Both the 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series have been officially announced, but the available specifications do not establish a head-to-head winner. Mercedes has published U.S. prices and detailed figures for three S-Class variants; BMW has outlined the 7 Series lineup and new cabin technology without matching U.S. pricing in its announcement. Here is what is confirmed—and what remains unknown.
What is announced, and when will the cars arrive?
Mercedes-Benz revealed its updated S-Class in January 2026. Its U.S. quick reference guide, dated May 13, 2026, lists the S 500 4MATIC, S 580e 4MATIC and S 580 4MATIC; it says the S 580e is expected at U.S. dealerships in Q4 2026. Mercedes-Benz USA’s guide does not give a specific arrival date for the other two variants.
BMW announced the seventh-generation 2027 7 Series on April 22, 2026. BMW says global production and the worldwide market launch are scheduled to begin in July 2026 at Plant Dingolfing. That is a manufacturer timetable, not confirmation of local dealer stock. BMW says the 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid will follow in Q1 2027, with a V8 M Performance model later. BMW’s announcement does not specify the later model’s timing.
In short, both cars have been announced, but the announced dates differ by model and market. An announcement does not establish that a particular vehicle is available at a nearby dealer.

How do the announced powertrains compare?
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Mercedes-Benz USA lists three 2027 S-Class variants. Its published output figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

Each listed price excludes the $1,550 destination and delivery charge. For the S 580e, the guide lists a 21.96-kWh usable battery, 60-kW DC charging and 9.6-kW AC charging. Its electric range, fuel economy and curb weight are marked TBA, so those figures cannot yet be compared reliably with other versions or with BMW’s announced models.
BMW 7 Series
BMW says the 2027 lineup launches with two electric variants, the i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive, and two combustion models, the 740 and 740 xDrive. The company says the 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid is due in Q1 2027, followed later by a V8 M Performance model. BMW’s announcement does not provide matching U.S. prices or a complete set of comparable specifications for these models.
What do the cabins and technology offer?
Mercedes-Benz USA lists an MBUX Superscreen as standard equipment on the S-Class. It comprises a 12.3-inch driver display, a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch front-passenger display. The U.S. guide also lists AIRMATIC air suspension, 4.5-degree rear-axle steering, an illuminated grille surround and next-generation DIGITAL LIGHT as standard. Some functions may depend on digital extras, account terms, packages or geography; check the guide for the specific vehicle and configuration.

BMW says the 2027 7 Series brings Neue Klasse technologies into the model, including Panoramic iDrive, Panoramic Vision and a new passenger screen. It also highlights a 31.3-inch Theater Screen with Zoom support. These are BMW’s announced features; the release does not establish a like-for-like comparison of screen functions or included services against the Mercedes equipment list.
What has Mercedes said about the scale of the update?
Mercedes-Benz says more than 50 percent of the new S-Class—around 2,700 components—was newly developed or re-engineered. That is the company’s own figure, not an independent audit. CEO Ola Källenius described the changes in a Mercedes-Benz press preview published in English translation: “With over 50 percent of new or revised parts, around 2,700 components, the new S-Class strengthens the Mercedes-Benz position in the areas of comfort, innovation and safety.”

BMW calls its 7 Series update “the most extensive model update ever undertaken by BMW.” That is BMW’s characterization, not an independent assessment. Neither claim by itself demonstrates which sedan is more comfortable, advanced or capable.

The U.S. S-Class guide provides a clear price and dimension baseline. It lists all three variants with a 126.6-inch wheelbase and 208.8-inch overall length; cargo capacity is 14 cubic feet for the S 500 and S 580, and 9 cubic feet for the S 580e. The table reflects the U.S. guide’s figures and pricing before destination and delivery.

Because BMW’s announcement does not supply corresponding U.S. prices, dimensions or cargo figures, a price-matched or space-by-space comparison is not available from these published figures.
Does either car win the comparison?
Not on the evidence available here. Mercedes has published specific U.S. prices, dimensions, cargo capacities and equipment for its three listed S-Class variants. BMW has announced a broad powertrain plan and prominent cabin technologies, but its release does not provide comparable U.S. pricing or a matching specification set. Neither source is a road test, and neither establishes a winner for driving, comfort, value or reliability.
