iOS 26 makes CarPlay look different with its Liquid Glass redesign, widgets, Live Activities, Tapbacks, pinned conversations, and compact incoming-call layout. But the biggest day-to-day improvements come from a few controls that are easy to miss.
Before changing anything, park safely. The available options can vary by iPhone model, vehicle, screen, region, language, and third-party app support. Apple’s overview of the changes is available in its iOS 26 feature guide.

1. Configure your CarPlay widgets
Widgets are one of iOS 26’s most useful CarPlay additions, but the default arrangement may not show the information you actually need. You can choose which widgets appear, change their order, and decide whether CarPlay automatically rotates through them.
How to change the widgets
- On your iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap General > CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets to add one.
- Drag widgets to rearrange them, or use the remove control to delete one.
- Turn Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions on or off.
Apple says the number of widget stacks depends on the vehicle’s CarPlay screen. Not every iPhone widget is available in CarPlay; an app generally needs to provide a compatible CarPlay widget. Screen size and the vehicle’s CarPlay implementation also affect what appears. See Apple’s instructions for customizing CarPlay widgets.

A practical starting arrangement is Calendar for upcoming appointments, Weather for a quick glance before leaving, and Home for supported garage-door or home-access controls. You can also add a compatible third-party app widget.
Smart Rotate can switch widgets automatically based on context. Leave it enabled if you want the dashboard to adapt. Turn it off if you prefer the same predictable widgets every time. Widget Suggestions can add contextually relevant options; disable it if you want a fixed, uncluttered setup.
If you dislike the result: return to Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Widgets and remove, reorder, or restore the options.

2. Try Smart Display Zoom
Some CarPlay screens can use Smart Display Zoom to change the scale and layout of the interface. Depending on the vehicle and display, this may make better use of a large or unusually shaped screen and allow more dashboard information to fit comfortably.
How to find it
- Connect your iPhone to CarPlay.
- Open the Settings app on the CarPlay display.
- Look for Smart Display Zoom.
- Turn it on or choose the available display option.
This setting is not guaranteed to appear in every car. Apple’s developer documentation describes it as an option for certain screen configurations, so its availability depends on the vehicle’s display and CarPlay implementation.
After enabling it, compare the number of visible app rows and widget stacks, the spacing around navigation information, and the readability of text and icons. A denser layout is not automatically better—especially on a lower-resolution display or at night.

If you dislike the result: reopen CarPlay’s Settings, turn Smart Display Zoom off, and reconnect CarPlay if the layout does not refresh immediately. Apple discusses the feature and supported layout behavior in its CarPlay developer presentation.
3. Automatically activate Driving Focus
If incoming alerts regularly interrupt you while driving, set CarPlay to activate Driving Focus automatically. When active, it silences or limits notifications and text messages instead of allowing every alert to compete for your attention.
How to enable it
- Open Settings on the CarPlay display.
- Tap Driving Focus.
- Select Activate With CarPlay.
Driving Focus is not a universal block on communication. On the iPhone, use Settings > Focus > Driving to configure allowed people and apps. Check those exceptions before enabling the automatic mode if you need alerts from family, work, or other important contacts.

A passenger can also be affected if their iPhone connects to CarPlay. When Driving Focus activates for a passenger, Apple provides an I’m not driving option.
A gentler alternative: Announce Messages
If you mainly want to stop Siri from reading messages aloud rather than suppressing notifications broadly, adjust Announce Messages instead. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications > CarPlay. You can enable or disable Announce Messages and choose which notifications Siri reads. 4. Enable Sound Recognition for horns and sirens
Sound Recognition can show a visual alert when the iPhone detects selected sounds, including car horns, sirens, and a baby crying. It may be useful for drivers who use hearing aids, listen to audio at low volume, or have difficulty hearing environmental sounds inside the vehicle.
How to enable it
- Open Settings on the CarPlay display.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Select Sound Recognition.
- Turn it on.
- Choose the sounds for which you want notifications.
This is an assistive convenience, not an emergency-warning system. Apple warns not to rely on Sound Recognition in circumstances where you could be harmed, in high-risk or emergency situations, or for navigation. Missed detections and false positives are possible, and the feature requires a supported iPhone model with availability that can vary by country or region. It also continuously listens for the selected sounds, which may matter to your privacy or battery preferences. Read Apple’s Sound Recognition guidance.
If you dislike it: return to CarPlay Settings > Accessibility > Sound Recognition and turn it off or deselect individual sounds.
Other CarPlay settings worth trying
- Appearance: CarPlay’s Settings app includes appearance controls, including a dark appearance suited to low-light conditions.
- Dashboard suggestions: Hide suggestions if you want a less busy dashboard, or leave them visible for contextual shortcuts.
- Show Album Art: Turn album art off to reduce visual clutter, or leave it on to make the Now Playing screen easier to recognize.
- Wallpaper: In CarPlay, open Settings > Wallpaper, choose an option, and tap Set.
- App arrangement: On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Customize. Drag icons, remove supported apps, or add them again from More Apps. Apple documents this in its CarPlay icon arrangement guide.
What to do if a setting is missing
Missing controls do not necessarily mean your iPhone is malfunctioning. Smart Display Zoom, Sound Recognition, widget availability, widget quantity, and some layout choices depend on supported hardware, software, region, language, app support, and the vehicle’s CarPlay system.
- Park safely, disconnect CarPlay, and reconnect it.
- Confirm the iPhone is updated and Siri is enabled.
- Check whether the vehicle supports the relevant CarPlay screen layout.
- Restart the iPhone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- If the option remains absent, consult the vehicle manufacturer.
Also remember that wired and wireless CarPlay can behave differently between vehicles. Do not assume a missing option can be restored by changing the connection method.
