The strongest current evidence covers five models, and it uses two different measures: J.D. Power’s three-year dependability study recognizes the Lexus GX and Toyota 4Runner, while Consumer Reports’ October 2025 ratings show predicted reliability scores for the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Those results can help narrow a shortlist; none guarantees that a particular vehicle will be trouble-free.
What “reliable” means in these comparisons
J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) surveys original owners of three-year-old vehicles about problems they have experienced, including symptoms, frequency, component failures and replacements. Its 2026 study surveyed 33,268 owners of 2023 model-year vehicles, with fielding from December 2024 through November 2025. The model-level award recipients included the Lexus GX and Toyota 4Runner. Consumer Reports’ reliability histories draw on subscriber survey responses across potential trouble spots. Its October 2025 SUV reprint gives predicted-reliability ratings for the 2025 Land Cruiser, Bronco and Wrangler. These predictions are not the same measure as J.D. Consumer Reports’ corresponding predicted owner-satisfaction ratings were 4/5 for the Land Cruiser, 3/5 for the Bronco and 3/5 for the Wrangler. How to use these findings when choosing
- Match evidence to the exact generation. The 4Runner illustrates why: the 2026 VDS result reflects 2023 vehicles, while Toyota describes the 2025 4Runner as all-new. Consumer Reports listed the 2025 4Runner as “IN TEST” in its October 2025 reprint, so that reprint did not supply a predicted-reliability score for the new generation.
- Choose capability for the terrain you expect. A trim name or reputation is not a substitute for checking the actual equipment on the vehicle. For example, Toyota identifies Crawl Control and a locking rear differential on specified 4Runner trims; the sources do not establish that this package is interchangeable with the Land Cruiser, Bronco or Wrangler’s equipment.
- Separate reliability from satisfaction and capability. Predicted reliability, owner-reported problems, owner satisfaction and off-road ability answer different questions. A strength in one category does not establish a strength in another.
- For a used SUV, assess the individual vehicle. Maintenance, prior damage, condition and use all affect dependability. A model-level study or predicted rating does not inspect a specific used example; request service records and arrange an independent inspection.
What these studies do not establish
J.D. Power reported aggregate problem rates of 198 problems per 100 vehicles for gas vehicles, 213 for hybrids, 237 for battery-electric vehicles and 281 for plug-in hybrids in its 2026 VDS. Those are study-wide powertrain figures, not scores for any of these off-road SUVs, and they should not be used to rank the five models above. The reviewed evidence also does not provide like-for-like ownership costs or comparable trail tests for all five.
“Bulletproof” is best treated as shorthand for a reputation or favorable evidence, never as a promise. Maintenance history, vehicle condition, use and model-year changes matter, and neither study can guarantee that an individual SUV will avoid failures.
