Paul McCartney’s historic cars range from a specially equipped Aston Martin DB5 to a coachbuilt Mini and a Lamborghini Espada. The five below are documented or reported past ownership stories—not a verified list of what he owns today. Their evidence varies: auction records give the DB5 a particularly firm provenance, while magazine reporting and McCartney’s own recollections support several of the others.

What cars did Paul McCartney own?

Five notable examples are a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, a customized Mini Cooper S DeVille, an Aston Martin DB6, a Lamborghini Espada Series II, and a Lexus hybrid reported as a gift. They make an unusually varied group: two British grand tourers, a small coachbuilt car that appeared on film, an Italian luxury car, and a later-era hybrid.

1. 1964 Aston Martin DB5: a grand tourer with a record player

McCartney ordered his DB5 before the Beatles’ 1964 world tour. The auction account says it was delivered to his accountants and registered in his name. It left the factory in Sierra Blue with a black interior and was fitted with a Philips Auto-Mignon record player—an apt detail for a musician who wanted to take records on the road. The car later sold at auction; it should not be confused with a car he is known to own now. The auction account documents its history.

Aston Martin’s retrospective also identifies McCartney as one of the DB5’s celebrated 1960s owners. The company says it originally built 887 DB5 saloons, 123 convertibles, and 12 bespoke coachbuilt shooting brakes. The standard engine was a 3,995cc unit rated at 282 bhp. Aston Martin’s DB5 history supplies those production and specification figures.

2. 1965 Mini Cooper S DeVille: a small car with bespoke details

McCartney’s Mini was transformed by Harold Radford & Co., the coachbuilder that modified cars for Beatles members. British GQ describes the Cooper S DeVille in California sage green, with a Webasto sliding sunroof, extra front fog lamps, Aston Martin taillights, and a woodgrain interior. It also appeared in Magical Mystery Tour, giving the compact Mini a place in the band’s on-screen history.

GQ reported that the car sold at auction in 2018 for £182,000, which the magazine described at the time as a record price for a Mini. That is a historical sale result, not an estimate of its current value. British GQ’s account covers the modifications and auction.

3. Aston Martin DB6: a roomier tourer with a tape recorder

McCartney’s DB6 carried the grand-touring idea into a larger car than the DB5. GQ describes its longer wheelbase and distinctive Kammback rear, and reports that McCartney specified a reel-to-reel tape recorder. The equipment makes the DB6 another car in his collection with a direct connection to listening to or working with music while travelling.

In an interview with Octane, McCartney recalled, “I’d originally had Aston Martins, a DB5 and 6, and I loved them.” That first-person recollection supports his ownership of both Aston Martins. GQ’s DB6 details and Octane’s interview provide the respective accounts.

4. Lamborghini Espada Series II: a distinctive Italian choice

Octane reports that McCartney bought a new Series II Espada in March 1972. Its account draws on Del Hopkins, a Lamborghini Concessionaires employee who carried out the car’s pre-delivery inspection and kept an index card naming McCartney as the buyer. McCartney also recalled the Espada in his Octane interview, saying, “Definitely the Espada, maybe the 400.”

The distinction matters because a red Lamborghini 400GT has sometimes been associated with McCartney, but the evidence is less certain: Octane says that the specific car seen near Savile Row has not been conclusively proven to have been his. The familiar story that Linda McCartney left the Espada’s brake off and it rolled into a pond is also not established; McCartney told Octane he did not remember it. Octane’s account sets out both the Espada evidence and the uncertainty around the other stories.

5. Lexus hybrid: a later-era gift, with no model confirmed

British GQ reports that Lexus, a sponsor of McCartney’s 2005 US tour, sent him a luxury hybrid around his 65th birthday. The magazine says he was pleased with the car but objected to the fact that it had been flown from Japan, which he considered environmentally harmful. GQ does not name the model, so it is most accurate to call it a Lexus hybrid rather than assign it a specific badge. GQ’s report gives the available details.

Why this selection stands out

The cars show different versions of good taste rather than one consistent formula. The DB5 and DB6 are classic British grand tourers, chosen with music-related equipment. The Mini takes a practical, compact car and gives it coachbuilt character, while the Espada brings a more dramatic Italian approach to luxury. The Lexus hybrid belongs to a later period and adds a different emphasis to the story.

The evidence is not identical for every car. The DB5 has auction documentation for its registration, original specification, and sale history. Octane supplies McCartney’s recollections of the Aston Martins and Espada, along with a buyer record for the Espada. GQ reports the Mini and Lexus stories. Together, these sources support a historical selection, not a definitive account of McCartney’s entire car collection.
