5.7 HEMI Vs. 5.7 HEMI With eTorque: Which RAM 1500 Engine Should You Choose?

The conventional 5.7 HEMI is simpler, but the eTorque version usually offers smoother stop/start operation and access to higher towing configurations. Here is how to choose between them.

The 5.7L HEMI and the 5.7L HEMI with eTorque use the same basic 395-horsepower V8, but they are not identical powertrains. eTorque adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that can improve stop/start operation, provide short bursts of launch assistance, and support some of Ram’s highest published towing configurations.

For a comparable, properly maintained Ram 1500, the eTorque version is usually the better all-around choice if you tow frequently or drive in traffic. The conventional HEMI remains attractive for used-truck buyers who value a simpler electrical system and want fewer hybrid-specific components to repair. On an older truck, condition and service history should outweigh the badge on the fender.

What is the difference between the two 5.7 HEMI engines?

eTorque is not a different displacement or a replacement for the HEMI. It is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system added to the 5.7L V8.

A conventional 5.7 HEMI uses a normal alternator and starter arrangement. The eTorque truck uses a belt-driven motor-generator, a lithium-ion battery pack, and additional control electronics. The motor-generator can restart the engine, recover energy during deceleration, and provide temporary assistance when the truck pulls away from a stop.

The truck still runs primarily on gasoline. eTorque is not a plug-in hybrid, does not drive the Ram 1500 on electric power alone, and does not need to be charged from an external outlet.

5.7 HEMI vs. eTorque specifications

Specification 5.7L HEMI 5.7L HEMI with eTorque
Displacement 5.7 liters 5.7 liters
Horsepower in late-model Ram 1500 applications 395 hp 395 hp
Published peak engine torque 410 lb-ft 410 lb-ft
Transmission in recent Ram 1500 applications 8-speed automatic 8-speed automatic
Hybrid system None 48-volt mild hybrid
Cylinder deactivation MDS/Fuel Saver technology, depending on year MDS/Fuel Saver technology
Stop/start operation Conventional or equipment-dependent eTorque-supported system

Do not add eTorque’s temporary motor assistance to the HEMI’s 410 lb-ft rating. Early Ram material described up to 130 lb-ft of supplemental assistance, but that does not create a continuous 540 lb-ft engine. The published engine rating remains 395 hp and 410 lb-ft.

How eTorque feels on the road

The two trucks have essentially the same V8 character: strong low-speed response, a familiar HEMI exhaust note, and similar peak power. eTorque is most noticeable during engine restarts and low-speed launches, not during full-throttle acceleration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A conventional stop/start system can produce a noticeable starter engagement when the engine fires back up. The belt-driven motor-generator in an eTorque truck generally makes that transition smoother. It can also provide a small amount of assistance when moving away from a stop, although the truck will not feel like a substantially more powerful HEMI.

If your priority is passing acceleration or a dramatic performance difference, eTorque is not a reason to expect a faster truck. Its advantages are refinement, energy recovery, and the way Ram configured it with certain towing packages.

Towing: eTorque usually has the advantage

Do not determine towing capacity from the engine name alone. Ram’s rating changes with cab, bed length, drivetrain, axle ratio, tires, trim, cooling equipment, payload, and towing package.

For 2024, Ram listed properly equipped 5.7L HEMI eTorque configurations with towing capacity up to 12,750 pounds, including the applicable Max Tow configuration. For 2026, Ram’s published towing guide lists certain 5.7L HEMI configurations with the 8HP75 transmission at up to 11,320 pounds. Other listed 4×4 Crew Cab configurations are rated at 9,590 pounds, showing why the truck’s exact equipment matters.

The practical conclusion is that eTorque-equipped trucks were used for some of Ram’s highest late-model HEMI towing ratings. It does not mean every eTorque truck can tow more than every conventional HEMI truck.

