AWD can help a vehicle get moving on snow, but it does not replace winter tires, safe following distance, or ground clearance suited to your roads. The available verified information supports comparing the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek and Mazda CX-30, with the Toyota Corolla Cross as another option whose current starting price needs confirmation. It does not establish ten cars with comparable prices and winter-safety evidence, so a ranked list of ten would imply a level of verification that is not available.
What makes an AWD car useful in snow?
All-wheel drive and ground clearance address different problems. AWD can help distribute power to the wheels when accelerating on slippery surfaces; clearance helps the vehicle avoid contacting deeper snow or uneven surfaces beneath it. Neither attribute establishes how well a car stops on snow. NHTSA advises drivers: “Slow down. It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered surface.” (NHTSA winter driving tips.)
The winter risk is not theoretical: NHTSA recorded 320 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes in snow or sleet conditions in 2023. Those figures describe crashes in those weather conditions, not the risk for a particular vehicle or driver. (NHTSA winter driving tips.)
Verified 2026 candidates
The available model-specific facts make the Crosstrek and CX-30 the clearest current comparisons. The Corolla Cross is also worth considering because AWD is offered, but the available starting-price results conflict, so confirm the price for the exact trim and transaction before treating it as a budget match.

How to compare the candidates for your winter driving
Start with the roads you actually drive
For regularly plowed roads, AWD may be useful for getting underway, while winter tires and careful speed management remain important. If you routinely encounter unplowed roads or deep snow, compare clearance as well as AWD; on the verified figures above, Crosstrek standard trims have more stated clearance than the CX-30, while the Wilderness figure applies only to that trim. These figures alone do not establish which vehicle is safer or more capable in every winter condition.
Compare the real purchase price, not just the headline number
The Mazda price excludes destination and other charges. The available Subaru material does not provide a comparable price, and the Toyota starting-price figures conflict. Request an itemized quote for the exact AWD trim, including destination and dealer-added costs, before calling one the least expensive. No comparable ownership-cost or tire-cost figures are established here.

Check safety evidence at the exact model-year and trim level
Subaru reports a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA for the 2026 Crosstrek. That is a vehicle safety rating, not a winter braking comparison. Comparable NHTSA or IIHS results for the other candidates are not established in the cited material, so do not infer a safety ranking from AWD, clearance, or equipment claims.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need winter tires if your car has AWD?
AWD does not make all-season tires equivalent to winter tires. NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. For your specific vehicle, consult the owner’s manual or driver-door tire placard for the correct size, and fit winter tires on all wheel positions rather than mixing winter and non-winter tires. What to verify before choosing a car
- Confirm AWD is included on the exact trim and model year; availability on a model does not mean every version has it.
- Check ground clearance against the snow depth and road conditions you face, not just the AWD badge.
- Get a written, itemized price that identifies destination charges and the exact trim.
- Verify the correct tire size from the vehicle placard or owner’s manual, then price a complete winter set for all wheel positions.
- Look up current NHTSA and IIHS results for the precise model year and configuration rather than assuming ratings transfer across years or trims.
- On slick roads, slow down and leave more following distance; AWD does not eliminate the limits of traction when turning or braking.
