The redesigned 2026 Toyota RAV4 gives U.S. shoppers a hybrid or plug-in hybrid choice, but its strongest matchups depend on which kind of electrification you want. Against the Honda CR-V Hybrid, the RAV4 has more system horsepower and higher cited fuel-economy ratings; the CR-V offers more maximum cargo space. Against the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, the RAV4 PHEV has a substantially longer stated electric range, while the Tucson gives rear passengers more legroom.
These are representative comparisons, not a ranking of every compact SUV. Compare the regular hybrids separately from the plug-in hybrids, and check the exact grade and drivetrain: not every RAV4 powertrain is offered on every grade.
What changed for the 2026 RAV4?
Toyota’s May 20, 2025 U.S. announcement introduced the sixth-generation RAV4 and a lineup built around hybrid-electric (HEV) and plug-in hybrid-electric (PHEV) powertrains. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive availability depends on grade. Toyota groups the design options as Core, Rugged, and Sport; those labels do not mean every powertrain and drivetrain combination is available across all three. Toyota’s launch announcement and its U.S. RAV4 specifications are the places to confirm current grade details. Toyota says its specifications are U.S.-specific, may vary by region, and can change without notice.
2026 RAV4 Hybrid vs. Honda CR-V Hybrid
This is the more useful matchup for shoppers who want a conventional hybrid without plugging in. The figures below come from Honda’s 2026 comparison, a manufacturer-authored page; ratings vary by drivetrain and grade.

Where the RAV4 Hybrid leads
In Honda’s comparison, the RAV4 has 32 more system horsepower and higher EPA fuel-economy ratings than the CR-V Hybrid in the listed corresponding drive configurations. EPA figures are standardized ratings, not a guarantee of what a driver will achieve; speed, weather, terrain, load, and driving style affect real-world mileage.
Where the CR-V Hybrid leads
The CR-V Hybrid’s listed maximum cargo capacity is 6.1 cu. ft. greater. Honda also counts more standard driver aids on its comparison page. Equipment counts are the manufacturer’s framing, not an independent assessment of how useful or effective each system is.

Honda lists Google built-in as standard only on the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid and unavailable on the RAV4. It also lists floor mats as standard on all CR-V trims, while RAV4 mats cost extra except on Woodland. Confirm exact equipment and accessory fit for the grade and powertrain you are considering.
2026 RAV4 PHEV vs. Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid
For shoppers who can charge regularly, compare the RAV4 PHEV with the Tucson PHEV—not with the regular-hybrid CR-V figures above. Edmunds’ September 2026 comparison reports Toyota estimates up to 54 miles of electric range for most RAV4 PHEV trims and 48 miles for GR Sport; its GR Sport test reached 58 miles. The Tucson PHEV’s cited EPA electric-range figure is 32 miles. The test result is specific to Edmunds’ test and should not be treated as the rated range for every RAV4 PHEV.

Range estimates and EPA figures are not directly equivalent to a promise of daily electric-only driving: temperature, speed, terrain, and charging habits affect use. Edmunds also notes that Toyota navigation and voice functions require an internet connection and subscription after the trial period. Check the connected-service terms and included equipment for the specific vehicle before purchase.

Choose the RAV4 Hybrid if
- You want a conventional hybrid and value the RAV4’s higher horsepower and cited EPA fuel-economy ratings against the CR-V Hybrid.
