A 1990 Ferrari F40 was scheduled for a public sale in a California bankruptcy courtroom on August 12, 2025, with a proposed $2,555,000 purchase by RM Auctions Inc., doing business as RM Sotheby’s, subject to overbidding. The available records do not establish whether the car ultimately sold or for how much. This was a sale of bankruptcy-estate property—not a federal seizure or forfeiture.
Why was a Ferrari F40 going to court?
The car was listed as property of Santa Paula Hay & Grain and Ranches, a debtor in Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, Northern Division. The case number is 9:25-bk-10314-RC. The courtroom sale was part of the bankruptcy process for selling estate property; the records do not describe the Ferrari as seized by law enforcement or owned by the federal government. Court sale notice and hearing report.
What Ferrari was listed for sale?
The court notice identifies the vehicle as a 1990 Ferrari F40, VIN ZFFMN34A9L0086230, assembly number 03112. A broker listing describes it as U.S.-specification, Rosso Corsa, and showing 7,430 miles. The same listing says it was one of 213 units made to U.S. specifications and claims clean Carfax and AutoCheck records with no damage history; those are listing statements, not independently verified findings in the court materials. What price and sale terms were proposed?
The court notice scheduled the public sale for August 12, 2025, at 1 p.m. in Courtroom 201, 1415 State Street, Santa Barbara. It listed $2,555,000 as the proposed sale price. A court hearing report identifies RM Auctions Inc. d.b.a. RM Sotheby’s as the proposed stalking-horse bidder at that amount, with no financing contingency and subject to public overbid. A stalking-horse bid sets a proposed starting point for competing offers; it is not proof that the bidder ultimately bought the car. Court sale notice.

The notice says the property would be sold “as is where is without representation or warranty of any kind or nature whether express or implied.” Prospective bidders therefore should not treat the court notice as a guarantee of condition or history.
The separate $5 million figure
A July 2025 hearing report describes a requested $5,000,000 buy-it-now option, and the broker listing also advertised that amount. It was a proposed option, not an established sale price or confirmation that a buyer exercised it. The July report also notes that papers differed on whether a proposed hearing date was August 12 or August 19. July hearing report; broker listing.

Was the F40 sold, and how much did it bring?
The records cited here do not establish the final disposition of VIN ZFFMN34A9L0086230. The scheduled sale date has passed, but the court notice, hearing reports, and listing do not verify a completed sale, winning bidder, or final price. Accordingly, $2,555,000 is the documented proposed stalking-horse amount—not a confirmed result—and $5,000,000 is a proposed buy-it-now figure, not a verified transaction.

Classic.com reports that a different 1990 Ferrari F40, VIN ZFFMN34A4L0087219, sold for $3,800,000 at Broad Arrow’s Amelia auction on March 6, 2026. That is a useful reference point for a completed sale, but it is not the bankruptcy car and does not establish its value. Differences in provenance, condition, specification, originality, mileage, and sale terms matter; a proposed stalking-horse bid also is not directly equivalent to a completed auction result.
