Published in February 2025, it described a lightly camouflaged prototype and anticipated exterior changes while leaving the powertrain uncertain. Mercedes-AMG has since announced the production 2027 model, including its cabin technology and revised V8.
What the 2025 prototype report actually showed
Motor Authority’s February 26, 2025 report described an AMG GLS 63 prototype wearing light camouflage. It pointed to prospective changes at both ends, including new lighting, revised fascias and a redesigned grille. Its accessible text did not describe a newly visible interior, so the report alone does not substantiate the headline’s interior-spy-photo premise. Read the Motor Authority report.
At that point, mechanical details were unclear. A newly electrified V8 was discussed as a possibility, not a confirmed specification. Mercedes-AMG’s later announcement resolves that uncertainty.
What Mercedes confirmed for the 2027 GLS 63
Mercedes-Benz USA announced the production 2027 AMG GLS 63 on June 15, 2026, with U.S. dealership arrival scheduled for fall 2026. The timing is a forecast, not confirmation that vehicles are already available. See the Mercedes-Benz USA announcement.

A revised V8 with mild-hybrid assistance
The confirmed engine is a revised 4.0-liter M177 EVO biturbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, updated intake camshaft and fuel injection, and exhaust aftertreatment. Mercedes lists 603 hp and 627 lb-ft. Its ISG 2.0 mild-hybrid system can provide up to 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of support. Mercedes estimates 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds and electronically limits top speed to 174 mph.
So the answer to “Is the 2027 AMG GLS 63 getting a new V8?” is yes in the sense that it receives the revised M177 EVO generation and the engineering changes Mercedes describes—not a different displacement. The V8 remains a 4.0-liter unit.

Chassis and exterior changes
The production model adds an AMG-specific redesigned front end and new LED lighting signature. Mercedes also names an AMG Performance exhaust, AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension and AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization. These are among the confirmed updates; the 2025 prototype report’s exterior observations were still preliminary.
What the production cabin is like
Mercedes-AMG’s June 2026 release describes a latest-generation AMG Performance steering wheel with direct-access AMG DRIVE UNIT buttons. Cabin choices include several Nappa leather and MANUFAKTUR upholstery options, available AMG carbon-fiber trim and a microfiber headliner. The MB.OS displays can show performance information such as torque distribution, G-forces and engine data. Mercedes-AMG’s release lists the AMG-specific cabin details.

Mercedes has not provided a final 2027 U.S. price in the cited release or model page. The available 2027 information establishes the new model’s specifications and equipment, but it does not provide a full, quantitative comparison with the outgoing GLS 63. A direct year-over-year claim about price, power gains or other deltas would therefore go beyond these confirmed details.
