Acura RDX Production Ends After 2026: Why the Popular Crossover Is Going Away—and What Comes Next

Acura is ending production of the current third-generation RDX after 2026 because of supplier issues, but the RDX nameplate will return as a hybrid. Here is what buyers, owners and lessees need to know about the gap, remaining inventory and the unconfirmed replacement.

Acura is ending production of the current, third-generation RDX after the 2026 model year—but it is not abandoning the RDX nameplate. Acura says production of the gas-powered RDX will be suspended later in 2026 because several suppliers can no longer provide key parts. At the same time, the company confirmed that a fourth-generation RDX is in development with Acura’s first two-motor hybrid-electric system. The replacement is expected within the next couple of years, but there is no confirmed U.S. launch date or model year.

That creates an unusual situation for shoppers: the current RDX is going away before its successor is ready, leaving a possible gap in new-vehicle availability. Remaining 2026 vehicles can still be sold after factory production stops, while used and certified-pre-owned supply will continue. As of August 9, 2026, the most accurate description is the current RDX generation is ending, the RDX nameplate is continuing, and the timing of the hybrid replacement remains uncertain.

What Acura actually announced

In its January 14, 2026 announcement, Acura said production of the 2026 RDX would be suspended later in the year because several suppliers were no longer in a position to continue supplying key parts.

The same announcement made clear that this was not a permanent cancellation of the model. Acura said a fourth-generation RDX is being developed and will use a two-motor hybrid-electric system. Acura described the new system as its first of this type and said the vehicle should arrive within the next couple of years.

  • 【Important Usage Tips】 To help protect your vehicle’s paint, ensure the car surface is clean and free from large debris before installing the cover. Avoid placing the cover on a wet vehicle to reduce the risk of paint damage. When installing, locate the logo and the “FRONT” label positioned at the bottom center to correctly identify the front and rear sides.

Acura did not disclose the affected parts, provide an exact final production day, announce a 2027 RDX, or publish a firm replacement launch date. That distinction matters because headlines saying simply that Acura is discontinuing the RDX overstate what the company has confirmed.

The precise version: Acura is discontinuing the current gas-powered RDX after the 2026 model year. It has not announced the permanent death of the RDX nameplate.

Why is Acura ending RDX production?

1. Supplier continuity is the official immediate reason

Acura’s stated trigger is that several suppliers can no longer provide key parts for the current RDX. The company appears to have decided that keeping an aging generation in production would not justify finding replacement suppliers or re-engineering components while a redesigned hybrid vehicle is already in development.

However, Acura has not published a list of the parts involved. It is therefore not accurate to describe this as a confirmed semiconductor shortage, a broad industry-wide supply-chain crisis, or proof that routine repair parts for existing RDXs are about to disappear. The official explanation is narrower: suppliers cannot continue supporting key parts for new-vehicle production.

2. Honda changed its near-term electrification strategy

The supplier issue explains the immediate production decision, but it does not fully explain why Acura is allowing a gap between generations. The likely reason is that the replacement program’s timing changed while Honda reassessed its North American electric-vehicle strategy.

On March 12, 2026, Honda canceled development and launch of the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX EV. Honda cited the changing market environment, difficulty achieving profitability, tariffs and weaker-than-expected conditions for its planned EV expansion. The company said it would strengthen its hybrid lineup instead.

This is important context, but it should not be presented as Acura’s officially stated single cause for ending the RDX. The best-supported explanation is that the supplier problem was the immediate production trigger, while Honda’s EV-to-hybrid reset likely affected the timing and direction of the next RDX program.

3. Acura and Honda are reallocating plant capacity

The RDX is built at Honda’s East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, alongside the CR-V, CR-V Hybrid and Acura MDX. Honda’s May 14, 2026 business update said the company would reallocate excess Ohio capacity toward internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles after reassessing its EV plans. Honda also said all of its North American auto plants would become capable of producing hybrid models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The facility is part of Honda’s Ohio EV hub and has been undergoing changes related to that strategy. After the cancellation of several planned EVs, the company’s near-term production priorities shifted toward hybrids. That helps explain why Acura is not simply extending the current turbocharged RDX until a conventional replacement is ready.

Honda had already signaled a stronger hybrid-development focus in its 2025 business strategy update. The RDX’s next generation is arriving during that broader transition.

Was the Acura RDX actually popular?

