Best racing movies by what you want to watch
For engineering and endurance racing: Ford v Ferrari
Released in 2019 and also known as Le Mans ’66, this is the strongest pick if you want the machinery and team effort to matter as much as the drivers. 20th Century Studios describes it as the story of car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles building a Ford challenger to take on Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966. That gives the film a specific historical contest at its center, rather than a generic championship chase. 20th Century Studios’ film page presents the story as based on real events; that description is the studio’s framing, not an independent assessment of every scene’s historical accuracy.

For a Formula One rivalry: Rush
Ron Howard’s 2013 film follows the 1976 Formula One duel between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. The 24 Hours of Le Mans organization describes it as a real rivalry shaped not only by competition but also by friendship and mutual respect. Choose it when the appeal is two contrasting drivers pushing each other through a championship season, rather than a single endurance race. The 24 Hours of Le Mans’ film feature identifies the historical rivalry; it does not establish that every dramatic detail is literal history.
For a classic race-centered film: Le Mans
Steve McQueen stars in this 1971 film as Porsche driver Michael Delaney in a fictional story set around the Le Mans race. Motorsport UK includes it among its motorsport film recommendations. Its premise makes it the older, race-focused option on this list, distinct from the real-person stories in Ford v Ferrari and Rush. Motorsport UK’s December 2022 feature describes it as fiction.
#1 Best Overall
For stock-car racing drama: Days of Thunder
This 1990 film puts rookie Cole Trickle into the Winston Cup world, where businessman Tim Daland discovers him and pairs him with crew chief and car-builder Harry Hogge. Paramount’s synopsis places the action around the Daytona 500. It is the pick for a stock-car setting and a driver-and-crew story, rather than a documentary-style account of a named real race. Paramount’s film page outlines its fictional characters and racing setup.
For a gamer-to-driver underdog story: Gran Turismo
The 2023 film connects video-game competition to real-world motorsport. Sony Pictures describes it as based on the story of a gamer, a former race-car driver, and a motorsport executive joining forces to take on elite racing. Its “based on” framing gives the film a real-life starting point, but should not be read as a guarantee that each scene happened exactly as shown. Sony Pictures’ official page gives the studio’s account of the premise.
