Affordable Sports Cars: 6 New 2025–2026 Picks Worth Considering

A defensible U.S. new-car comparison supports six 2025–2026 performance picks, from the two-seat Miata to the practical Civic Si and Golf GTI—not ten comparable sports cars.

If you’re shopping for a new performance car in the U.S., the evidence supports six distinct choices—not a defensible list of ten. The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata starts at $30,430, while the 2025 Honda Civic Si starts at $31,045 including destination. The rest span rear-drive coupes, a high-output Mustang, and practical sedan and hatchback alternatives. These are starting prices, not total ownership costs, and the model years and price presentations differ.

Why this shortlist has six cars, not ten

The available model-year and pricing information supports six new-car options with meaningful differences in body style and driving priorities. It does not establish comparable prices or specifications for ten cars. Rather than fill out the headline with unsupported recommendations or guesswork about used-car values, this guide compares the six that can be described responsibly.

Prices below come from different sources and model years, so they are not a single apples-to-apples ranking. Mazda’s 2026 Miata starting MSRP is $30,430; its release says the destination and handling charge became $1,315 effective August 11, 2026 ($1,360 in Alaska). That means the quoted starting MSRP should not be mistaken for an out-the-door figure. Honda gives a more explicit destination-inclusive price for the 2025 Civic Si. For the other vehicles, the listed source figures are identified by source and model year; confirm current manufacturer pricing and destination treatment before buying.

Six affordable performance cars, compared

Car and model year Body style and use Price cited Power and transmission details Best fit
2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Two-seat roadster $30,430 starting MSRP for Sport soft top, Mazda North American Operations, 2026; destination treatment is described above. 181 hp and 151 lb-ft; six-speed manual is standard. Grand Touring also offers a six-speed automatic, according to Mazda. Open-top driving and light, sharp handling; sacrifices cabin and trunk space.
2026 Toyota GR86 Rear-drive coupe $32,695 starting price in Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking; CARFAX lists $32,395 for 2026. A 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison describes a 228-hp rear-wheel-drive coupe with manual or automatic transmission. That is 2025 evidence, not a confirmed 2026 specification here. Coupe form, sharp steering, and a tuned chassis; CARFAX flags rearward visibility and highway road noise.
2026 Subaru BRZ Rear-drive coupe $37,055 in Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking; CARFAX lists $35,860 for 2026. The cited ranking and CARFAX coverage call out a manual; the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison describes a 228-hp engine with manual or automatic. Do not treat those 2025 details as a 2026 specification. Manual-focused handling; rear seating and trunk space are limited, and CARFAX notes tight rear seating.
2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Pony car $33,515 starting price in the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison, which says its comparison prices include destination. 315 hp and 350 lb-ft; Edmunds/AP reports 0–60 mph in 5.6 seconds with the 10-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. More reported power and straight-line pace than the lightweight-coupe approach.
2025 Honda Civic Si Sport sedan $29,950 MSRP plus $1,095 destination, or $31,045 including destination, per American Honda Motor Co.’s 2024 release. 200 hp, 192 lb-ft, six-speed manual; EPA ratings are 27 city / 37 highway / 31 combined mpg. Manual performance with rear-seat usefulness and everyday sedan practicality.
2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance hatchback $33,640 MSRP in the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison, which says its comparison prices include destination. 241 hp; seven-speed automatic and front-wheel drive; Edmunds/AP reports 0–60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Performance with passenger and hatchback cargo utility.

Which car matches the kind of driving you want?

For an open-top, two-seat sports car: Mazda MX-5 Miata

The Miata is the clearest choice if you want a roadster rather than a back seat. Mazda lists 181 hp and a standard six-speed manual for the 2026 car, with a six-speed automatic available on Grand Touring. Car and Driver’s ranking highlights the car’s low weight and sharp handling. The trade-off is straightforward: two seats and a small trunk make it less useful for passengers or bulky cargo.

Trim prices in Mazda North American Operations’ 2026 release are $30,430 for Sport soft top, $33,930 for Club soft top, $35,730 for Grand Touring soft top manual, and $36,650 for Grand Touring soft top automatic. Mazda states the destination and handling charge became $1,315 effective August 11, 2026 ($1,360 in Alaska); check the current listing for the full amount payable.

For a rear-drive coupe: Toyota GR86 or Subaru BRZ

The GR86 and BRZ are the two-seat roadster’s coupe alternatives in this comparison: both offer rear-seat space, though CARFAX describes the BRZ’s rear seating as tight and its trunk as limited. Car and Driver praises the GR86’s sharp steering and tuned chassis; CARFAX notes lively performance but also rearward-visibility limits and highway road noise. The BRZ’s cited coverage emphasizes its manual and dialed-in chassis, with limited equipment noted in Car and Driver’s ranking.

The 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison describes both as 228-hp rear-wheel-drive coupes with manual or automatic transmissions. That information is specific to its 2025 comparison and should not be carried forward as a verified 2026 specification. The 2026 price figures also differ by publication: Car and Driver lists $32,695 for the GR86 and $37,055 for the BRZ; CARFAX lists $32,395 and $35,860, respectively. Those figures should not be blended into one supposedly definitive transaction price.

For more reported power: Ford Mustang EcoBoost

The 2025 Mustang EcoBoost is the pony-car option, not a lightweight-coupe substitute. Edmunds/AP lists 315 hp and 350 lb-ft and reports a 5.6-second 0–60 mph time for the 10-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive. Its cited $33,515 starting price is for model year 2025 and is part of that outlet’s comparison, which says prices include destination.

For a sport sedan: Honda Civic Si

The 2025 Civic Si pairs a six-speed manual with a four-door body and EPA ratings of 27 city / 37 highway / 31 combined mpg. American Honda Motor Co.’s 2024 release lists 200 hp and 192 lb-ft, with MSRP of $29,950 before its $1,095 destination charge. That makes the release’s destination-inclusive figure $31,045. It is a sport sedan with everyday rear-seat usefulness, not a two-seat sports car.

For a practical hatchback: Volkswagen Golf GTI

The 2025 Golf GTI adds hatchback cargo and passenger practicality to a 241-hp turbo engine. Edmunds/AP lists front-wheel drive, a seven-speed automatic, and a reported 5.9-second 0–60 mph time. Its $33,640 MSRP is from that outlet’s 2025 comparison, which states that the listed comparison prices include destination.

How to compare the prices without mixing model years

Published figures vary by model year, source, trim, and price presentation. For example, the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison gives the Miata a $30,715 starting price and reports 6.4 seconds to 60 mph in Edmunds’ test; the 2026 Mazda release lists a $30,430 starting MSRP for the Sport soft top. Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking lists the Miata at $31,665, while CARFAX lists $30,430. These are not interchangeable figures: they refer to different model years or source presentations.

Before comparing a quote with a listing, check the model year, trim, whether destination is included, and whether the price is an MSRP or a publisher’s reported starting figure. A starting price does not establish insurance, maintenance, depreciation, financing, taxes, or the final negotiated price. The available figures do not provide a consistent basis for ranking total ownership costs.

What the shortlist can—and cannot—tell you

  • The Miata is the open-top, two-seat choice; the GR86 and BRZ are the coupe alternatives.
  • The Mustang EcoBoost prioritizes substantially more reported power than the small roadsters and coupes in this group.
  • The Civic Si and Golf GTI trade a dedicated sports-car body for sedan or hatchback utility.
  • Price comparisons need a stated model year and destination treatment; the figures cited here are not one uniform price list.