Yes—historically and within Acura’s lineup. But that does not mean the RDX was Acura’s current best-selling vehicle in every year or market.

Acura says the RDX has generated approximately 850,000 cumulative North American sales across three generations. In the United States, sales peaked at 63,580 units in 2018, around the launch of the current generation. Acura sold 42,988 RDXs in 2024, compared with 50,112 MDXs. That makes the RDX an important volume model, although the larger MDX sold more that year.

The RDX was still selling at a meaningful rate when the production announcement arrived. Acura reported 2,487 RDX sales in March 2026, versus 4,272 MDX sales that month. Acura’s sales figures do not support the simplistic claim that the RDX was canceled because nobody wanted it.

The more defensible conclusion is that the current RDX reached a product-cycle and parts-supply dead end. It remained a significant seller, but Acura chose not to make the investment required to keep an aging generation alive while preparing a hybrid successor.

The Acura RSX is no longer the bridge vehicle

Early 2026 coverage often described the all-electric Acura RSX as a potential product that could help Acura fill the space between the outgoing RDX and its next hybrid SUV. That information is now outdated.

Honda canceled the RSX EV on March 12, before the vehicle launched. The company’s official strategy document also identifies the RSX among the canceled programs. As a result:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The RSX was never launched as a production Acura.
  • It is not the replacement for the RDX.
  • It cannot serve as Acura’s bridge product during the RDX gap.
  • Acura’s near-term SUV strategy now relies more heavily on the ADX, MDX and remaining RDX inventory while the future hybrid SUV is developed.

Acura’s June 2026 sales update emphasized the ADX, Integra and MDX as contributors to the brand’s performance and no longer treated the RSX as an upcoming sales contributor. Any article that still presents the RSX as an imminent RDX alternative is not current.

What is known about the next RDX?

Confirmed by Acura

  • It will be the fourth-generation RDX.
  • It will use a two-motor hybrid-electric system.
  • It will be Acura’s first vehicle to use that two-motor hybrid system.
  • Acura expects it to arrive within the next couple of years.

Honda offered a possible visual clue on May 14, when it showed an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype. The timing and description make it reasonable to infer that the prototype previews the next RDX: Acura had already announced a fourth-generation hybrid RDX, and Honda soon showed a compact-to-midsize Acura hybrid SUV.

That connection remains an inference, however. Honda did not formally identify the prototype as the RDX, and Acura has not published its production name.

Still unknown

Acura has not announced:

  • the replacement’s official model year;
  • a firm U.S. launch or on-sale date;
  • horsepower, torque or battery capacity;
  • fuel-economy ratings;
  • towing capacity;
  • whether the system will use front-wheel drive, electric all-wheel drive, or another arrangement;
  • whether SH-AWD branding will continue;
  • pricing, trims or equipment;
  • whether a non-hybrid gasoline version will also be offered.

Reports and forecasts mentioning a 2028 RDX, April 2028 production or detailed powertrain specifications should be treated as estimates rather than Acura-confirmed facts. Industry reporting has suggested those possibilities, but Acura has not committed publicly to them.

The production timeline: what is certain and what is not

Date What happened
January 14, 2026 Acura announced that 2026 RDX production would be suspended later in the year and confirmed a fourth-generation hybrid successor.
March 12, 2026 Honda canceled the planned Acura RSX EV and two Honda 0-series EVs.
May 14, 2026 Honda showed an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype and reaffirmed a broader hybrid rollout beginning from 2027.
August 9, 2026 Acura still had not publicly supplied a definitive replacement launch date, final production-day announcement, confirmed model year or production specifications.

Several unofficial reports place the final third-generation build on or around May 5, 2026. That date has appeared in community and secondary reporting, but it has not been independently confirmed through an official Honda, Acura or plant announcement. The safest wording is that Acura announced a later-2026 production suspension, while unofficial reports place the final build in early May.

What happens to remaining 2026 RDX inventory?

Factory production and dealer sales are not the same thing. Acura expected enough 2026 inventory for sales to continue through much of 2026, and a vehicle can remain on a dealer lot—or be listed as an incoming allocation—after its assembly line stops.

Availability will vary by region, trim, exterior and interior color, incentives and dealer allocation. The official 2026 RDX pricing and specifications page still provides model information, but an online model page does not prove that a particular dealer has a vehicle in stock.

There is no publicly confirmed 2027 RDX. After remaining new inventory is sold, buyers will need to look to used and certified-pre-owned vehicles until the next-generation model arrives.

