It is a three-row SUV offered in XLE and Limited grades, with front- or all-wheel drive depending on configuration. Toyota estimates a range of 270 to 315 miles for AWD versions and 287 miles for the FWD version; EPA results and pricing have not been announced. Toyota’s announcement was updated September 25, 2026.
What is the electric Toyota Highlander?
The 2028 Highlander is Toyota’s first three-row battery-electric vehicle for the U.S. market and its first battery-electric vehicle assembled in America, according to the company. The two grades are XLE and Limited. XLE is available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD); Limited is AWD only. Toyota says every grade includes Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and Toyota Audio Multimedia.
All specifications and range figures below come from Toyota’s manufacturer announcement, not an independent road test. Toyota has not published EPA range ratings or final pricing.
Range, battery and power by configuration
Battery capacity and range vary by drivetrain and grade. Toyota’s estimated range ratings are:

These are Toyota’s estimates, not independently measured or EPA-confirmed results. The company cautions that actual range varies with weather, driving style and other factors. AWD adds power and, with the 95.8-kWh battery, the highest stated range; the smaller AWD battery has a lower estimate than the FWD configuration.
Charging and connector
Toyota specifies a North American Charging System (NACS) port and support for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging. A dual-voltage 120V/240V charging cable is included. For DC fast charging, Toyota estimates a 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes under ideal conditions; it has not supplied a broader real-world charging guarantee.

A separate Level 2 home charger is optional rather than mandatory, since the vehicle includes a charging cable. Check connector and electrical compatibility before buying any charging equipment.
Seating and cargo space
Second-row captain’s chairs are standard. An available second-row bench lets the Highlander seat up to seven; Toyota says the bench is available on XLE AWD. The third row is described by Toyota as seating two adults.

Toyota’s announcement does not give cargo capacity with both rear rows folded, so that figure cannot be compared here.
Cabin equipment and grade differences
Toyota lists a 14-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch driver display, SofTex-trimmed seating, heated front seats, customizable ambient lighting and device charging throughout the cabin as standard equipment. A fixed glass panoramic roof is available. The Limited adds ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats. Toyota has not specified a full feature-by-feature grade breakdown in the announcement.

Safety, AWD features and vehicle-to-load
Toyota identifies Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, the Star Safety System, Toyota Audio Multimedia and Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking as standard. These are manufacturer-reported features, not independent safety ratings. Toyota also lists Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control among AWD features.
The Highlander will offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability for powering external devices, but Toyota says bidirectional accessories must be purchased. The announcement does not yet establish compatible accessory details or confirm home-backup capability, so those uses should not be assumed.

When will the 2028 Highlander EV go on sale?
Toyota expects AWD versions with the 95.8-kWh battery to begin sales in early 2027 as 2028 model-year vehicles. The XLE FWD with the 77.0-kWh battery is expected in mid-2027. Toyota has not announced MSRP and says pricing will come closer to the on-sale date; there is no reliable price comparison to make yet.
Toyota says the vehicle will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. Battery modules are to be assembled at Toyota’s Liberty, North Carolina plant and by a supplier partner.
