The iX3 also won World Electric Vehicle, scoring 828 against the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Nissan Leaf. The electric-vehicle category considers factors including value, range, charging, adaptability, energy, mass, and innovation.
That double victory is the defining result of the 2026 program. It means the jury judged the iX3 the strongest overall vehicle in the competition and the strongest electric vehicle in its category. It does not mean the iX3 is automatically the right choice for every buyer: local price, trim availability, charging infrastructure, incentives, service support, and household needs can change the decision. The awards’ global eligibility and judging framework is different from a country-specific buying comparison.
The World Car Awards describes this as BMW’s second overall World Car of the Year win and the iX3’s double win in 2026.

The Lucid Gravity won World Luxury Car with an official score of 786. It finished ahead of the Volvo ES90 and Cadillac Vistiq.
The Gravity’s strongest listed evaluation areas were dynamics, infotainment, exterior design, and performance. Its value and significance scores were lower than some of its other dimensions, which is a useful reminder that a luxury-car award is not the same as a value-for-money recommendation.
This was Lucid Motors’ second World Luxury Car victory. The Lucid Air previously won the category in 2023.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N won World Performance Car with a score of 783. The BMW M2 CS and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray were the other two finalists.

The results show especially strong scores for the Ioniq 6 N in dynamics, performance, innovation, and infotainment. Its win follows Hyundai’s 2024 World Performance Car victory for the Ioniq 5 N.
The performance category is not open to every fast or sporty vehicle. According to the official performance-car release, eligible vehicles had to be produced at a rate of at least 1,000 units per year and sold in at least two major markets on two continents during the applicable eligibility period. The Ioniq 6 N was selected from an initial field of 20 contenders.
Firefly is the 2026 World Urban Car
Firefly won World Urban Car with an official score of 772. The Hyundai Venue and the Baojun Yep Plus / Chevrolet Spark EUV completed the final three.
Firefly led the finalists in several design, interior, infotainment, innovation, quality, and value-related dimensions listed in the official results. The World Car Awards identifies this as the first World Urban Car win for Nio / Firefly.
The award result alone does not establish where Firefly is sold, how much it costs, which powertrain or trim is available in a particular country, or whether it has a local service network. Buyers should verify those details with a current regional source before treating the award as a shopping recommendation.
Mazda 6e / EZ-6 wins the design award
The Mazda 6e / EZ-6 won World Car Design of the Year with 321 points. The Volvo ES90 scored 310 points, while the Kia PV5 scored 284.
The slash construction is the official award naming and should be retained when discussing the global result. The model may use one name or the other depending on the market, so a local article should follow the name used in that market.

How the World Car Awards are judged
The World Car Awards evaluate new or fully redesigned vehicles sold in multiple markets on more than one continent. Jurors test-drive and assess eligible vehicles during the award season, with the program focused on automotive excellence, leadership, and innovation.
For 2026, 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their professional evaluations. KPMG tabulated the final vote results, according to the winner announcements.
The 2026 schedule was:
- September 2025: Road to World Car 2026 officially launched.
- January 6, 2026: finalists announced.
- March 3, 2026: top-three selections announced.
- April 1, 2026: winners announced at the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan.
The official timeline provides the program’s published sequence of announcements.
What the six awards do—and do not—tell you
What they are useful for
- Identifying vehicles that earned broad recognition from an international group of automotive journalists.
- Spotting major industry trends, including the strong showing of electric vehicles in the 2026 results.
- Creating a shortlist for further research, test drives, and comparisons.
- Understanding how different types of vehicles were recognized across overall, luxury, performance, urban, electric, and design categories.
What they do not prove
- That a winner has the lowest price or operating cost in your market.
- That it offers the longest range, fastest charging, best acceleration, or best fuel economy.
- That it has the strongest independent safety rating or long-term reliability record.
- That the exact winning trim is available in your country.
- That the vehicle will have convenient dealers, parts support, warranty terms, or charging access where you live.
- That all six winners use the same type of powertrain. The award results should not be used to make that blanket claim without separate model-specific verification.
The official scores represent a jury result. They should not be presented as reproducible road-test, crash-test, range, charging, or reliability measurements unless an independent source supplies those tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to use the awards when choosing a car
- Start with the category that matches your needs. The overall winner is not necessarily the best urban runabout, luxury vehicle, or performance car for you.
- Confirm the local model and trim. Names, specifications, equipment, and availability can differ between countries and regions.
- Check the complete purchase cost. Compare local transaction prices, taxes, incentives, insurance, financing, and expected maintenance.
- Verify practical ownership details. For an EV, examine home-charging access, public-charging coverage, charging compatibility, and realistic local-trip requirements. For any vehicle, check dealers, warranty terms, parts, and service intervals.
- Read independent tests and safety information. Award scores do not replace instrumented testing, crash ratings, or owner-reliability data.
- Drive the exact version you might buy. Ride comfort, visibility, controls, seating, and cabin usability are personal judgments that a global jury award cannot settle for every buyer.
Do not confuse the six vehicle awards with Person of the Year
The six vehicle categories are World Car of the Year, World Urban Car, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Electric Vehicle, and World Car Design of the Year. The program also announces other honors, including World Car Person of the Year. That separate recognition should not be counted as a seventh vehicle-category winner.
