9 Electric Cars to Avoid in 2026 (or Buy Only With Extra Proof)

These nine EVs deserve extra caution in 2026 because of reliability scores, recalls, weak support networks, ICCU concerns, limited range, or discontinued U.S. availability.

For a typical U.S. buyer who wants dependable transportation, the nine EVs below deserve an avoid or proceed-with-extreme-caution label as of August 11, 2026. The reasons differ: Fisker’s collapse creates exceptional parts and software uncertainty; several Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and GM-platform EVs have poor recent reliability signals; the VinFast VF 8 has safety and support-network concerns; and the Mazda MX-30’s roughly 100-mile range makes it difficult to justify in today’s used market.

This is not a claim that every example will fail or that a repaired recall vehicle is automatically unsafe. “Worst” here means an unusually unfavorable ownership proposition after considering independent reliability evidence, recalls, service and parts access, charging practicality, range, price, and warranty exposure. Some of these cars can make sense for a highly informed buyer at the right price. Most shoppers should demand unusually strong evidence before buying one.

Important scope: This is a practical U.S. buyer-avoid list, not a universal mechanical ranking. It intentionally includes both vehicles that may still be available new and discontinued models that remain relevant to used-EV shoppers.

At a glance: the nine EVs that require the most caution

Vehicle Main reason for caution Best-case buyer
Fisker Ocean Manufacturer collapse and long-term support risk A technically capable buyer accepting substantial uncertainty
VinFast VF 8 Recall exposure, immature product history, and limited support footprint A heavily incentivized vehicle with confirmed local service
Chevrolet Blazer EV Very poor recent reliability signal and early-production recall exposure A late-build example with closed campaigns and strong warranty coverage
Honda Prologue GM Ultium-platform reliability concerns despite the Honda badge A discounted example with verified updates and an experienced dealer
Kia EV6 ICCU-related charging and propulsion risk An inspected example with all applicable campaigns completed
Kia EV9 Below-average reliability in a costly, primary-family vehicle A late-model lease or warranty-backed vehicle
Genesis GV60 Low reliability score and expensive downside at a premium price A deeply discounted certified used vehicle with substantial warranty remaining
Rivian R1T Very low reliability score and potentially consequential service downtime A later-build truck near an accessible service center
Mazda MX-30 EV Approximately 100-mile EPA range and discontinued U.S. availability A cheap local runabout with home charging and another vehicle available

How this list was assembled

Four factors drive the recommendations:

  1. Independent reliability evidence. Consumer Reports’ current reliability work uses owner survey data across 20 problem areas, including EV batteries, charging systems, electric motors, electronics, and drive systems. Its 2026 least-reliable list includes the Blazer EV, Rivian R1T, Honda Prologue, Kia EV6, Kia EV9, and Genesis GV60.
  2. Safety recalls and manufacturer campaigns. A recall is evidence that a specific defect or compliance issue requires attention; it is not proof that a vehicle remains unsafe after the repair is completed.
  3. Support, parts, warranty, and service risk. A vehicle with no local technician, uncertain software support, or difficult parts access can be a poor bargain even when it drives well.
  4. Practical value. Range, charging convenience, price, vehicle size, and intended use determine whether a known limitation is tolerable.

Consumer Reports reliability scores are signals, not failure guarantees. They measure reported problems and should be considered alongside the vehicle’s model year, build date, software history, recall status, warranty, and service location.

1. Fisker Ocean: the highest-support-risk purchase

The Fisker Ocean is the clearest avoid for an ordinary used-EV shopper. The central concern is not necessarily how an individual Ocean drives today; it is whether the vehicle can continue receiving dependable software, parts, diagnostics, warranty administration, and technical support.

Fisker’s financial collapse created an ownership environment unlike that of an EV from an established automaker. Public bankruptcy filings document the termination of the Ocean manufacturing agreement, while the vehicle accumulated safety and compliance campaigns. One campaign involved 2023-model-year cluster telltales whose warning-light behavior did not comply with requirements. A buyer must therefore investigate not just the car’s condition but the practical ability to repair it if something goes wrong.

