The changes bring R1’s trim names closer to R2’s, but the vehicles serve different buyers: R1S is a three-row SUV, R1T is a pickup and R2 is a five-seat midsize SUV. Rivian’s US starting prices are $83,990 for R1S and $79,990 for R1T, while R2 starts at $44,990.
What changed for the 2027 R1S and R1T?
Rivian announced the 2027 model-year updates on August 13, 2026. The central change is a simpler three-tier lineup: Premium, Performance and Quad replace the earlier motor-count naming structure. Rivian says the new arrangement aligns R1 more closely with R2’s trim structure. Independent coverage has read the changes as helping preserve R1’s premium position as the smaller R2 enters the market; Rivian’s announcement describes the product and lineup changes but does not state that R2’s launch caused them.

How do the new R1 trims compare?
Rivian’s published output and range figures vary by body style and configuration. The ranges below are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees of what a driver will achieve. Rivian says range depends on tires, drive modes, weather, HVAC use and accessories; figures for most configurations use 22-inch road wheels and tires.

For the new R1T 20-inch Adventure All-Season setup, Rivian lists 300 miles for Premium and 380 miles for Premium Long Range, alongside the 348-mile Performance estimate shown above. These are configuration-specific manufacturer figures; changing wheel and tire combinations can change the estimate.
Rivian’s US starting prices are $83,990 for the R1S and $79,990 for the R1T. Taxes and fees apply, and configured prices will depend on selected equipment and options.

What does the R1S six-seat option add?
The optional layout replaces the second-row bench with two heated captain’s chairs and a center pass-through to the third row. Rivian says the chairs fold flat and retain car-seat tie-downs. The pass-through lets passengers reach the third row without first moving a second-row seat.
A seven-seat bench remains available on both Premium interiors and on the Black Mountain Signature interior for Performance and Quad. Buyers should check the configuration page for availability with the exact trim and interior they want.

What is new on the R1T?
The new combination is a 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel with a Goodyear tire. Rivian says the setup is intended to add traction without the usual on-road range sacrifice associated with a more capable tire. It is standard on R1T Premium and a no-cost option on Performance.
That standard-equipment and option status is specific to Rivian’s stated R1T configurations. A replacement tire listing should not be assumed to fit: confirm the precise size and load rating for the vehicle and wheel configuration before buying.

How much cheaper is R2, and is it a substitute for R1?
Rivian’s R2 page lists three US trims and starting prices. Its prices and timing are subject to change; taxes and fees apply.

R2 is a five-seat midsize SUV, not a direct replacement for the three-row R1S or the R1T pickup. The lower price may make it the more relevant choice for buyers who want a smaller SUV, but the right comparison depends on seating, size, utility, delivery timing and the exact configuration—not just the entry price.

As one independent data point, Edmunds’ R2 Performance covered 304 miles in its EV range test, compared with its 330-mile EPA estimate, as reported by the Associated Press. That result applies to Edmunds’ tested vehicle and conditions, not every R2 trim or trip.

What should buyers compare before choosing?
- Configured price: compare the vehicles as equipped, not just their starting prices; account for taxes, fees and selected options.
- Body style and seating: decide whether you need the R1S’s third row, R1T’s pickup format or R2’s five-seat midsize-SUV layout.
- Range evidence: distinguish Rivian estimates and EPA estimates from independent test results, and account for the wheels, tires and conditions that apply to your configuration.
- Drivetrain and performance: compare the trim’s motor setup and output with your needs rather than treating the trim labels as interchangeable.
- Utility: weigh cargo, towing and intended use against vehicle size; confirm the capabilities of the specific configuration.
- Delivery timing: check the live product pages, since availability and stated timing can change.
