More than 726,000 vehicles were covered by two separate U.S. safety campaigns involving BMW, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep—but the campaigns involved different defects. BMW’s recall concerns potentially substituted Takata driver-airbag inflators, while the Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep recall concerns a seat-belt-buckle sensor connection that could affect front-seat airbag deployment.

More than 726,000 vehicles were covered by two separate U.S. safety campaigns announced in July 2024 involving BMW, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep. They were not one shared defect, however. The BMW recall involved potentially substituted Takata driver-airbag inflators that could rupture. The Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep recall involved a seat-belt-buckle sensor connection that could keep a front-seat airbag from deploying as intended.

If you own one of the vehicles listed below, check the vehicle identification number (VIN) through the official NHTSA recall lookup and arrange the repair through an authorized dealer. Recall repairs are free. A model and year alone cannot establish whether a particular vehicle is affected.

The two recalls at a glance

Campaign Vehicles Potential problem Repair
NHTSA 24V-510; Stellantis 82B Approximately 332,000 vehicles initially; later Stellantis service information cited about 341,140 vehicles in its applicable scope Seat-belt-buckle Hall-effect sensor connector may be improperly connected or disrupted, affecting front-seat airbag deployment Dealer repairs the sensor connection at no charge
NHTSA 24V-513 394,029 BMW vehicles A replacement sport or M-Sport steering wheel may contain a Takata PSDI-5 driver-airbag inflator that can rupture BMW inspects the vehicle and replaces the driver-front airbag module when necessary, free of charge

The combined headline figure is approximately 726,029 vehicles, using the original announced populations. The numbers should not be treated as a count of vehicles that will definitely experience a failure. Both campaigns concern a potential defect, and eligibility and repair status are determined by VIN.

Stellantis recall 24V-510: Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep seat-belt sensor problem

Stellantis campaign 82B, listed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as recall 24V-510, covered these vehicles:

  • 2017–2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia
  • 2018–2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
  • 2024 Fiat 500e
  • 2019–2023 Fiat 500X
  • 2019–2023 Jeep Renegade

The issue concerns a Hall-effect sensor in the front seat-belt buckle. Its connector may not have been connected correctly or may become disrupted. That can affect the seat wiring and prevent the front-seat airbag from deploying as intended in a crash.

This is a deployment-performance and wiring problem, not the same Takata inflator-rupture defect involved in the BMW campaign. The risk is that an occupant may not receive the expected protection from the front-seat airbag during a collision. The recall does not mean every airbag in every listed vehicle will fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Stellantis dealers repair it

The available repair procedure calls for replacing the affected connector by wiring the sensor directly to the harness. The procedure is performed on both front-seat sides where applicable. Stellantis authorized dealers perform the repair at no cost to the owner.

Contact an authorized Alfa Romeo, Fiat, or Jeep dealer, use the manufacturer’s recall resources, or check the VIN through NHTSA. Do not try to bypass the airbag system, repair the connector yourself, or treat an airbag warning light as something that can be cleared permanently with a consumer scan tool.

BMW recall 24V-513: possible Takata driver-airbag inflator

BMW of North America reported recall 24V-513 on July 3, 2024. It covered 394,029 vehicles in the United States, principally:

  • 2006–2011 BMW 3 Series sedans, including 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, and 335xi variants
  • 2006–2012 BMW 3 Series sports wagons, including 325xi, 328i, and 328xi variants
  • 2009–2011 BMW 335d sedans

The unusual feature of this campaign is that BMW said the original-equipment airbag did not contain the ammonium-nitrate inflator at issue. The potential problem arose when an owner-installed or replacement steering wheel—particularly a sport or M-Sport wheel—introduced a steering-wheel airbag containing a Takata PSDI-5 inflator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During deployment, an affected inflator can generate excessive internal pressure and rupture. Instead of safely inflating the airbag, the rupture can propel sharp metal fragments toward the driver, causing serious injury or death. Takata inflator risk generally increases as the component ages.

BMW repair

A BMW dealer must inspect the vehicle and, where necessary, replace the driver-front airbag module. BMW’s recall remedy is free. Because the potentially affected part may have been installed during a steering-wheel replacement, do not assume a vehicle is unaffected simply because it has a nonstandard steering wheel or because the current owner did not make the modification.

Why these campaigns should not be combined into one defect

The headline groups the brands together because both campaigns involve occupant-restraint safety and airbags. Mechanically, they are different:

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
  • BMW: a potentially non-original replacement steering wheel may have introduced a Takata driver-airbag inflator. The central hazard is inflator rupture and metal-fragment projection.
  • Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep: a seat-belt-buckle sensor connector may be improperly connected or disrupted. The central hazard is that a front-seat airbag may not deploy as intended.

Neither campaign proves that all vehicles of a listed model have a defective airbag, and neither should be used to infer that the brands share one common faulty component.

