What the GT adds
Jalopnik describes the GT as adding a head-up display, ambient lighting, sport seats, simulated shifts, sound effects and launch control. Its reported 288 hp and 345 lb-ft are the highest output figures listed in the article. Those features may appeal to drivers who prioritize a sportier presentation, but they do not establish lower running costs or a better value for every buyer.
What the first drive was like
Erin Marquis drove the EV3 around Victoria, British Columbia, at Kia’s invitation. She described the Land as quiet on relatively pristine uphill roads, with responsive but numb steering and quick acceleration from a stop. The article credits wheel foam, aerodynamics and sound-dampening glass for reducing noise.

On the return route, Marquis found the GT-Line ride rougher over dips, gravel and divots. She also qualified that impression: road conditions and her own inexperience with rough mountain roads may have contributed. These are subjective press-drive observations, not instrumented testing or a guarantee of how the vehicle will feel on a buyer’s roads.
Marquis also reports that level-three i-Pedal regeneration could bring the EV3 to a full stop and that reverse operation regenerates energy. The article does not provide an independently measured efficiency result or a controlled comparison.

Charging and everyday practicality
The report describes the EV3 as using the 400-volt version of Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform, offering short- and long-range batteries and standard NACS charging. It gives a 10-to-80-percent DC fast-charge time of 29 to 31 minutes depending on model. These are figures reported by Jalopnik; confirm them against current Kia specifications for the exact trim and market before relying on them for trip planning.
Standard NACS charging makes connector compatibility a useful ownership check, but it does not by itself answer whether a particular home charger will work for your setup. Check the charger connector and vehicle compatibility, as well as your home’s electrical capacity and installation requirements. No particular charger model was tested or endorsed in the report.

The economic framing in the headline is a hook, not a promise that buying an EV3 will cure financial stress. The New York Fed’s September 2026 Economic Heterogeneity Indicators update, using data through August 2026, said differences in national retail spending excluding autos and in gas spending persisted across income, education and race or ethnicity. It also reported national inflation 0.6 percentage point higher for low-income households than for high-income households. The New York Fed notes that these indicators are not official estimates of the Bank, its President, the Federal Reserve System or the FOMC.

That context does not establish that this vehicle is affordable for a particular household, or that it will save a particular buyer money. Jalopnik’s article does not provide a total-cost-of-ownership analysis, insurance quotes, financing terms, incentives, independently measured efficiency or charging-cost comparisons. To judge your own costs, compare the local out-the-door price and financing with your budget, and account for insurance, charging access and your driving needs. The reported starting MSRP alone is not a complete ownership-cost figure.
What the press-drive disclosure means
Jalopnik’s article discloses that Kia paid the writer’s travel, hotel and meals for the Victoria press drive. That context matters when weighing the first-drive impressions: they are useful initial observations from a manufacturer-organized event, not the result of a long-term ownership test or an independent instrumented evaluation.
