issue.
Road legality also depends on the applicable jurisdiction and the approvals and registration required there. A company’s intended road use, an aircraft-related certificate or a reservation does not by itself authorize ordinary driving. Buyers should obtain current, jurisdiction-specific documentation for the exact production vehicle before treating it as street-legal.

Does the FAA certificate mean it can fly anywhere?
No. The 2023 FAA certificate cited in coverage was limited in purpose and location, not blanket authorization for customer flights. CBS News reported that it applied to the Armada Model Zero, a related Alef aircraft, rather than establishing general public-flight approval for the production-intended Model A. The FAA described the certificate this way: “This certificate allows the aircraft to be used for limited purposes, including exhibition, research and development. This is not the first aircraft of its kind for which the FAA has issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate.” The statement was reported on July 4, 2023 and concerns that certificate, not general permission to fly a Model A. CBS News’ report identifies the Armada Model Zero and the certificate’s limited scope; Aerospace America also covers the regulatory context.
An aircraft certificate for specified activity is distinct from permission for routine personal flights. The available sources do not establish the Model A’s current aircraft certification status, permitted operations, pilot requirements or where a customer could legally operate one.

What range and performance has Alef announced?
In October 2022, Alef announced a claimed 200 miles of driving range and 110 miles of flight range. Those are manufacturer-stated figures, not results from independent performance testing established in the sources reviewed. Alef’s announcement and current product page describe the vehicle; the available evidence does not provide independently verified range figures or operating conditions for those claims.

The available evidence shows announced pre-orders and development activity, but does not verify completed customer deliveries. Alef said in October 2022 that it planned production and first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2025; a plan announced at the time is not evidence that deliveries occurred. In September 2024, the company reported more than 3,200 pre-orders and agreements with PUCARA Aero and MYC to manufacture a subset of aviation-grade parts it said were intended to be suitable for certification. That reported order count does not establish completed sales or deliveries. Alef’s October 2022 announcement and its September 2024 manufacturing announcement describe those plans and figures.

In August 2025, Alef announced agreements involving Half Moon Bay and Hollister airports for testing integration with common air traffic and exhibitions. The company said the agreements expanded its R&D flight-test locations to five. These are reported testing arrangements, not proof of routine public flights or customer delivery. Alef’s August 2025 announcement describes them.
As of the April 2026 ASME article, the Model A was still described as taking pre-orders. The sources reviewed do not verify current customer deliveries, a production-vehicle road approval or current order terms. Interested buyers should request current written confirmation from Alef about price, deposit and refund terms, delivery timing, and the exact vehicle’s road and flight approvals before committing money.
