5 Car Battery Models to Steer Clear Of, According to Consumer Reports’ Reported Rankings

A December 2025 report identifies five car batteries with reported weaknesses, but group size, chemistry, fitment, and current warranty terms matter before choosing a replacement.

Five batteries singled out in a December 2025 SlashGear summary of Consumer Reports’ rankings have reported weaknesses in cold cranking, reserve capacity, projected life, or value. That does not make them universally unsafe or unsuitable: each is designed for a particular battery group, and a replacement must match your vehicle’s fitment and specifications.

What the reported rankings say—and what they do not

The five picks span four battery group sizes, so they are not direct substitutes for one another. SlashGear’s December 15, 2025 article describes Consumer Reports evaluations across three dimensions: battery life, reserve capacity, and cold-cranking performance. In that account, life reflects charge-discharge cycling at high under-hood temperatures; reserve capacity indicates how long a battery can run without the alternator charging it; and cold-cranking performance concerns starting power at low temperatures. A CCA figure alone does not establish overall quality.

The model concerns and figures below are reported by SlashGear, with a January 2026 summary from The News Wheel. The underlying current Consumer Reports tables and the test dates for the compared batteries were not independently verified in those articles, so treat the results as reported rankings rather than a live, complete test database. (SlashGear; The News Wheel.)

The five models flagged in the reports

Econocraft 24F-E — Group 24/24F

SlashGear reports below-average cold-weather performance, with average life and reserve results. It gives the battery about 585 CCA, the lowest figure in its Group 24/24F comparison and 124.25 amps below that group’s reported average. The article named EverStart Maxx-24S as a same-price alternative with a longer warranty. It also reported a historical price of about $90 and a 90-day warranty; those are not current quotes or confirmed live terms.

#1 Best Overall
ACDelco Gold 48AGM (88864541) 36 Month Warranty AGM BCI Group 48 Battery
  • High density negative paste, improves performance and increases battery life
  • Enhanced life alloy or Silver Calcium stamped alloy increases cycle life and improves performance
  • Calcium lead positive grid, maximizes conductivity and allows for low resistance
  • Robust envelope separator with puncture resistant back, allows for increased acid circulation and prevents shorts. Improved acid circulation, helps the battery to remain cool, and extend battery life
  • Vent cap design that resists acid leakage

Econocraft 35E — Group 35

The reported concerns are weak cold performance, low longevity, and the weakest reserve capacity in the group. SlashGear gives it about 490 CCA, roughly 140 amps below the Group 35 average in its comparison. It names Interstate Mega-Tron Plus MTP-35 as a better-performing alternative at a higher reported price. The article’s approximate $100 price and 90-day warranty are historical figures, not current terms.

EverStart AGM H5 (non-Platinum) — Group 47/H5

This model is reported to have weak life-cycle performance, middling cold performance, and modest reserve capacity relative to competing H5 batteries. Do not confuse it with the EverStart Platinum AGM H5/47: the reporting distinguishes that Platinum model and presents it as a recommended option. Similar names do not establish identical performance or specifications.

Weize Platinum AGM Battery BCI Group 24F Automotive Battery, 120RC, 710CCA, 36 Months Warranty, Dimensions 10.75" L x 6.81" W x 8.98" H
  • ✅Batter dimensions: 10.75" L x 6.81" W x 8.98" H, Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). ✅Please ensure to verify the dimensions and terminal position before making a purchase to guarantee compatibility with your vehicle to avoid any fitment issues.
  • With a 70AH capacity and 710 cold cranking amps (CCA). Provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage:12V. Charging Voltage:14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current:0~21A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
  • Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
  • Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
  • Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.

Econocraft H6-E — Group 48/H6

SlashGear reports a very low projected life score for this group, alongside middle-of-the-road reserve and cold-weather marks. The article cites AutoZone product-page specifications of 615 CCA, 755 cranking amps, and about 75 minutes of reserve at a 25-amp load. It also reported a historical price of about $100 plus a core charge and a three-month replacement warranty. Check current product details before relying on any of those figures or terms. The accessible reporting does not name a same-group alternative.

Duralast Platinum 51R-AGM — Group 51R

The article says this battery may crank well in cold weather but performs poorly on life relative to its price. It identifies Super Start Platinum AGM as an alternative in the same group. SlashGear reported a historical price of about $250–$260 and a four-year free-replacement warranty; current price and warranty terms may differ.

How to choose a replacement for your car

A group-size match from a roundup is not enough to confirm that a battery fits a particular vehicle. Before buying, use your owner’s manual or vehicle manufacturer’s fitment guidance, then compare candidates that meet the same requirements.

  • Fit and terminals: Confirm the required BCI group and terminal layout, not just a similar label.
  • Chemistry: Use the battery type specified for the vehicle. Do not assume an AGM battery and a conventional flooded battery are interchangeable.
  • Starting power: Check the manufacturer’s required CCA and account for the climate in which the vehicle is used.
  • Reserve and life: Consider reserve capacity and longevity evidence alongside cold-cranking numbers; strength in one measure does not mean strength in the others.
  • Warranty and total cost: Verify current replacement terms and compare the total price, including any core charge. Historical prices and warranties quoted in 2025 coverage may no longer apply.

For model-specific fitment and current terms, consult the vehicle maker’s guidance and retailer listings, including AutoZone’s battery catalog. Confirm the exact battery variant rather than relying on group size alone.
