The fifth-generation Toyota GR Supra shares a platform with the BMW Z4, but Toyota’s account describes a joint sports-car project—not simply a Z4 with a Toyota badge. And while Toyota reported 2,953 Supra sales in the United States in 2025, sales counts alone cannot show whether the A90 made or lost money. The clearer lesson is that Toyota revived a flagship sports car, developed it over time, and extended its identity into customer racing.
Is the fifth-generation Supra just a BMW Z4?
No—but the BMW connection is real. Toyota says the two companies’ joint sports-car platform effort was underway following plans made in 2012, and its model history identifies the Z4 platform as the foundation for the fifth-generation Supra. Calling the A90 a “BMW Z4 in disguise” captures the shared underpinnings, but overstates what that relationship means.
Toyota’s design and development account describes Toyota-set performance and handling targets, Toyota design work, and development under the Gazoo Racing identity. That supports describing the Supra as a Toyota-developed product built on a shared foundation. It does not establish that every component or engineering decision was unique to Toyota. Toyota’s 2019 design and development account and its 2024 Supra model history and specifications provide the company’s explanation of the collaboration.
How many Supras did Toyota sell?
Toyota Motor North America reported 2,615 Supra sales in the United States in calendar year 2024 and 2,953 in 2025, a 12.9% year-over-year increase. These are annual U.S. sales, not global totals or cumulative A90 sales. Toyota’s January 2026 U.S. sales release reports both years’ figures.

| Calendar year | U.S. Supra sales | Change |

| 2024 | 2,615 | Baseline |
| 2025 | 2,953 | Up 12.9% from 2024 |
The figures put the Supra in the low thousands annually in the U.S. during those two years. They do not establish how many were sold worldwide, how the Supra compared with the Z4 in matched markets, or the A90’s lifetime sales.
Did the A90 Supra lose money?
The available sales figures cannot answer that. Establishing whether the program was profitable would require model-specific information such as development and production costs, revenue, and margins. Toyota’s cited sales release gives U.S. unit counts, not an A90 profit-and-loss result. There is therefore no basis here to call the Supra either a financial success or a sales loss.

Nor does the historical launch price settle the question. Toyota announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $49,990 for the 2020 GR Supra in January 2019; that is launch-era pricing, not a current price or evidence of program profitability. Toyota’s 2019 MSRP announcement gives the dated figure.
What does the Supra program show beyond sales?
The A90’s record is not limited to its annual showroom tally. Toyota continued to develop the model, announced an end-of-run A90 Final Edition, and brought the GR Supra into customer GT4 racing. Those are meaningful signs of product and motorsport activity, though none proves that the road-car program earned a profit.

It evolved through its model run
Toyota’s model history documents changes over the Supra’s life, making the A90 more than a one-time launch. That continuing development is part of the case for viewing the project as an ongoing sports-car program rather than judging it solely by one year’s U.S. sales. Toyota’s 2024 model history outlines the car’s changes.
Toyota announced a planned A90 finale
In November 2024, Toyota announced the A90 Final Edition and said production of the current Supra was scheduled to end with it. The company described a planned global run of 300 units, while noting that sales plans varied by region. The figure is a stated production plan, not a claim about how many were ultimately delivered. Toyota’s Final Edition announcement sets out the plan.

The name also reached customer racing
Toyota announced the GR Supra GT4 as a customer race car, with rollout planned across Europe, North America, and Japan/Asia. That broadened the Supra program into motorsport and gave customers a route to race a Supra-based car. It is evidence of the project’s wider enthusiast footprint—not a substitute for financial data on the road car. Toyota’s 2019 GT4 announcement describes the customer-racing rollout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the BMW partnership worth it?
That depends on what “worth it” means. If the test is whether Toyota sold enough cars to prove the A90 was profitable, the public figures cited here are insufficient. If the measure includes bringing back a Toyota-badged flagship, developing it as a GR product, and creating a platform for a customer GT4 program, the partnership enabled a broader sports-car effort than the U.S. sales totals alone reveal.

The most accurate verdict is neither “failed rebadge” nor proven financial triumph. The A90 was a Toyota–BMW collaboration with a shared platform, a Toyota-defined product identity, and a documented extension into racing. Its business result remains unproven by the available sales data.
