Top Gear’s October 6, 2026 roundup counts 26 entries, but it does not describe 26 equivalent vehicles you can buy today. The list mixes models reported on sale, future plans, a supplier powertrain and hybrids that are not true range-extender EVs. A true series range extender uses an electric motor to drive the wheels and an onboard engine to generate electricity; availability and specifications still need to be checked for your country.
What counts as a range-extender EV?
In a true series range-extender EV—often called an EREV—the electric motor propels the vehicle. A combustion engine runs a generator to produce electricity, which can supply the motor or recharge the battery. Leapmotor says of its system that “The range extender is never mechanically connected to the wheels.” That is the manufacturer’s description of its own architecture, not an independent efficiency assessment.
Some vehicles in the roundup use related but different systems. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can use its engine to propel the wheels as well as drive electrically. Nissan e-Power vehicles use an engine to generate electricity, but cannot be plugged in. Those distinctions matter: a plug-in EREV can use grid electricity for its electric driving, while a non-plug-in series hybrid cannot.
What the 26-entry list actually contains
The status and figures below are those reported by Top Gear on October 6, 2026, not a verified global inventory of dealer stock or deliveries. “On sale” refers to the article’s wording; availability can differ by country. Planned dates, ranges, power outputs and prices are reported claims, not independent test results.

Which entries have stronger official confirmation?
Manufacturer information supports some details beyond the roundup, but it does not make every entry’s availability or range independently verified. Leapmotor’s January 23, 2026 Stellantis Media release describes the REEV architecture as electric-motor propulsion with the extender generating electricity, and says the engine is never mechanically connected to the wheels. It does not, by itself, validate Top Gear’s B10 and C10 combined-range figures.
XPeng’s HKEX-filed report provides a useful example of why a range figure needs its test cycle. The company says its P7+ EREV launched and began deliveries in January 2026, with a 1,550 km combined CLTC claim; it gives the G7 EREV a 1,704 km combined CLTC claim and the same January 2026 launch and delivery start. The report also says the G6 EREV began deliveries in March 2026 and the X9 EREV in November 2025. These are XPeng-reported CLTC figures, not directly comparable with a WLTP or EPA result.

How to compare range without being misled
“Range” can mean electric-only distance, total distance using both battery and fuel, or a figure measured under a particular test cycle. Those are different measures. For example, the roundup gives combined-range claims for the B10 and C10 but does not establish their test-cycle basis, while it describes the L03’s expected figure as WLTP. XPeng labels its cited P7+ and G7 figures CLTC. CLTC, WLTP and EPA results should not be treated as interchangeable, and a large combined-range number does not establish efficiency.
- Check the market and status: distinguish an announced plan from a vehicle being delivered, and confirm local order and delivery availability with the manufacturer or importer.
- Separate electric-only and combined range: ask how far the vehicle can travel on battery charge alone, then what test cycle and conditions apply to any total-range claim.
- Confirm the drivetrain: check whether the engine only generates electricity, can also drive the wheels, or is part of a non-plug-in hybrid system.
- Match the vehicle to the use: compare body style and intended workload—such as a pickup, SUV, taxi or van—rather than treating all entries as substitutes.
- Check charging and price locally: plug-in capability and confirmed local pricing affect the ownership decision; the roundup does not provide confirmed prices for most entries.
What the list says about the market—and what it cannot prove
The mix of large pickups and SUVs among the announced North American models points to a use case where buyers may want electric propulsion but also value a fuel-powered generator for longer trips. The International Energy Agency’s 2025 Global EV Outlook described announced EREVs outside China through 2026 in a similar way, alongside two then-available European examples from Mazda and Leapmotor. That is a dated market snapshot, not a current count. The IEA also noted that wider adoption depends partly on how battery-electric range, affordability and charging infrastructure compare.

The 26 entries are therefore best read as a map of reported products, plans and adjacent technologies—not as a ranked buying list. The roundup does not establish comparative efficiency, cost per mile, lifecycle emissions or reliability, and its quoted power and range figures are not a substitute for independent testing.
