They target the most common low-risk causes without assuming that every problem is the phone’s fault.
If Android Auto suddenly stops connecting, start with the cable, then remove the old car pairing, and finally refresh Android Auto and the phone’s software. These three fixes are quick, low-risk, and cover three different failure points: the physical data connection, stale Bluetooth or Android Auto records, and software that has become stuck.

Do the troubleshooting while parked. If none of these steps works, the problem may be the vehicle’s compatibility, infotainment system, or receiver firmware—not a setting on your phone.

1. Replace the USB cable—not just the charger
A cable can still charge your phone while failing to carry the data Android Auto needs. That makes a worn, damaged, charge-only, or unsuitable cable one of the easiest problems to overlook. Google specifically recommends replacing the cable when Android Auto worked before and then stopped, and advises using a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet) where practical. It also recommends avoiding USB hubs and extensions. Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance explains the cable requirements.

- Unplug the existing cable from both the phone and the car.
- Look into the phone and vehicle USB ports for obvious lint or debris. Do not probe either port with a metal object.
- Try a short, known-good data cable. Match the connectors your setup requires: USB-A to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C.
- Plug the cable directly into the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port. Do not use a hub, extension, or adapter chain while testing.
- Keep the phone unlocked during the first reconnect and accept any Android Auto permissions or prompts that appear.
Do not look for a proprietary “Android Auto cable.” The practical shopping description is a USB cable for Android Auto or a short USB-C data cable. The important details are data transfer support, the correct connector at each end, suitable length, and a reputable manufacturer. Belkin documents data-synchronisation cables, while Anker documents cables that can work with Android Auto when the phone and vehicle USB ports meet the necessary requirements. Neither brand guarantees compatibility with every car or phone.
If the new cable works, the old one may have been damaged internally even if it continued charging. If a second known-good data cable produces exactly the same result, move to the pairing and software checks instead of repeatedly buying cables.
2. Forget the car and pair it again
Android Auto can retain an old connection record that prevents a previously connected vehicle—or a second car—from starting correctly. Removing that record gives the phone and infotainment system a clean pairing attempt.

- Unplug the phone from the vehicle.
- Open Android Auto’s settings on the phone. On many Android phones, the path is Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. The exact labels vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
- Open Previously connected cars.
- Use the menu to forget the relevant car, or forget all listed cars if the correct vehicle is unclear.
- Open the car’s Bluetooth settings and remove the phone’s old entry if it remains there.
- Restart the phone and restart the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- With the car parked and the infotainment system switched on, reconnect the phone and approve the setup prompts.
For a wireless Android Auto connection, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services should be enabled during initial setup. Google says the first wireless connection uses Bluetooth pairing; the system then establishes the Android Auto connection over Wi-Fi. Follow Google’s wireless Android Auto setup guidance if the car supports wireless mode.
Forgetting a car does not repair an incompatible head unit, and it is not the same as factory-resetting the phone or vehicle. It simply removes saved connection information so the next pairing is not relying on stale data.
3. Refresh Android Auto before doing anything drastic
A phone restart and a few reversible software checks can clear a frozen Android Auto process. Use them before deleting app data or resetting the phone.

- Restart the phone. This can clear a temporary Bluetooth, USB, or background-process failure.
- Install available updates. Check for Android system updates and updates for Google apps and services. Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones for car-display use, so you should not assume that installing a separate Play Store app is always required. Google’s general Android troubleshooting sequence recommends restarting and checking updates before more destructive steps.
- Force-stop the relevant app or service. Go to Settings > Apps, find Android Auto if it is listed, and tap Force stop. Depending on the phone, Android Auto may be integrated into system software or appear under a Google service rather than as an obvious standalone app. Menu names vary.
- Reconnect. Open Android Auto if the phone exposes it as an app or settings page, then connect to the car again while parked.
- Clear the cache if the problem continues. In the Android Auto or relevant Google-service app settings, open Storage & cache and choose Clear cache. This is less disruptive than deleting storage.
Leave Clear storage, Clear data, or similar options until later. They can remove saved app state and may require setup again. A Google Android Auto community troubleshooting flow also discusses checking USB data-transfer mode, updating Android Auto and Google software, and clearing cache or storage for Android Auto and Google services. Treat those as additional diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.
When the car—not the phone—is the problem
A USB port does not automatically mean that a vehicle supports Android Auto. The car or aftermarket receiver must be compatible, Android Auto must be enabled in the infotainment system, and some receivers need a firmware update. Google notes these requirements in its Android Auto connection and compatibility guidance.
If the cable, pairing reset, and software refresh do not help:

- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility list for your exact model year and infotainment system.
- Confirm that Android Auto is enabled in the head unit’s settings.
- Try restarting the infotainment system using the vehicle manufacturer’s documented procedure.
- Check the manufacturer’s support pages for an infotainment or receiver firmware update.
- Test another compatible phone, if available. If multiple phones fail in the same USB port, suspicion shifts toward the car, port, or head unit.
- Check whether the vehicle has a specific Android Auto-capable USB port; some cars include ports that provide charging only.
Do not routinely factory-reset the phone or car as a first response. A reset can erase settings without fixing a missing compatibility feature, a damaged USB port, or outdated receiver firmware.

If wired Android Auto works reliably but you want to stop plugging the phone in every time, a wireless Android Auto adapter may be useful. This is an upgrade, not a repair for an incompatible vehicle. Motorola says its MA1 connects to an existing Android Auto-enabled USB port, pairs with the phone over Bluetooth, and uses 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless Android Auto. Motorola also warns that compatibility depends on the specific vehicle and phone. See the manufacturer’s MA1 information before buying.
In other words, a wireless adapter cannot add Android Auto to a car that never supported it. It normally converts a compatible wired setup into a wireless one, so confirm that wired Android Auto already works and check compatibility for the exact car and phone combination.

The quickest order to try
- Swap in a short, data-capable USB cable and connect directly to the correct vehicle port.
- Forget the car in Android Auto and Bluetooth, restart both systems, and pair again.
- Restart the phone, apply updates, force-stop Android Auto or the relevant Google service, and clear its cache if necessary.
- If the failure remains, investigate vehicle compatibility, the USB port, infotainment settings, and receiver firmware.
That order starts with the cheapest and least disruptive checks while keeping the diagnosis honest: not every Android Auto failure is caused by the phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my phone charge but Android Auto not work?
A charging cable may still power the phone but fail to carry the data connection Android Auto needs. Try a short, high-quality data cable that matches the phone and vehicle connectors, connected directly without a hub or extension.
Will a wireless Android Auto adapter work in any car?
No. A wireless adapter generally requires a car that already supports wired Android Auto. It does not add Android Auto to an incompatible vehicle or head unit.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What if none of these Android Auto fixes works?
Check the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility list, confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system, and look for receiver firmware updates. A USB port may provide charging without supporting Android Auto.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Replace the cable first, forget and re-pair the car second, and refresh Android Auto and Google software third. If all three fail, check the vehicle’s compatibility and infotainment firmware before attempting a factory reset or replacing the phone.