An Ocean can be tempting because a distressed used example may look inexpensive relative to its original positioning. That discount may simply be compensation for support uncertainty. A software fault, failed component, or warranty dispute can be much harder to resolve when the manufacturer’s future is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A technically capable buyer purchasing at a very large discount, with confirmed parts access, transferable service coverage, complete recall documentation, and an independent inspection. It should not be the only vehicle for a household that depends on predictable transportation.

2. VinFast VF 8: paper specifications do not eliminate support risk

The VF 8 has competitive specifications on paper. In the cited U.S. configuration, the Eco trim carries an EPA-rated 264-mile range and the Plus trim 243 miles. Those figures alone do not make it a safe purchase recommendation.

NHTSA recall 25V559 covered 6,314 2023–2025 VF 8 vehicles because the advanced driver-assistance system could provide steering inputs in certain sweeping turns that were difficult for the driver to override. A separate campaign addressed a center-airbag issue in certain 2023–2025 vehicles. Neither campaign proves that every VF 8 is defective, and a completed recall repair matters. Together with the brand’s limited U.S. service footprint and shorter long-term track record, however, they justify more caution than the paper range suggests.

For a VF 8, location is part of the vehicle’s value. A low purchase price is less attractive if the nearest qualified service center is far away, appointment availability is poor, or the dealer cannot clearly explain how software updates and recall work are handled for the exact VIN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A new or certified vehicle with unusually strong manufacturer incentives, written confirmation that all campaigns are complete, and a local service center that can support the exact vehicle. Get the support arrangement in writing rather than relying on a salesperson’s general assurance.

3. Chevrolet Blazer EV: a poor reliability signal, especially for early examples

The Blazer EV is not on this list because its advertised range is inherently inadequate. Its problem is the combination of a very weak reliability signal and early-production recall exposure.

Consumer Reports gives the 2025 Blazer EV a “less reliable than other cars” verdict and reports three NHTSA recalls for that model year. In Consumer Reports’ 2026 least-reliable ranking, the Blazer EV received a reliability score of 19, placing it near the bottom of the qualifying vehicles surveyed.

NHTSA recall 25V433 covered certain 2024–2025 Blazer EVs whose rear parking-brake wiring harness could become damaged or corroded. The issue could cause unintended parking-brake activation while driving or loss of the parking brake while parked. That is a specific, repairable campaign—not a reason to assume every Blazer EV is permanently unsafe—but it is an important reason to verify the VIN and repair history carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A late-build example with every campaign closed, a strong remaining warranty position, a documented software-update history, and a purchase price low enough to compensate for reliability uncertainty. A thorough test drive should include the infotainment system, charging, driver-assistance features, parking brake, and all warning displays.

4. Honda Prologue: a Honda badge does not guarantee Honda-like reliability

The Honda Prologue is a more nuanced avoid. It has real strengths: approximately 294 miles of EPA-rated range, a conventional crossover layout, and familiar smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For many drivers, it is an appealing size and shape.

The concern is its GM Ultium foundation. Consumer Reports specifically identifies the Prologue as one of the Ultium-platform EVs with below- or well-below-average reliability. The Prologue also appeared on Consumer Reports’ 2026 least-reliable list with a reliability score of 25.

This matters because shoppers may reasonably expect a Honda-branded vehicle to deliver the same conservative reliability experience associated with Honda’s strongest conventional models. The Prologue should instead be evaluated as a jointly developed EV with its own platform-specific electronics, charging, software, and service considerations. The badge does not erase the platform’s reported concerns.

Who might still consider it: A discounted, later-production vehicle with verified software updates and a Honda dealer experienced with the GM/Honda EV platform. Confirm who performs high-voltage diagnostics and how long parts or warranty repairs typically take at that location.

