The 1992 Mazda MX-3 GS made its case with an engine rarely found in a compact front-drive coupe: a 1.8-liter V6. Mazda’s North American history calls it the first in its class offered with a 1.8-liter V6, then the smallest V6 in mass production. The novelty was not effortless low-speed muscle; the K8 made its power high in the rev range, giving the GS a distinctive character that period reviewers praised for agility but faulted for weak response at low rpm and cabin noise.
What made the 1992 MX-3 GS different?
Mazda introduced the MX-3 as a 1992-model sports coupe. Its GS trim paired a compact hatchback-coupe body with the K8, a 1.8-liter, 24-valve, double-overhead-cam V6. Mazda’s corporate history describes the engine as a first for its class and the smallest V6 in mass production; that is Mazda’s historical framing, rather than an independently audited global ranking. The layout itself was conventional for a small sporty coupe of the period: the U.S.-market GS was front-wheel drive. What was unconventional was the cylinder count. Period competitors named by Consumer Guide—including the Toyota Paseo, Nissan NX2000 and Geo Storm—did not offer a V6 in this class. The MX-3 therefore stood apart more by engineering character than by sheer output.
1992 Mazda MX-3 GS specs: the K8 V6
Mazda’s 1993 full-line brochure lists the GS’s 1.8-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 at 130 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 115 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Those figures match a January 1992 road test’s reported ratings. The peaks explain the engine’s basic temperament: it was tuned to make its case with revs, not a big shove at low engine speed.

How the variable intake worked
The K8 was an aluminum-block-and-head, 60-degree V6. MotorTrend’s retrospective explains that Mazda’s Variable Resonance Induction System (VRIS) used dual resonance tubes and butterfly valves to vary intake length with engine speed. The goal was to tune airflow across the rev range rather than rely on a single fixed intake path. The same account says the manual car’s engine could rev to its 7,000-rpm redline. What did the MX-3 GS feel like on the road?
Period impressions describe a coupe that turned and changed direction eagerly, with agile handling and quick steering response. Those are contemporary reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee of how any surviving example behaves today; tire condition, suspension wear and repairs can transform an old car’s road manners.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe trade-off was the engine’s low-rpm response. Consumer Guide’s retrospective reports that reviewers found little power below 3,000 rpm, along with considerable road and wind noise at highway speeds. That observation fits the K8’s power and torque peaks, but it should be understood as a period criticism rather than a universal verdict on every car or a substitute for inspecting one in person. Manual or automatic?
A five-speed manual was offered in the U.S.; a four-speed automatic was also available. Mazda’s 1993 brochure documents those choices for the following model year, while the January 1992 road test covers a 1992 GS. The manual is the version associated in MotorTrend’s retrospective with the 7,000-rpm redline. A buyer should confirm the transmission in the specific car rather than assume equipment from a listing or another model year.
How quick was it, and what was its fuel economy?
In a January 1992 road test, The Journal recorded a 0–60 mph time of 8.8 seconds for its GS test car. The publication also printed EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. These are one period test result and the estimate printed at the time—not a promise for every car, and not a forecast of what a decades-old example will achieve today. How the MX-3 fits into its era
The GS’s unusual engine did not make it the only interesting front-drive coupe of the early 1990s. Consumer Guide names the Toyota Paseo, Nissan NX2000 and Geo Storm as alternatives, and recounts that the MX-3 GS won a 1991 Car and Driver comparison against the Storm GSi and NX2000. That contest is useful period context: it records how the cars were judged then, not a present-day ranking or proof that the Mazda is superior by every measure.
The MX-3’s formula was a small coupe, front-wheel drive, and a high-revving V6 rather than a larger, torque-rich engine. The handling praise and the complaints about low-rpm power and highway noise belong together: the car’s appeal rested on its character and response when driven in the rev range, while its compromises were apparent in ordinary cruising.

How long was the V6 MX-3 sold?
Mazda’s North American history identifies the MX-3’s 1992 introduction. A later historical account says the North American model continued through 1996, while the V6 was offered through 1994. The coupe’s nameplate therefore lasted beyond the V6-powered version in that market. MotorTrend’s MX-3 retrospective
What should a buyer check on a 1992 MX-3 GS?
Check the ignition-switch recall by VIN
Certain 1992–93 MX-3s were included in recall campaign 15V674000, Mazda number 8715J. Edmunds’ recall listing says grease at the ignition-switch contacts could become conductive and overheat, increasing fire risk; the remedy was replacement of the ignition switch. The recall began December 17, 2015. Model year alone does not establish whether a particular car was affected or repaired: check its VIN through an authoritative recall channel and ask for documentation of completed work. Edmunds’ 1992 MX-3 recall listing
Confirm the car’s equipment and condition
Because the published equipment list cited here is for 1993, verify the actual car’s transmission, ABS, and other equipment rather than treating a neighboring model year’s brochure as a build sheet. For an older car, condition and maintenance history matter at least as much as the original specification. Listen for abnormal engine or drivetrain noises, test steering and braking behavior safely, and have a qualified mechanic assess the car before purchase.
Match service information to the exact car
A surfaced 1992–1998 MX-3 service-manual file may be a useful reference, but its stated year span does not by itself prove coverage for every market, engine or transmission. Check those details before buying or relying on a manual. MX-3 workshop-manual reference
