Five India-focused compact SUVs are being linked to possible hybrid powertrains: the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Kia Sonet, Renault Bridger, Honda’s planned compact SUV and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor. Their prospects are not equally certain: a report describes Kia’s Sonet hybrid plan as confirmed, but several other powertrain combinations remain under consideration or unconfirmed. None of the reported future dates should be read as current showroom availability.
How firm are the reported hybrid plans?
The model names and forecasts below come from GaadiWaadi’s report published on October 3, 2026. The report does not establish five equivalent manufacturer announcements. In particular, it describes the Sonet HEV plan as confirmed, while calling the Taisor hybrid unconfirmed and treating other combinations as expectations or possibilities. No comparable confirmed specifications, prices or fuel-economy figures are available for all five prospective versions.

These dates are forecasts reported by GaadiWaadi, not confirmed retail launch dates. The report does not give exact launch months, prices or comparable efficiency figures.
Which compact SUVs could get hybrid power?
Maruti Suzuki Fronx: a possible strong hybrid, distinct from today’s Smart Hybrid
GaadiWaadi reports that the Fronx could become Maruti Suzuki’s first sub-4-metre SUV with its own strong-hybrid system. The reported configuration pairs a 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and battery, and is expected with the next Fronx update. These are reported expectations, not manufacturer-confirmed specifications.

There is already a separate hybrid-related offering: Maruti Suzuki’s official Smart Hybrid page lists the Fronx among models with Smart Hybrid availability. Its 2023 Fronx launch release identifies Progressive Smart Hybrid technology with the 1.0L K-Series Boosterjet. That current system does not verify the prospective Z-Series strong hybrid; the two should not be treated as the same powertrain.
Kia Sonet: the clearest reported plan, but few details
GaadiWaadi says Kia has confirmed plans to bring HEV technology to the Sonet in India by 2028 or 2029, following the next-generation model, which the report says is due in 2027. It provides no engine, motor or battery specifications. No Kia primary announcement corroborating those details was identified, so the plan and timing should be attributed to that report rather than presented as independently confirmed manufacturer information.

Renault Bridger: hybrid is one option under consideration
The report describes the Bridger as a sub-4-metre model positioned below the Duster, with production planned for 2027. It says Renault is considering multiple powertrains, including petrol, CNG, electric and hybrid options. Renault has not confirmed final hybrid specifications, so a hybrid version remains a possibility rather than an established launch configuration.
Honda’s new compact SUV: planned model, unconfirmed hybrid
GaadiWaadi reports that Honda has confirmed an India-focused sub-4-metre SUV by 2028. Petrol and hybrid powertrains are reported to be under consideration, but the hybrid option itself is not confirmed. No Honda primary-source corroboration for the hybrid plan was identified.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor: speculative possibility
The report says Toyota might use Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming Z-Series-based strong-hybrid system in the Taisor. Toyota has not confirmed a hybrid Taisor, and the suggested 2027 timing is speculative. Treat this as a possibility only, not an announced variant.

For now, the reported plans do not provide a sound basis for ranking these SUVs by mileage, price or value. When manufacturers publish details, compare the following for the specific India-market variant:

- Powertrain details: Check the engine, electric motor and battery specifications for the actual variant being sold.
- Efficiency evidence: Compare figures from a clearly identified test cycle or independent test, rather than treating unverified projections as results.
- Price and variants: Look for the confirmed price premium and which trims include the hybrid system.
- Ownership support: Check the warranty terms and local service support for the hybrid components.
Maruti’s existing Smart Hybrid information is useful context for the current Fronx, but it should not be used as proof of the reported future strong-hybrid system. For the other prospective versions, the key details above have not yet been established in the cited report.