5. Kia EV6: excellent driving hardware undermined by ICCU risk

The Kia EV6 remains one of the most appealing EVs to drive. Its performance, fast-charging architecture, packaging, and distinctive design are genuine strengths. Reliability evidence materially changes the buying calculation, however.

Consumer Reports assigned the EV6 a reliability score of 25 in its 2026 least-reliable list. Its reporting links problems in Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs to the integrated charging control unit, or ICCU. Reported consequences include charging failures, electrical problems, and loss of drive power.

A related Hyundai ICCU recall notice explains the failure mechanism: damage to the ICCU can prevent the 12-volt battery from charging and progressively reduce propulsion power, potentially resulting in a total loss of drive power. The exact applicable campaigns differ by make, model year, and VIN, so an EV6 buyer must check the vehicle rather than assume that a general internet discussion covers the specific car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A vehicle with documented completion of all applicable ICCU campaigns, current software, a healthy 12-volt battery, and meaningful factory coverage remaining. Ask for repair orders, not just a verbal statement that “the recall was done.”

Each tool is neatly organized in a handy case for easy storage and portability.

6. Kia EV9: a costly family vehicle with below-average reliability evidence

The EV9 solves a real problem. It provides three-row electric transportation in a market with few comparable choices. That utility is also why reliability and downtime matter so much: an EV9 is often intended to carry a family and serve as the household’s primary vehicle.

Consumer Reports placed the EV9 among the ten least-reliable vehicles for 2026, assigning it a reliability score of 24. Consumer Reports’ reporting on ICCU-related complaints also identifies the EV9 among the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs affected by charging-unit-related problems.

The recommendation is “avoid unless thoroughly verified,” not “never buy.” A family can tolerate a temporary inconvenience differently when a second vehicle is available, a lease provides an exit, or a dealer offers excellent support. The same risk is more serious when the EV9 is the only transportation for school, work, and long-distance travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A late-model example with all recalls closed, strong local dealer support, and a lease or warranty structure that limits long-term exposure. Before buying, test both AC and DC charging if possible and confirm that the dealer can service high-voltage and ICCU-related issues.

7. Genesis GV60: premium price, low reliability score, expensive downside

The Genesis GV60 is polished, technologically ambitious, and more luxurious than many mainstream EVs. Its premium positioning raises the standard it must meet. Consumer Reports assigned it a reliability score of 21 in its 2026 least-reliable ranking.

Consumer Reports also reports ICCU-related complaints in Genesis EVs, including the GV60, and notes that high-voltage battery or charging-system faults can produce expensive and disruptive repairs. The problem for a buyer is the mismatch between premium pricing and poor reliability evidence: paying more does not automatically buy a lower-risk ownership experience.

A GV60 can also be more sensitive to service quality than a simple commuter car. Specialized electronics, charging systems, software, and luxury equipment all make the dealer relationship important. A low-mileage used example is not automatically a safe bargain if it lacks a complete service record or has limited warranty remaining.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A certified used vehicle with substantial remaining warranty, complete maintenance records, a successful charging test, and a meaningful discount compared with more established luxury-EV alternatives.

8. Rivian R1T: owner appeal does not erase reliability risk

The Rivian R1T has genuine reasons to attract buyers. It combines an electric powertrain with pickup utility, off-road capability, distinctive design, and strong owner enthusiasm. Those strengths do not cancel out its reliability risk.

Consumer Reports gave the R1T a reliability score of 18 in its 2026 least-reliable ranking—the lowest score among the EVs included in that ranking. That result does not mean every R1T will fail. It does mean buyers should treat early-production and highly complex examples as higher-risk, particularly when service availability and downtime affect work, towing, or travel plans.

Rivian ownership is especially location-dependent. Before purchasing, identify the service center that would handle the vehicle, ask how the seller handles open campaigns and software updates, and determine whether a disabled truck could be recovered from your normal driving locations. A compelling truck is not necessarily a practical truck if support is difficult to reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A later-build truck near an accessible service center, with remaining warranty, documented software and mechanical updates, and a buyer who values its capability enough to accept service risk.