Before buying a truck for a specific trailer, check:

  • The VIN-specific Ram towing chart.
  • The door-jamb payload label.
  • The axle ratio and drivetrain.
  • The receiver and trailer-package equipment.
  • The trailer’s actual loaded weight and tongue weight.

Payload is especially important. A trailer’s tongue weight, passengers, tools, and cargo all count against the truck’s available payload, even when the engine’s maximum tow rating appears adequate.

Fuel economy: expect a modest benefit

eTorque can recover energy while slowing, assist with restarting, and reduce some of the work required during stop/start operation. It is not a full hybrid, so the fuel-economy improvement is not comparable to a hybrid passenger car.

Ram’s 2024 buyer’s guide listed the 5.7L HEMI with eTorque at:

Configuration City Highway
4×2 18 mpg 23 mpg
4×4 17 mpg 22 mpg

Those figures should not be applied to every model year or truck. Real-world fuel economy depends heavily on axle gearing, cab and bed configuration, tire size, payload, trailer weight, idling, short trips, and driving style. A 3.92-geared 4×4 with large tires and a trailer can use considerably more fuel than a lightly loaded 4×2 with highway-oriented gearing.

Reliability and repair considerations

Why some owners prefer the conventional HEMI

A non-eTorque truck does not have the 48-volt battery pack, belt-driven hybrid starter-generator, battery-pack control module, hybrid control processors, or associated high-voltage wiring and power electronics.

That simpler layout can be appealing if you plan to keep a used Ram well beyond its factory warranty. It does not make the conventional HEMI automatically trouble-free; it simply removes several eTorque-specific components from the repair equation.

What eTorque adds—and what it can reduce

The eTorque motor-generator handles engine restarts and charging functions, which reduces the conventional starter and alternator duties. It also enables smoother stop/start operation. In return, the truck has more components that require specialized diagnosis when a charging or hybrid-system fault occurs.

Warnings that deserve attention

Potential warning signs include:

  • A battery-charge warning light.
  • A “Battery Saver On Some Systems May Have Reduced Power” message.
  • A “Service Stop/Start System” warning.
  • Heated seats, the heated steering wheel, rear defroster, HVAC functions, audio, telematics, or the 115-volt inverter being disabled or reduced.

These messages do not automatically prove that the 48-volt battery has failed. Other possible causes include a charging-system problem, weak battery condition, excessive electrical demand, aftermarket accessories, repeated short trips, long periods of storage, or a replacement battery that was not fully charged or properly installed.

On a used eTorque Ram, ask whether the belt-driven starter-generator, 48-volt battery, or hybrid control modules have ever been replaced. A warning-free test drive is useful, but it does not replace a scan for stored fault codes and a review of service records.

eTorque warranty detail

For 2024 Ram 1500 gas models, the federal emissions warranty lists several hybrid-system components for 8 years or 80,000 miles, including the auxiliary hybrid control processor, battery pack control module, belt-driven hybrid starter-generator, hybrid control processor, and motor-generator unit.

This is not a blanket promise that every eTorque-related repair will be covered for eight years or 80,000 miles. Coverage depends on the vehicle’s emissions certification, location, component, failure, warranty terms, and the applicable warranty documents. Confirm coverage using the truck’s warranty booklet and VIN rather than relying on a seller’s description.

Used Ram 1500 inspection checklist

  1. Confirm the equipment by VIN. Use the window sticker, build sheet, or dealer VIN report. Do not assume the truck has—or lacks—eTorque based only on the HEMI badge.
  2. Check for open recalls. Search the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and ask whether recall repairs were completed.
  3. Test it cold and hot. The engine should start cleanly in both conditions, and the stop/start system should not produce abnormal noises or repeated warning messages.
  4. Scan all relevant modules. A basic code reader may not reveal every hybrid or charging-system fault.
  5. Inspect the battery and charging history. Look for battery warnings, previous charging-system repairs, aftermarket electrical equipment, and signs of extended storage.
  6. Listen for engine and exhaust noise. Abnormal valvetrain or exhaust-manifold noise deserves diagnosis; do not label a sound “HEMI tick” without testing.
  7. Verify payload before towing. Compare the door-label payload with the trailer’s loaded tongue weight, passengers, and cargo.
  8. Review oil-change records. The condition and maintenance history of the particular truck matter more than whether eTorque is present.

