What can fail, and what is the risk while towing?
NHTSA says an improperly designed trailer tow module may cause trailer lights not to illuminate and trailer brakes to fail. The notice concerns the trailer’s lighting and braking systems; it does not say the tow vehicle’s own service brakes fail.

NHTSA warns that trailer brake lights and turn signals that do not illuminate reduce visibility to other drivers, increasing crash risk. Trailer brakes that fail also increase the risk of a crash. The notice does not provide interim driving instructions, so it does not establish a general stop-drive or towing prohibition for every potentially affected vehicle.
How do I check my VIN for the Ram and Jeep trailer tow module recall?
- Find your vehicle identification number (VIN). Use the VIN rather than relying on the model-year list, since recall eligibility is vehicle-specific.
- Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup or the Mopar recall portal. NHTSA’s February 3 notice said VINs would become searchable February 10, 2026; check the current result for your vehicle.
- If the result shows this recall as open, contact an authorized dealer to arrange the remedy. NHTSA’s acknowledgment lists FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and its Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
- If you plan to tow before the repair, ask the dealer about safe towing for your specific vehicle and follow any current instructions in your notice or VIN result. NHTSA’s recall guidance says owners should follow interim safety guidance in their notice and contact a local dealership for a free recall repair.
NHTSA said owner notification letters were expected to be mailed March 24, 2026. That was a scheduled date in the notice, not confirmation that any particular owner received a letter; use the VIN lookup rather than waiting for mail.

Will the recall repair cost me anything?
No. The U.S. remedy is a free replacement of the trailer tow module at a dealer. FCA US’s report describes the replacement as an updated module design. The recall’s stated remedy is dealer replacement; the reviewed notices do not establish an owner-purchased aftermarket controller or generic module as a safe substitute.

What prompted the recall?
FCA US opened its investigation on August 28, 2025. In its report filed with NHTSA, the company said that, for reports received from November 20, 2023 through January 12, 2026, it had recorded 108 customer assistance records, 107 warranty claims, 101 field reports and 285 repair orders potentially related to the issue. As of January 15, 2026, FCA US said it was not aware of potentially related accidents or injuries. That is the manufacturer’s statement as of that date, not a claim about events after it.

What if the vehicle is registered in Canada?
Canadian owners should check the Canadian recall listing rather than assume the U.S. vehicle list applies. Transport Canada recall 2026043, originally published February 2, 2026 and updated March 2, 2026, describes certain 2024–2026 Jeep Wagoneer S, 2024–2026 Jeep Cherokee entries, and 2025–2026 Ram vehicles, including Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis-cab incomplete vehicles. The Canadian notice says FCA Canada will notify owners and advise them to have the trailer tow module replaced at a dealership. Check the relevant Canadian recall lookup or contact an FCA Canada dealer for your vehicle’s status and repair arrangements.