Should you buy a remaining 2026 RDX?

There is no automatic reason to avoid one. The 2026 RDX is the final year of the current generation, but it is an established Acura product with a known gasoline powertrain and existing dealer-service network. The decision depends mainly on whether you value a known vehicle now or want to wait for an unreleased hybrid redesign.

Your priority More logical choice Why
Need a well-understood gasoline crossover immediately Remaining 2026 RDX You get the current model’s known engine, transmission, equipment and driving characteristics.
Want the newest technology and likely improved efficiency Wait for the hybrid RDX The successor should bring a new design and hybrid system, although timing and specifications are unknown.
Want a smaller Acura crossover now ADX It is positioned below the RDX, but it is not a one-for-one replacement for RDX space or performance.
Need three rows or substantially more capacity MDX The MDX is larger and more expensive, but better suited to additional passengers and cargo.
Want luxury hybrid choices immediately Compare competing compact luxury hybrids Vehicles such as the Lexus NX, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Genesis GV70 differ substantially in efficiency, performance, equipment, warranty coverage and lease pricing.

Reasons to buy the 2026 RDX

  • It is the last opportunity to purchase a new RDX before the model gap.
  • The current turbocharged powertrain is understood, unlike the unreleased hybrid system.
  • End-of-generation inventory may create negotiating leverage, depending on the local market.
  • Some drivers may prefer a gasoline engine and conventional automatic transmission over an unproven-to-them hybrid setup.

Reasons to wait

  • The next RDX should bring new styling, technology and a hybrid powertrain.
  • Hybrid efficiency may improve, although Acura has not announced an RDX-specific fuel-economy rating.
  • Buyers who dislike purchasing at the end of a generation may prefer the redesigned vehicle.
  • The replacement could arrive earlier or later than current industry estimates.

What the 2026 RDX includes

According to Acura’s current specifications, the 2026 RDX uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Acura lists SH-AWD on the 2026 RDX trims shown on its specifications page, and the vehicle remains a five-seat crossover.

Acura lists a starting MSRP of $45,100, before applicable destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees and optional equipment. Check the window sticker and the local dealer’s out-the-door quote rather than assuming the advertised price is the final price.

Checklist before buying a leftover RDX

  1. Verify the model year. Confirm that the vehicle is a 2026, not a leftover 2025 being described loosely as a current RDX.
  2. Check the VIN and build date. Ask for the VIN, window sticker and vehicle history before signing.
  3. Confirm the vehicle’s status. Determine whether it is physically on the lot, dealer stock or an incoming allocation.
  4. Shop the local market. Compare several 2026 RDX listings and obtain an out-the-door price from more than one dealer.
  5. Do not pay a production-ending premium. Scarcity can increase desirability, but it does not automatically increase the vehicle’s value.
  6. Review warranty and maintenance documents. Make sure the paperwork reflects the actual vehicle, delivery date and any dealer-provided coverage.
  7. Think carefully about leasing. A lease may end before the hybrid replacement is widely available, or it may leave you waiting for a vehicle with an uncertain launch date.
  8. If you are waiting, get cancellation terms in writing. If a dealer accepts a deposit for a future hybrid, confirm whether it is refundable or cancellable if timing or specifications change.

What current RDX owners and lessees need to know

The end of production does not mean existing RDX owners suddenly lose warranty coverage, recall support or ordinary dealer service. Acura has not announced that routine service or warranty support will end for current vehicles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also important not to turn Acura’s supplier statement into a prediction of an immediate parts crisis. A problem supplying parts for new-vehicle production does not establish that maintenance parts, repair components or warranty parts for vehicles already on the road are unavailable. Owners should continue using Acura dealers or qualified repair shops and verify unusual parts delays case by case.

Long-term ownership can involve different considerations for routine maintenance parts, model-specific electronic components, body panels, warranty work and recalls. Production ending may eventually make some specialized components less convenient or more expensive, but Acura has not published a timetable saying that such a problem is imminent.

MotorTrend reported that Acura was allowing some current owners to extend leases. Eligibility, pricing and timing can vary, so lessees should confirm the terms directly with Acura Financial Services or their dealer rather than assuming every lease qualifies.

