MotorTrend picked the 2027 Volvo EX60 over the Mercedes-Benz GLC400 in its October 9, 2026 comparison test, favoring the Volvo’s comfort, cabin usability and value in the tested configurations. The result may surprise drivers focused on headline specs: MotorTrend’s Mercedes was quicker, went farther in its 70-mph range test and added more miles in its 30-minute charging test. The Volvo won because the testers judged it the more livable choice overall—not because it led every category.
Why MotorTrend chose the Volvo
Matt Taylor’s MotorTrend comparison placed the EX60 first and the GLC400 second. The review praised the Volvo’s comfortable, calm cabin and practicality, while finding the Mercedes’ technology and driving dynamics appealing but its large screen potentially tiresome and its heavily optioned test-car price hard to justify. Those are the publication’s judgments about the vehicles it tested, not a universal ranking.

The basic trade-off is clear: the Mercedes made the stronger case for drivers who prioritize measured highway range, acceleration and a more capable-feeling interface. The Volvo made the stronger case for testers who wanted an easygoing cabin and better value in this particular matchup.
How the test vehicles compare
The table combines MotorTrend’s test-car results with manufacturer figures. Prices and range depend on trim and configuration; the sources and qualifications are included with the figures.

Unless otherwise identified, performance, charging, cargo and towing figures in this table come from MotorTrend’s October 9, 2026 comparison and apply to its test vehicles. Its fast-charge figures are miles added during that publication’s test, not guaranteed results at every charger or battery state. Maximum charging power is a peak specification, not typical charging speed. Verify the exact trim, equipment and market specification before relying on cargo or towing figures.
Price: the test-car gap is not the whole story
MotorTrend’s tested GLC cost $85,450, compared with $69,545 for its EX60 P10 AWD—a $15,905 difference between those specific vehicles. The GLC’s listed base price in the comparison was $64,950, while the EX60 P10 AWD base was $68,745. Those test-table figures are not the same as current manufacturer listings: Mercedes-Benz USA lists a $63,500 starting price, and Volvo’s U.S. release lists P10 AWD Plus at $60,750 and P10 AWD Ultra at $67,350. These are different configurations and sources, so compare same-day quotes for the trims and options you would actually buy.

It identifies P6 and P10 AWD as launch configurations, with P12 AWD available later. A lower entry price does not mean every EX60 matches the equipment in MotorTrend’s P10 AWD test car.

EPA estimates and the comparison’s road test
MotorTrend’s comparison lists EPA ranges of 350 miles for the GLC and 312 miles for its EX60 P10 AWD. In the publication’s 70-mph road-trip test, the Mercedes covered 356 miles and the Volvo 280. These are separate measures: the EPA figures are labeled estimates in the comparison, while the higher or lower road-trip results reflect MotorTrend’s test conditions and vehicles.

Volvo’s figures have changed as the EX60 moved from preliminary estimates to current product information. Its May 18, 2026 U.S. release described up to 307 miles for P6, 322 for P10 AWD and 400 for P12 AWD as preliminary estimates based on EPA cycles, with official EPA estimates pending. The current U.S. product page states EPA-estimated up to 307 miles for P6 and up to 330 for P10 AWD; it continues to describe P12’s up-to-400-mile figure as preliminary, with official EPA estimates to follow. Do not substitute one configuration’s number for another.
Charging results vary by stop length
In MotorTrend’s fast-charge test, the EX60 added more range in the first 15 minutes—206 miles versus 198 for the GLC. After 30 minutes, the GLC led with 312 miles added versus 268 for the Volvo. MotorTrend also reported that some testers had difficulty getting the Volvo to charge. Charger compatibility, battery temperature and state of charge can all affect an individual stop, so the publication’s results are useful comparisons, not promises.

MotorTrend’s table lists maximum AC/DC charging power as 12.0/330 kW for the Mercedes and 19.2/370 kW for the Volvo. Volvo’s current U.S. page says the EX60 has a built-in NACS port and access to more than 60,000 DC fast chargers across North America; the page’s stated 10-minute range addition is subject to its own caveats. A peak-power rating alone does not tell you how much range a particular vehicle will add during a trip.

The small measured acceleration advantage belongs to the GLC, even though the Volvo has the higher listed horsepower.

The reviewers liked the Mercedes’ driving dynamics and found its MBUX assistant responsive to their requests. But they found the 39.1-inch Hyperscreen could become tiresome. For a buyer who welcomes a screen-led cabin and prioritizes the Mercedes’ technology and road-trip range, those strengths may outweigh the price and interface trade-offs identified in the review.
Volvo: calmer and more practical in feel
MotorTrend described the EX60 as comfortable and more livable. Its Google-based interface struck the reviewers as less capable and less polished visually than the Mercedes’ system, but they felt its relative simplicity suited the Volvo’s calm interior. The cargo figures are close behind the rear seats; the Mercedes has more listed volume with the seats folded and a larger frunk, while the Volvo’s towing capacity is lower.
Volvo’s May 2026 release describes P6 Plus equipment including a 15-inch OLED screen, Google built-in with Gemini, Pilot Assist and a 21-speaker Bose system. That equipment description is for the named P6 Plus trim, not a guarantee that every EX60 configuration has the same features.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Mercedes-Benz GLC400 if
- You prioritize the longer 70-mph range result in MotorTrend’s test.
- You want the quicker measured 0–60 time and more screen-forward technology.
- You need the higher towing figure listed in MotorTrend’s comparison and have confirmed it applies to your market and configuration.
Choose the Volvo EX60 if
- You value a calmer, comfortable cabin and the more livable character MotorTrend preferred.
- You are shopping a particular EX60 trim whose current price and equipment suit your budget; Volvo’s U.S. release lists multiple P6 and P10 AWD configurations.
- You are comfortable weighing MotorTrend’s shorter road-trip result against Volvo’s current EPA-estimated P10 AWD range and your own charging routes.
MotorTrend’s answer is the EX60, on the strength of its overall livability and value in that test. The GLC400 is the more persuasive alternative for buyers who put range, technology and driving engagement first. Before deciding, compare configured prices for equivalent equipment and check charging access along the journeys you actually make.