Which 5.7 HEMI should you choose?

Choose the 5.7L HEMI with eTorque if you:

  • Want the best chance of getting one of Ram’s higher HEMI towing configurations.
  • Tow in traffic or make frequent stops.
  • Prefer smoother automatic engine restarts.
  • Are buying a newer Ram where eTorque is standard or difficult to avoid.
  • Want the potential benefit of applicable emissions-warranty coverage for listed hybrid components.

Choose the conventional 5.7L HEMI if you:

  • Prefer a simpler charging and electrical system.
  • Plan to own the truck long after its factory warranty expires.
  • Are comparing used trucks and the non-eTorque example has better records or condition.
  • Want to avoid potential repairs involving the 48-volt battery, motor-generator, and hybrid control modules.
  • Do not need the specific towing configuration associated with eTorque.

What about the 2026 Ram 1500?

The comparison is less straightforward for a new 2026 truck. Ram’s current information lists the 5.7L HEMI primarily in eTorque-equipped applications, with 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. Current web pages and towing materials do not label every application in exactly the same way.

For a 2026 purchase, verify the window sticker, VIN equipment report, and truck-specific towing guide. Do not assume that every trim offers the same conventional-versus-eTorque choice found in earlier used Ram 1500 model years.

Common claims that need correcting

Claim What is actually true
“eTorque adds 130 lb-ft to the HEMI’s 410 lb-ft.” The assistance is temporary motor support. The published engine rating remains 410 lb-ft.
“Every 5.7 HEMI Ram has eTorque.” Earlier fifth-generation Ram 1500s were sold with both conventional and eTorque configurations.
“eTorque is a plug-in hybrid.” It is a gasoline-powered 48-volt mild-hybrid system and is not externally charged.
“The eTorque battery has an EV battery warranty.” Specific components may receive emissions-warranty coverage, but that is not the same as a full EV propulsion-battery warranty.
“Non-eTorque always gets better fuel economy.” Fuel economy depends on the complete truck configuration and operating conditions.

FAQ

Is the 5.7 HEMI with eTorque more powerful than the regular 5.7 HEMI?

Not according to the published engine ratings. Both late-model Ram 1500 applications are rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of engine torque. eTorque adds temporary motor assistance, but that assistance should not be added to the engine’s torque figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does eTorque improve towing capacity?

It can, depending on the truck’s complete configuration. Ram used eTorque-equipped 5.7 HEMI trucks for some of its highest published towing ratings, but cab, bed, axle ratio, drivetrain, tires, payload, and towing equipment determine the actual rating.

Is a non-eTorque HEMI more reliable?

It has fewer eTorque-specific components, including no 48-volt battery, belt-driven motor-generator, or hybrid control modules. That can simplify long-term repairs, but the condition and maintenance history of the individual truck are more important than the system alone.

How can I tell whether a used Ram 1500 has eTorque?

Confirm the equipment using the VIN, window sticker, build sheet, or dealer report. A HEMI badge is not enough because Ram offered both conventional and eTorque 5.7L configurations in earlier model years.

The Bottom Line

For most comparable Ram 1500s, choose the 5.7L HEMI with eTorque if you tow regularly, drive in stop-and-go traffic, or want smoother stop/start operation. Choose the conventional HEMI when simplicity and long-term serviceability matter more—especially if the used truck has clearly better records and condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever version you buy, verify the VIN-specific towing rating, inspect the electrical system, and compare payload with your actual trailer. For 2026, confirm the exact equipment because the conventional-versus-eTorque choice is not presented consistently across every current Ram application.