9. Mazda MX-30 EV: a used-market range problem

The Mazda MX-30 EV is not a new-car recommendation; it is a used-market caution. Mazda announced that it would discontinue the MX-30 EV in the United States after the 2023 model year.

Its small battery and approximately 100-mile EPA range can work for a short local commute, especially with reliable home charging. The issue is flexibility. A newer used EV can usually handle more errands, weather-related range loss, highway travel, and unexpected trips without requiring the same planning. The MX-30’s discontinued U.S. status also creates weaker future resale prospects and may make model-specific parts or support less convenient over time.

Public charging does not solve the central limitation. It may help during an occasional trip, but the vehicle still has a small range buffer and is poorly suited to regular highway travel. Do not buy one expecting it to function as a general-purpose family EV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who might still consider it: A very inexpensive local runabout with dependable overnight charging, predictable short trips, and a second vehicle available for longer journeys. Price it as a specialized commuter, not as a normal modern crossover.

Before buying any used EV on this list

A low price is not enough. Use this inspection sequence before leaving a deposit:

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. You can search by VIN or license plate. Check both open and completed campaigns, then ask a manufacturer dealer to confirm anything unclear. NHTSA says recall repairs are free at a manufacturer dealership.
  2. Confirm the exact vehicle’s warranty. Determine whether the battery, charging hardware, propulsion system, software-related repairs, roadside assistance, and transferable coverage are included. Do not assume that a remaining basic warranty covers every high-voltage component.
  3. Obtain a battery report. Ask the seller for a recent battery-health or state-of-health report. If it is unavailable, consider paying for an EV battery-health inspection before purchase. A battery report does not guarantee that electronics, charging hardware, or software will remain trouble-free, but it can reveal whether the central battery has unusual degradation.
  4. Inspect the 12-volt battery. EVs still use a low-voltage battery for computers, contactors, locks, displays, and other systems. Check its age and condition, and ask whether the vehicle has experienced repeated 12-volt warnings or no-start events.
  5. Test AC charging and, when practical, DC fast charging. Verify that the car begins charging, maintains the session, reports sensible charge information, and does not display warning messages. A short test is not a substitute for a full diagnostic scan, but refusing any charging test is a warning sign.
  6. Identify the actual service location. Call the dealer or service center with the VIN. Ask whether it services that exact model, performs high-voltage work, handles open campaigns, and has diagnostic capability for the vehicle’s platform.
  7. Read the repair history. Look for repeated charging faults, propulsion warnings, software problems, accident damage, water intrusion, and unresolved “unable to duplicate” visits. A clean title alone does not establish good EV health.
  8. Price the risk. Compare the vehicle with a proven alternative after including insurance, transport to the service center, charging equipment, warranty coverage, and the cost of being without the car during a repair.

Home charging can make ownership easier—but it cannot fix a bad vehicle

Home charging is one of the strongest practical advantages of EV ownership. The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says EV owners commonly charge at home using Level 1 or Level 2 equipment. Level 2 equipment is generally the more useful choice for regular charging, but the hardware and installation are separate decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A portable Level 2 EV charger can be useful for owners who need a movable charging unit for a compatible outlet, workplace, second home, or travel destination. Before buying one, verify:

  • the vehicle’s AC connector and whether an approved adapter is required;
  • the charger’s plug type and whether it matches the outlet;
  • the intended amperage and the continuous rating of the circuit;
  • whether the electrical panel and outlet can safely support the load;
  • weather and outdoor-use ratings if it will be used outside; and
  • whether the unit is portable EVSE or a permanently installed wall charger.

A portable EVSE is not a substitute for an electrician when a new circuit, outlet, or hardwired installation is required. DOE guidance puts common Level 2 equipment at roughly $500–$4,000 before installation and incentives, while installation generally must comply with electrical codes and may require a licensed contractor. If a home charging plan is the reason you are willing to accept a short-range or support-constrained EV, arrange a licensed home EV charger installer or electrical assessment before buying the car.

