For regular heavy towing, the 6.6L Duramax is the capability choice; for work the exact gas-powered truck can handle, the 6.6L gas V8 can avoid diesel-specific ownership requirements. This comparison is for the Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500 HD and 3500 HD—not the Silverado 1500, whose available Duramax is a 3.0L inline-six.
How the 6.6L engines compare
For the 2026 Silverado HD, Chevrolet pairs both engines with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission. The Duramax has substantially higher published power, torque, and maximum available trailering; the gas V8 has lower figures but may be sufficient when the specific truck’s rating meets the job.
| 2026 Silverado HD engine | Horsepower | Torque | Transmission | Chevrolet’s maximum available trailering |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 | 470 hp | 975 lb-ft | 10-speed Allison automatic | 36,000 lb |
| 6.6L gas V8 | 401 hp | 464 lb-ft | 10-speed Allison automatic | 19,080 lb |
These are Chevrolet’s published engine specifications and model-line maximum trailering claims for 2026, not ratings for every truck. Chevrolet describes maximum trailering figures as comparisons and notes that a specific vehicle’s capacity can vary. See the 2026 Silverado HD specifications and the 2026 Silverado HD trailering chart for details.
Which engine fits your towing job?
Choose the Duramax for repeated heavy towing
The Duramax’s 975 lb-ft of published torque and higher maximum available trailering make it the stronger candidate when you regularly tow heavy loads. The advantage matters only if the exact truck and hitch configuration are rated for the loaded combination you plan to pull.
#1 Best Overall
- Wide Compatibility - Fuel Injector Caps designed for fuel rail diagnostics in 2003-2022 Cummins, 2001-2022 Duramax, and 2008-2022 Ford engines.
- Efficient Functionality - Effectively blocks the fuel supply to cylinders or seals the common rail pipe, aiding in the identification of faulty diesel injectors and diagnosing engine knock sounds.
- Easy-to-Follow Instructions - Identify the faulty cylinder by removing the diesel fuel injection line from one cylinder at a time and installing the cap on the fuel rail. Increased fuel pressure indicates the faulty injector.
- High-Quality Construction - Made from full carbon steel with an anti-rust finish. These fuel line caps feature a galvanized surface for durability and resistance to breakage and deformation, ensuring a long service life.
- Important Note - Multiple fuel pressure block-off tools can be helpful, as several injectors returning small amounts of fuel can mimic the symptoms of a single injector returning excessive fuel.
Consider gas when its rating is enough
If your work is occasional or lighter, first check whether the specific gas-powered Silverado HD is rated for your trailer and truck load. If it is, the Duramax’s additional capability may not be necessary for your use. This is a practical decision based on the published capability gap, not a claim that one engine is always the better value.
Check the specific truck’s limits before buying
Do not use the model-line maximum as your personal towing limit. Chevrolet’s trailering chart varies by configuration, including cab, bed, drivetrain, wheels, and hitch. Its 2026 2500 HD gooseneck and fifth-wheel chart also accounts for the vehicle and trailer weight, plus the driver, passengers, fuel, options, and cargo.

- Compatible with 2001-2005 Chevy GMC Duramax 6.6L LB7 LLY and 2003-2007 Dodge Cummins 5.9L diesel models, also fits more rail fuel line with a 14mm fuel line nut
- This injector block-off caps can helps in identification of faulty diesel injectors and also used to diagnose engine knock sounds
- Made of high-quality carbon steel, surface antirust
- M14 x1.5 /14mm internal thread size nuts
- Includes 2x Injector Block-Off Tools
- Identify the exact truck configuration and the trailer hitch arrangement.
- Use the applicable Chevrolet trailering-chart entry for that configuration rather than the engine-level maximum.
- Compare the truck’s door-jamb carrying-capacity label with the loaded trailer and the people and cargo in the truck. Consult the Chevrolet trailering chart and the owner’s manual.
Ownership requirements and costs
Routine service and DEF
Chevrolet says Duramax ownership includes diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) refills and routine maintenance. The recommended service intervals are in the specific truck’s owner’s manual. The available figures do not establish a comparable maintenance-cost total for gas and diesel, so the engine specifications alone cannot show which will cost less to maintain.
Fuel use and purchase price
Compare dealer quotes for the same trim and truck configuration, then consider local fuel prices, annual mileage, how much of that mileage involves towing, and realistic fuel economy for your loaded use. Chevrolet lists gas-tank capacities ranging from 28 to 36 gallons across 2026 Silverado HD configurations; tank size is not a fuel-economy or driving-range figure. No matched gas-versus-Duramax fuel-economy statistic or supported break-even mileage is established here.

Verdict: which Silverado HD engine is best?
Choose the 6.6L Duramax if your regular loaded towing requires its higher capability and you accept DEF refills and diesel-specific routine service. Choose the 6.6L gas V8 if the exact truck safely meets your needs and you prefer to avoid those diesel-specific requirements. Neither engine is a universal total-cost winner: the right choice depends on the trailer, truck configuration, use pattern, and your local costs.
