The refreshed Mercedes-Benz S-Class was unveiled at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart on January 29, 2026. Known in the United States as the 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan, it is not an all-new generation, but Mercedes-Benz says more than half of the car—about 2,700 components—was newly developed, updated, or re-engineered.
The refreshed Mercedes-Benz S-Class is no longer just a preview: Mercedes-Benz unveiled it at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart on January 29, 2026. In the United States, the car is identified as the 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan. It remains a heavily revised W223-generation flagship rather than an all-new, eighth-generation S-Class, but Mercedes-Benz says more than half of the vehicle—approximately 2,700 components—was newly developed, updated, or re-engineered.
That extensive update brings a larger illuminated grille, new star-themed lighting, a standard MBUX Superscreen, MB.OS computing architecture, expanded driver assistance, predictive suspension technology, revised electrified powertrains, and a more connected rear cabin. The familiar S-Class silhouette remains, but the technology and detail changes are substantial.

It is a major W223 refresh, not a new generation
The distinction matters. The refreshed car keeps the W223 generation’s basic architecture and recognizable long-wheelbase flagship profile. Mercedes-Benz’s claim that over 50 percent of the car was newly developed does not turn it into a clean-sheet model, but it does indicate a much broader engineering program than a facelift limited to bumpers, lamps, and trim.

The most visible changes are concentrated in the lighting, grille, cabin electronics, assistance systems, and powertrain technology. The sheetmetal is largely familiar, so the new S-Class will look evolutionary in daylight. At night, however, its lighting signature should make the update much easier to identify.
A more assertive front end and star-themed lighting
The grille is approximately 20 percent larger than before and can be illuminated. For the first time on an S-Class, buyers can also specify an illuminated Mercedes star on the hood, although that feature is subject to market and timing restrictions.
The new DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps use a twin-star signature and micro-LED technology. Mercedes-Benz says the high-resolution illumination field is approximately 40 percent larger, giving the car a more elaborate lighting identity and potentially improving how its lighting functions are presented on the road.
At the rear, the lamps receive three chrome-framed star signatures. A side-sill projector can cast Mercedes-Benz lettering onto the ground beside the vehicle, adding another presentation-focused detail to a car already designed to make arrival part of the ownership experience.
MANUFAKTUR personalization expands
Mercedes-Benz says the MANUFAKTUR program offers more than 150 exterior colors and more than 400 interior colors, along with additional upholstery and trim choices. Those numbers describe the broader personalization program, not a guarantee that every combination will be offered in every country or on every U.S. configuration.
The MBUX Superscreen becomes standard
The central cabin technology change is the standard MBUX Superscreen. Launch specifications describe a dashboard-spanning arrangement consisting of:
- a 12.3-inch digital driver display;
- a 14.4-inch central touchscreen; and
- a 12.3-inch front-passenger display.
The system belongs to the latest MBUX generation and is linked to Mercedes-Benz’s MB.OS operating architecture, Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud connectivity, over-the-air updates, an AI-based “Hey Mercedes” Virtual Assistant, and an enhanced Zero Layer interface. MBUX Surround Navigation also uses mapping technology based on Google Maps.

The assistant is intended to support more natural dialogue and AI-based interaction. Mercedes-Benz and launch coverage describe a more conversational interface, including Google automotive AI integration in the relevant presentation. That should not be confused with autonomous driving: an AI voice assistant can help with interaction and information, but it does not independently operate the vehicle or remove the driver’s responsibility.

