This shortlist compares five options by price, size, drivetrain availability and driving focus—not by snow, wet-road, gravel or braking tests. Prices exclude taxes, fees, dealer adjustments and options; local pricing and inventory can vary.
How to use this shortlist
For the newest choices, start with the 2026 Toyota Camry, Toyota Crown, Mazda3 Sedan or Subaru WRX. The fifth option, the Subaru Legacy, is a 2025 model-year car; whether new examples remain depends on local inventory. AWD availability also differs: some choices offer it on specific trims, while the WRX and Legacy list it as standard.
“Under $50,000” here means the cited manufacturer-listed base MSRP or displayed price is below that amount. It is not an out-the-door price or a promise that a particular trim is available at that price locally.
The five AWD sedans
1. 2026 Toyota Camry AWD: hybrid efficiency and value
Toyota lists the 2026 Camry LE AWD at a $31,125 base MSRP and estimates 50 mpg city and 49 mpg highway. Those figures are Toyota’s estimates for that trim; actual fuel economy varies. Toyota also shows other AWD Camry trims below $50,000 in base MSRP. The Camry is a strong first look if hybrid efficiency and a mainstream midsize sedan are priorities. See Toyota’s Camry trims and specifications.

2. 2026 Toyota Crown XLE, Limited or Nightshade: a higher-priced hybrid
Toyota lists AWD Crown base MSRPs of $41,440 for the XLE, $45,950 for the Limited and $48,765 for the Nightshade. Each is below the budget before taxes, fees, options or dealer adjustments. The Platinum is listed at $54,990, so it does not qualify. The Crown is the shortlist’s more premium-positioned hybrid choice, but its listed prices leave less room under the cap than the Camry’s. Check Toyota’s 2026 Crown information.
3. 2026 Mazda3 Sedan Carbon Edition or Turbo Premium Plus: compact and trim-specific AWD
Mazda identifies the Carbon Edition and Turbo Premium Plus sedan trims as having standard i-Activ AWD. Its model page lists the Mazda3 Sedan line from $24,650 and displays $37,335 for the Turbo Premium Plus; these are Mazda-displayed prices, not guaranteed local transaction prices. The Mazda3 is a compact car, unlike the midsize Camry, Crown and Legacy, so compare cabin and cargo needs as well as price. See Mazda’s 2026 Mazda3 Sedan trims.

5. 2025 Subaru Legacy: a midsize alternative only if new stock remains
Subaru lists the 2025 Legacy sedan with standard Symmetrical AWD and a starting price of $26,810. The cited Subaru pages do not establish a 2026 Legacy or confirm remaining new-car inventory. Treat it as a prior-model-year possibility: check with local dealers before including it in a new-car search. See Subaru’s Legacy comparison and Legacy features.

AWD describes a drivetrain’s ability to send drive torque to the wheels; it does not guarantee traction or shorter stopping distances on every surface. The manufacturer information cited here does not provide a comparable test of these five cars’ braking, tires, ground clearance or performance on ice, snow, rain or gravel. Mazda also advises drivers to adapt to road and weather conditions.

For winter or other difficult conditions, assess the tires fitted to the specific car and the roads you actually drive. Do not treat AWD, a sedan body style or a manufacturer’s all-weather language as evidence that severe conditions are safe to travel in.
Quick Recap
How to choose among them
- For hybrid efficiency: compare the Camry and Crown; Toyota’s cited Camry LE AWD estimate is 50 city / 49 highway mpg.
- For a compact sedan: look at the AWD Mazda3 Sedan Carbon Edition or Turbo Premium Plus.
- For a sport-focused sedan: consider the WRX, recognizing that its performance positioning is not a comparative winter test.
- For a midsize Subaru: check whether a new 2025 Legacy is actually in local stock.
- For a strict $50,000 ceiling: compare local out-the-door quotes, not just base MSRP, and verify that the exact AWD trim is available.