What owners should do now

  1. Find the VIN. It is usually visible at the lower driver-side windshield or on the vehicle registration and insurance documents.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. The search is VIN-specific. A model-year search, an OBD-II scan, or the absence of a dashboard warning cannot substitute for an official recall check.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s recall system as well. BMW owners should use BMW’s official recall resources; Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep owners should use the appropriate Stellantis brand resource.
  4. Call an authorized dealer. Tell the service department that the vehicle may have an open recall and ask about parts, scheduling, and transportation arrangements.
  5. Have the free repair completed. Do not buy an aftermarket airbag, replacement inflator, buckle connector, or bypass harness to address a recall.

Airbag and supplemental-restraint-system work involves pyrotechnic components and manufacturer-specific procedures. It should be performed by trained technicians using the recall repair instructions.

Should you drive the vehicle to the dealer?

For these specific campaigns, the safest answer depends on the vehicle’s official recall status and any additional campaigns attached to its VIN. NHTSA’s strongest “do not drive” instructions apply to certain unrepaired Takata recalls designated as stop-drive campaigns. If the VIN lookup displays a stop-drive warning, do not drive the vehicle to the dealer merely because an appointment is available.

Instead, ask the manufacturer or dealer whether the vehicle qualifies for towing, mobile repair, or another approved transportation arrangement. Some official recall guidance indicates that towing or mobile-repair options may be available, but availability depends on the vehicle, location, campaign, and manufacturer. Arrange a tow before driving a stop-drive vehicle.

The BMW campaign described here involves a potentially substituted Takata inflator, but owners should rely on the current VIN result and the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming that every vehicle in the campaign has the same driving restriction. The same principle applies to the Stellantis sensor-connector campaign: use the official status and dealer guidance for the individual vehicle.

Recall status and completion numbers

Aggregate completion figures do not tell an owner whether a particular car is repaired. The latest campaign-specific Stellantis completion report located for this research was updated October 30, 2025. It listed a campaign population of 337,128 and reported 175,249 vehicles remedied through the third quarter of 2025, along with vehicles that were unreachable or removed from the campaign population.

Those figures do not establish the current status of any individual vehicle. Campaign populations can be updated, and a used vehicle may have changed owners or states. Only a VIN search and confirmation from the manufacturer or dealer can show whether the recall remains open.

What an OBD-II scanner can—and cannot—tell you

A consumer OBD-II scanner may read certain diagnostic trouble codes, but it is not a recall database and cannot determine whether a recall campaign is open for a vehicle. A vehicle can have an open recall without storing a code, and clearing a warning light does not complete a recall repair.

Use the VIN lookup for recall eligibility. Use a qualified repair facility for diagnosis of warning lights or supplemental-restraint-system faults. Never disconnect or bypass an airbag warning system to make the dashboard appear normal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for BMW, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep owners

These were two large but separate U.S. recalls: BMW’s 24V-513 campaign addressed potentially substituted Takata driver-airbag inflators in certain older 3 Series vehicles, while Stellantis recall 24V-510/82B addressed a seat-belt-buckle sensor connection in specified Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep models.

Check the VIN through NHTSA and the relevant manufacturer, then obtain the authorized repair at no charge. Do not infer safety from the model year, a previous owner’s assurances, a normal-looking airbag, or an OBD-II scan. If an official lookup shows a Takata stop-drive warning, arrange towing or another manufacturer-approved option rather than driving the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. BMW recall 24V-513 involves potentially substituted Takata driver-airbag inflators in certain replacement sport or M-Sport steering wheels. Stellantis recall 24V-510/82B involves a seat-belt-buckle sensor connector that can affect front-seat airbag deployment.

Are the BMW, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep recalls caused by the same airbag defect?

No. The campaigns identify a potential defect, and recall eligibility is VIN-specific. Check the vehicle through NHTSA and the relevant manufacturer’s official recall system.

Do all listed vehicles definitely have a dangerous airbag?

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The remedies described for both campaigns are free through authorized dealers. Ask the dealer about parts, scheduling, and any transportation assistance.

Does a recall repair cost the owner money?

No. Recall eligibility is tied to the VIN and must be checked through an official recall database or manufacturer VIN service. A scan tool cannot close a recall campaign.

Can an OBD-II scanner confirm whether my vehicle is recalled?

If the official VIN lookup shows a stop-drive warning, do not drive it. Contact the manufacturer or dealer about towing, mobile repair, or another approved arrangement.

Can I drive a vehicle with an unrepaired Takata recall to the dealer?

The Bottom Line

Check the VIN, not just the model and year. BMW’s recall concerns a possible Takata inflator in a replacement steering wheel; Stellantis’ recall concerns a seat-belt-buckle sensor connector. Both repairs are free through authorized dealers, and any official stop-drive instruction should be followed immediately.