Other front-cabin changes include a revised center console with two phone-charging pads, digital vent controls that can retain preferred vent positions, optional heated front seatbelts, and a steering wheel with more physical controls than the outgoing arrangement. These changes address daily interaction as much as they add visual technology.
The rear cabin becomes a mobile boardroom
The S-Class continues to treat rear-seat comfort as a primary part of its mission. With the available First-Class rear compartment, passengers can receive two 13.1-inch displays, two detachable MBUX remote controls, and integrated video-conferencing capability.
Dolby Atmos is available as an audio option, while additional ambient-lighting and comfort features reinforce the car’s executive-transportation role. Equipment depends on the selected configuration and market. The rear displays and conference functions are luxury-car cabin equipment—not a reason to assume that every S-Class will include the same technology as standard.
MB.OS and MB.DRIVE expand the technology platform
Mercedes-Benz describes MB.OS as a purpose-built computing architecture for the vehicle. The platform is intended to support connected services, over-the-air updates, navigation, the MBUX interface, and the vehicle’s expanded MB.DRIVE assistance suite.

At market launch, Mercedes-Benz identified China for this capability. U.S. availability was planned for a later stage, while other markets depend on local regulations and approvals.
This remains a driver-assistance system. Mercedes-Benz explicitly says its technology does not relieve the driver of responsibility. The driver must continue to monitor the vehicle, the road, and the surrounding environment and be ready to take over.

Suspension and rear-wheel steering
Rear-axle steering is standard at 4.5 degrees, with up to 10 degrees available as an option. The system can reduce the car’s turning circle at low speeds while improving stability and composure at higher speeds, although the exact benefit depends on the selected configuration.
AIRMATIC air suspension remains standard. E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL is available for buyers seeking the more advanced active suspension system. Mercedes-Benz says intelligent damping and cloud-linked road-condition information can help the suspension react preemptively to road imperfections. Independent launch coverage characterized the system as using GPS, road data, and cloud connectivity to anticipate uneven surfaces.

Safety and air-quality upgrades
The refreshed S-Class adds or expands several protection and well-being features:
- PRE-SAFE Impulse belt pretensioners;
- up to 15 airbags, depending on configuration;
- an electric air filter with ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL;
- optional heated seatbelts; and
- additional cabin comfort and ambient-lighting functions.
These are manufacturer-described safety and comfort enhancements. They should not be presented as crash-test results, and the launch information does not establish an independent safety rating for the relevant 2027 U.S. model.
Powertrains: six-cylinder engines, plug-in hybrids, and a V8
The international range includes gasoline and diesel six-cylinder engines, plug-in hybrids, and a V8. Mercedes-Benz lists the S 450, S 500, S 580, S 580 e, S 450 e, S 350 d, and S 450 d among the global saloon variants. Model names, outputs, equipment, fuel-economy figures, and availability vary by country.
The updated S 580 4MATIC uses the M 177 Evo V8. Mercedes-Benz lists output at 395 kW, or 537 horsepower, and 750 Nm of torque.

For the U.S.-oriented S 580e plug-in hybrid, launch coverage reported an increase to 576 horsepower, up from 510 horsepower in the outgoing version. EPA-certified electric range for the refreshed model was not yet available in that reporting, so it would be premature to quote a final battery-only range.
The U.S. variants described in launch coverage retain a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. International press-kit figures should not be directly substituted for U.S. certification data, which can differ because of market-specific testing, equipment, and homologation.
Mercedes-Benz also refreshed the S-Class GUARD
The update extends to the special-protection S-Class GUARD. The S 680 GUARD 4MATIC uses Mercedes-Benz’s Integrated Protection System and a protective cell certified to VR10, which Mercedes-Benz describes as the highest civilian protection level.

Pricing: the German figure is not a U.S. MSRP
Mercedes-Benz’s international press information lists a German starting gross price of €121,356.20 including 19 percent VAT for the S 350 d 4MATIC Saloon. German ordering opened January 30, 2026.
That price is not a U.S. MSRP and should not be converted into an American starting price. U.S. pricing, standard equipment, option packages, destination charges, and final model availability require a separate Mercedes-Benz USA announcement.

For U.S. buyers, the most important unanswered questions are final pricing, EPA figures, standard equipment, exact launch timing, and which MB.DRIVE functions will be approved.
