The 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSi was Chrysler’s version of Mitsubishi’s Starion: a two-door hatchback sports coupe with a fuel-injected, intercooled turbo engine rated at 188 horsepower. Its widebody performance identity linked it to the Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R, while an optional Sport Handling package added upgraded chassis equipment. Those specifications describe the model, not the condition or equipment of any surviving car.
What was the 1988 Chrysler Conquest?
Chrysler’s 1988 materials describe the Conquest TSi as a “SPORTS SPECIALTY COUPE imported for Chrysler from Mitsubishi.” The factory service manual classifies the body as a two-door hatchback. Both descriptions fit: it was a performance-oriented coupe with a rear hatch, sold in North America under the Chrysler badge.
The Conquest belonged to the Mitsubishi Starion family. MotorTrend’s history says the Starion arrived at Mitsubishi dealerships first, with Dodge and Plymouth Conquest versions following in 1984; Chrysler took over the Conquest badge in 1987. The Chrysler-badged model continued through 1989, according to MotorTrend’s account. MotorTrend’s Starion and Conquest history provides that broader badge chronology.
1988 Conquest TSi specifications
Chrysler’s period public-relations material directly supports the TSi’s principal performance figures and standard transmission. The factory manual gives a more exact engine displacement than the rounded figure used in the promotional sheet.

| Specification | 1988 Conquest TSi | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Two-door hatchback | Mitsubishi Motors Corporation factory service manual |
| Engine displacement | 2.555 liters (155.9 cubic inches) | Exact figure in the 1987 factory service manual |
| Engine description | 2.6-liter, fuel-injected, intercooled turbo | Rounded displacement and description in Chrysler’s 1988 public-relations material |
| Power | 188 horsepower | Chrysler’s 1988 public-relations material |
| Transmission | Five-speed manual overdrive | Listed as standard equipment by Chrysler |
The two displacement figures are not competing specifications: the service manual states 2.555 liters, while Chrysler rounded the engine to 2.6 liters in its public-facing material. MotorTrend adds secondary historical context, reporting 188 horsepower and 234 lb-ft for 1988 North American Starquests; Chrysler’s retrieved sheet confirms horsepower but does not state torque. MotorTrend’s history is the source for that torque figure.
How it compares with the Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R
The Chrysler Conquest and Mitsubishi Starion were badge and market variations within the same model family, rather than unrelated cars. MotorTrend describes the Conquest TSi as related to the Starion ESI-R, the widebody performance version. The useful comparison is therefore primarily about branding and equipment, not a claim that every example is identically equipped.

| Comparison point | 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSi | Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R context |
|---|---|---|
| Market identity | Chrysler-badged North American import from Mitsubishi | Mitsubishi-badged counterpart in the Starion family |
| Body and trim context | TSi widebody performance identity | MotorTrend identifies the ESI-R as the related widebody performance version |
| Power figure | 188 hp, per Chrysler’s 1988 public-relations material | MotorTrend reports 188 hp and 234 lb-ft for 1988 North American Starquests |
| Chassis option | Optional Sport Handling package described for 1988 | The cited history connects the models but does not establish identical package availability for every Starion market or trim |
MotorTrend says the widebody appearance reached selected models in 1986 and situates the TSi within the family’s motorsport-inspired styling. That is historical context, not proof that an individual car retains its original panels, components or specification.
What the Sport Handling package added
According to MotorTrend, a Sport Handling package was offered for the 1988 model year. It added wider wheels and eight-way adjustable front and rear shock absorbers. The package was optional: a TSi badge alone does not establish that the equipment is fitted to a particular car.

For a car-specific check, compare its documentation and installed parts with reliable model-year references. The factory manual says the engine-compartment information plate records the model, engine, transmission, final gear ratio and paint code. Its VIN discussion locates the identification number on a plate visible through the windshield, attached to the left top side of the instrument panel. These identifiers help establish the car’s recorded configuration; they do not by themselves prove that parts have not been changed since manufacture.
Where to find a 1988 Conquest service manual
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s 1988 Chrysler Conquest factory service manual is the most direct technical reference for this model. Printed in Japan in 1987, it says its information reflects what was available at publication. The manual describes coverage including diagnosis, disassembly, repair, installation procedures, specifications and tightening references, making it more useful for service work than a general model history.

A specialist archive lists a 1988 Starion/Conquest manual and an OEM parts catalog. StarQuestParts.net’s manual archive is a place to check for those references; the listing does not guarantee current availability or that a particular copy is complete. Confirm that any manual you obtain covers the 1988 Chrysler Conquest and the relevant system or procedure before relying on it.
The factory foreword states: “This Service Manual has been prepared with the latest service information available at the time of publication.” That makes it a period-correct reference, not a guarantee that it includes later service updates or prior repairs to a particular car.

What historical specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Factory specifications establish how Chrysler described the 1988 TSi when new. They do not establish a surviving car’s present condition, originality, reliability, value or parts availability. For an individual car, use the identification details, maintenance records and a direct inspection, and verify that any replacement or service part fits the specific year and configuration. StarQuestParts.net also identifies a Conquest and Starion parts category, but its listing alone does not establish current stock or seller quality. StarQuestParts.net’s parts site is a specialist resource to investigate, not a guarantee of availability.