RDX alternatives during the gap

Acura ADX: smaller and more accessible

The ADX is Acura’s smaller premium compact SUV and sits below the RDX in the lineup. It is a sensible choice for someone who wants a new Acura crossover immediately and can accept less size and a different level of space, power and driving character.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a direct RDX substitute. Buyers should sit in both vehicles and compare rear-seat room, cargo capacity, ride height and equipment instead of treating the ADX as a replacement simply because both are Acura crossovers.

Acura MDX: larger and more versatile

The MDX is Acura’s larger three-row flagship SUV. It offers more passenger and cargo capacity, but it is physically bigger and generally more expensive. It makes sense for a buyer who needs additional seating or utility, not necessarily for someone specifically seeking the RDX’s compact, two-row footprint.

Honda CR-V Hybrid: practical efficiency

The CR-V Hybrid is a logical size-and-efficiency alternative for shoppers who value space and hybrid fuel economy. It is not a luxury-equipment, performance or brand-equivalent substitute for the RDX. The two vehicles are built at the same East Liberty plant, but shared production does not make them identical vehicles or direct mechanical alternatives.

Other compact luxury crossovers

Shoppers unwilling to wait can also compare the Lexus NX, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Genesis GV70. These vehicles should not be treated as interchangeable: some emphasize hybrid efficiency, others performance, cabin materials, technology or lease affordability. Verify current pricing, powertrain availability, warranty terms, cargo measurements and EPA fuel-economy ratings at the time of purchase.

What this means for Acura

Acura is taking a risk by leaving the compact luxury crossover segment without a ready replacement. The RDX has been one of the brand’s core products for nearly two decades, and its historical sales volume makes the gap commercially significant.

At the same time, continuing the current model indefinitely would have its own costs. The vehicle was approaching the end of its generation, suppliers could no longer support key parts, and Honda was redirecting development and manufacturing resources toward a new hybrid strategy. Acura appears to be accepting a temporary lineup hole rather than spending heavily to preserve the outgoing gasoline model.

The business contradiction is the central point of this story: the RDX can be a popular, meaningful seller and still be discontinued in its current form. Sales popularity alone does not guarantee that an old vehicle program remains economical to build when parts, product planning and corporate strategy have all changed.

Bottom line: Acura is ending a generation, not killing the RDX

Acura is not ending the RDX because buyers rejected it, and the evidence does not show a permanent cancellation of the nameplate. The current third-generation, gas-powered RDX is being phased out after 2026 because supplier support is ending while Acura prepares a fourth-generation hybrid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RSX EV will not fill the gap because Honda canceled it before launch. The Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype shown in May 2026 may preview the next RDX, but its name, specifications and launch date remain unconfirmed.

For buyers, the choice is straightforward but not risk-free: purchase a remaining 2026 RDX if you want a known gasoline crossover now and can negotiate a fair price, or wait if the hybrid redesign and improved efficiency matter more than having a vehicle immediately. For current owners, production ending is not a reason to panic about warranty or routine service. It is a reason to keep normal maintenance records and verify any unusual parts or lease questions directly with Acura.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Acura permanently discontinuing the RDX?

No. Acura is ending the current third-generation RDX after the 2026 model year, but it has confirmed that a fourth-generation RDX with a two-motor hybrid-electric system is in development. The replacement timing and final specifications have not been announced.

Will there be a 2027 Acura RDX?

There is no publicly confirmed 2027 RDX. Remaining 2026 vehicles may continue to be sold after factory production stops, but Acura has not announced a 2027 model year or a definitive replacement launch date.

What happened to the Acura RSX?

Honda canceled the planned Acura RSX EV on March 12, 2026, before it launched. It is not an RDX replacement and will not serve as Acura’s bridge product during the gap.

Is it safe to buy a 2026 Acura RDX?

There is no automatic reason to avoid it. The 2026 RDX is an established vehicle with a known gasoline powertrain and dealer-service network. Buyers should verify the model year and VIN, compare out-the-door prices, review warranty paperwork and avoid paying a premium solely because production is ending.

When will the hybrid RDX arrive?

Acura has said the fourth-generation hybrid RDX is expected within the next couple of years, but it has not announced a firm U.S. launch date or model year. Reports suggesting a specific 2028 launch should be treated as estimates, not confirmed Acura information.

The Bottom Line

Acura is discontinuing the current RDX, not the RDX nameplate. Supplier problems are ending production of the gas-powered third generation after 2026, while Honda’s broader shift from near-term EVs toward hybrids has shaped the replacement timeline. A hybrid RDX is coming, but shoppers may face a gap before it arrives.
