Did the fatal seat incident happen in a Telluride or a Palisade?
Hyundai Motor America’s recall filing for the Palisade records one fatality potentially involving third-row seat operation. It also records four reports of minor injury involving second-row operation. These are manufacturer-reported claims, not independently verified incident totals or a measure of risk across all vehicles.
The Kia Telluride recall is a separate filing. Kia’s report does not identify a fatality. Although both recalls concern powered seats and occupant or obstruction detection, the available records do not establish an identical defect or root cause.
What vehicles are covered by the Kia recall?
Kia recall 26V173, also identified as SC366, covers 568 potentially involved 2027 Telluride Hybrid SX Prestige and X-Line SX Prestige vehicles equipped with the optional Executive Package. Kia’s filing identifies vehicles built from February 2 through March 13, 2026. What is the reported Telluride problem?
Kia says the power second-row seats may fail to detect an occupant or obstruction during automatic fold-and-stow or one-touch tilt-and-slide operation. At the time of the filing, Kia stated, “Cause is currently under review” and “Remedy is under development.” The filing therefore does not establish the current repair status for an owner’s vehicle.
How is the Hyundai Palisade recall different?
Hyundai recall 26V160, known to owners as Recall 296, covers specified 2026 Palisade and Palisade Hybrid Limited and Calligraphy vehicles. Hyundai reported 61,097 potentially involved vehicles across the listed variants. Its filing describes second- and third-row powered seats that may not respond to contact as intended. What should Telluride owners do?
- Check the VIN. Use Kia’s recall resources or NHTSA’s VIN lookup to check whether the vehicle has an open recall. A model, year, or trim match alone does not confirm eligibility. NHTSA recall lookup
- Contact Kia or an authorized dealer. Ask for the current status of recall 26V173 / SC366 and whether a remedy is available for the specific VIN. Kia’s cited filing documented a remedy under development at the time it was submitted, not necessarily the status today.
- Follow Kia’s filed interim guidance. Kia advised that children should not be in the rear seats or rear seating area while power-folding operation is underway, and warned against inadvertent operation of the seat switches. Follow any newer instructions Kia provides for the vehicle.
Do not assume the Palisade software update applies to a Telluride. The recalls have different affected populations and filings, and Kia’s cited report does not identify Hyundai’s remedy as a Kia repair.

What is the Palisade remedy?
Hyundai says its remedy is a software update that changes the seat system’s response. According to Hyundai’s Recall 296 owner information, eligible vehicles enrolled with an active Bluelink subscription account may receive the update over the air (OTA). Hyundai also says a dealer can perform the update at no charge if an owner prefers not to use OTA or the installation fails. Confirm eligibility and current instructions using the Palisade’s VIN.
Hyundai describes changes that include requiring the tailgate to be open for seat stow, disabling infotainment folding controls, requiring press-and-hold operation for certain switches, changing the second-row walk-in sequence, and updating seat detection logic. These are details of Hyundai’s Palisade remedy, not Kia’s Telluride remedy.