Connector compatibility also matters. Many North American EVs use J1772 for AC charging and CCS1 for DC fast charging, while newer vehicles may use NACS arrangements or an approved adapter. A replacement cable can solve a missing or damaged accessory; it cannot repair a failed onboard charger, ICCU, battery, software system, or vehicle-side charging port.

Finally, do not build the purchase budget around an assumed federal tax credit. IRS guidance cited for this research states that qualifying residential charging property placed in service from January 1, 2023, through June 30, 2026, could qualify for 30% of the cost up to $1,000 per charging port, subject to location and other requirements. Because this article is current to August 11, 2026, that guidance says the credit cannot be claimed for property placed in service after June 30, 2026. Verify any later legislative change with the IRS or a tax professional before treating a charging incentive as available.

When should you buy one of these EVs?

Use a higher evidence threshold when the vehicle is discontinued, the manufacturer’s U.S. support network is limited, the reliability score is poor, or the vehicle will be your only transportation. A sensible exception usually needs most of the following:

  • a large discount compared with a lower-risk alternative;
  • all recall and manufacturer campaigns closed by VIN;
  • current software and documented repair history;
  • a healthy high-voltage battery and 12-volt battery;
  • successful AC and DC charging tests where applicable;
  • a qualified service center within a realistic distance;
  • remaining factory, certified-used, or other clearly documented coverage; and
  • a second vehicle or a realistic backup plan for downtime.

For a discontinued or low-support EV, also price a used EV warranty or roadside assistance policy only after checking eligibility, exclusions, deductibles, towing limits, battery and software exclusions, and whether the contract is accepted by the service centers you would use. Do not assume a third-party policy covers a high-voltage battery, charging fault, manufacturer-support failure, or software problem.

What to buy instead

The better alternative is not necessarily the newest or longest-range EV. Look for a model with a longer service history, a functioning manufacturer network, complete recall support, a healthy battery, and a price that reflects its age. A slightly older but well-supported EV with a verified battery and local service is often a better ownership decision than a newer bargain with uncertain support.

For any candidate, compare the specific vehicle—not just the model name. Model-year changes, software revisions, production dates, recall completion, battery condition, previous damage, warranty transfer rules, and local dealer competence can change the risk substantially.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an open recall automatically mean I should never buy the EV?

No. A recall is not automatically proof that a vehicle remains unsafe after the manufacturer remedy is completed. Check the VIN, confirm which campaigns are open or closed, and have open recalls repaired through a manufacturer dealership. The greater concern is buying without knowing whether the repair is available, whether the vehicle has already been damaged by the defect, or whether the manufacturer can support the car.

Are these the nine least reliable EVs in existence?

No. This is a practical U.S. avoid list current to August 11, 2026, not a universal laboratory ranking. Consumer Reports reliability scores support caution for six of the vehicles, while the Fisker Ocean, VinFast VF 8, and Mazda MX-30 are included primarily because of manufacturer-support, recall, range, or discontinued-model concerns.

Why include the Mazda MX-30 if it is no longer sold new?

The MX-30 remains relevant to used-car shoppers. Mazda discontinued the U.S. MX-30 EV after the 2023 model year, and its approximately 100-mile EPA range limits flexibility compared with newer used EVs. It can work as a cheap local runabout, but it is a poor choice as a household’s only vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a home charger solve the problems with these EVs?

Home charging can improve convenience and make a short-range EV more usable, but it cannot fix vehicle-level problems such as ICCU failure, battery degradation, software faults, recall defects, or limited parts support. Confirm connector, amperage, circuit, and installation requirements before purchasing charging equipment.

The Bottom Line

The safest takeaway is not that every EV on this list is irredeemable. It is that buyers should demand unusually strong evidence before purchasing one. For most shoppers, a proven model with completed recalls, an accessible service network, a healthy battery, and a price that reflects its age is a better decision than chasing a bargain on an EV with uncertain support or below-average reliability data.
