There is no reliable, like-for-like price data here to rank ten classic Universal Japanese Motorcycles (UJMs) by affordability. The term is a historical label, most closely associated with upright, general-purpose Japanese standards of the 1970s—not a formal class or a promise that every bike is interchangeable. Five families worth investigating are the Honda CB750 and CB550, Yamaha XS650, Suzuki GS550, and Kawasaki KZ650. Whether any is affordable depends on your local market, the specific bike’s condition and completeness, and the cost of getting it road-ready.
What “Universal Japanese Motorcycle” means
“Universal Japanese Motorcycle” is a historical label for a style of Japanese standard motorcycle, especially the upright, general-purpose bikes associated with the 1970s. The Honda CB750 is a familiar touchstone for the style, but UJM is not a formal category that makes every Japanese motorcycle—or every bike carrying a standard profile—the same. The term’s history is summarized in a tertiary source, so it is best treated as a useful shorthand rather than a strict definition: Motorcycle Classics on the UJM.
Five classic families to investigate
These are grounded examples of classic Japanese standards, not a verified affordability ranking. A family name alone is not enough to price or assess a bike: check its year, variant, condition, title status, and local parts situation.
Honda CB750
The CB750 is a central historical reference point for the UJM label and a well-known classic standard family. A buyer should compare complete, titled examples with similar years and condition rather than assume that a recognizable model name means a low purchase or restoration cost. Motorcycle Classics discusses the CB750 in the UJM context, while a model guide includes it among classic Japanese motorcycles: Motorcycle.com’s classic Japanese motorcycle guide.

Honda CB550
The CB550 is another classic Japanese standard family cited in secondary model coverage. Before judging a particular example, identify its exact year and variant and investigate parts availability, title, and mechanical condition. The model guide is a starting point, not evidence of current local prices: Motorcycle.com’s classic Japanese motorcycle guide.
Yamaha XS650
The XS650 is a classic twin family that appears in historical industry material and current market listings. Those sources do not establish one universal used price. Check local asking and sold prices, title status, mechanical condition, and modifications; an altered or incomplete bike may require a different budget from a comparable running, complete example. Historical pricing is discussed below, but it should not be mistaken for a present-day value. Cycle Trader XS650 listings are market-specific and change over time.

Suzuki GS550
Suzuki’s archive confirms the GS550 family, and secondary buyer-guide coverage discusses several variants. Confirm the particular year and version, service history, likely maintenance needs, and local parts access before comparing prices. The existence of a family across variants does not establish that every version is equally easy or inexpensive to maintain. Suzuki’s GS550 archive; Motorcycle Classics’ GS550 guide.
Kawasaki KZ650
The KZ650 is cited as a classic Japanese standard family in secondary model coverage. Look up the exact variant and year, then compare local prices and parts availability against the bike’s condition and completeness. The model reference does not provide a current affordability ranking: Motorcycle.com’s classic Japanese motorcycle guide.

What “affordable” can—and cannot—mean
The available figures do not support a comparable current-price table for these classic families. Yamaha’s current U.S. lineup provides a useful new-bike context, not a proxy for used classic prices: the manufacturer lists a 2026 MT-03 at $4,999 MSRP and a 2026 MT-07 at $8,599 MSRP. Yamaha says prices and specifications can change; those MSRPs exclude tax, license, registration, destination, and dealer-installed options. They are new U.S. motorcycle prices, not prices for older UJMs. Yamaha 2026 MT-03; Yamaha 2026 MT-07.
A USITC document records historical specifications and prices; for example, it lists the Yamaha XS650E at a period price of $1,698. That figure belongs to the document’s historical context. It is neither a current asking price nor an inflation-adjusted comparison with today’s bikes. USITC publication 1292.

To make “affordable” meaningful for your search, set a country or region, currency, model-year range, and maximum purchase budget first. Then compare similar local examples, and include likely repairs and parts in the budget. Without those boundaries, a single ranking would mix unlike markets and conditions.

Purchase price is only one part of the decision. An older motorcycle may need small repairs more often, so a low asking price does not by itself establish low ownership cost. A secondary GS550 guide raises this maintenance consideration; it is not a reliability ranking for the GS550 or the other families. Motorcycle Classics’ GS550 guide.

- Completeness and title: Find out whether the motorcycle is complete, running, and titled. Missing components, unresolved title issues, or a non-running condition can change the total cost and time involved.
- Condition and records: Review service records and assess the machine’s actual mechanical condition. Budget for maintenance or repairs that are due rather than treating an old bike as ready to ride based on appearance alone.
- Parts access: Check whether parts for that exact year and variant are obtainable locally or through dependable sources, and consider the cost and wait time before buying.
- Fit and intended use: Consider seat height, weight, riding position, and the kind of riding you plan to do. A bike that is affordable to buy may not be a good match for your experience or needs.
- Brakes and safety equipment: Check the equipment on the specific model year and inspect any modifications. Do not assume that a family name tells you what braking or safety equipment an individual example has today.
Why this is not a ten-bike price ranking
The evidence supports five classic families to investigate, but it does not establish comparable current prices for ten models or a defensible top ten by affordability. Market listings and benchmarks vary by geography and change over time; a model guide can identify candidates but cannot establish what a particular bike will cost to buy and make roadworthy. Adding five more names solely to reach ten would imply a comparison the available price evidence cannot support.
