Road-test results show why estimates are not promises. The Drive’s Joel Feder reported 30.6 mpg from the trip computer on a 631-mile highway drive above 70 mph in an AWD Hybrid rated at 36 city / 32 highway / 34 combined mpg. Car and Driver reported 24 mpg in one 75-mph test of a Hybrid MAX Platinum AWD and 29 mpg in a 75-mph test of a mechanically identical long-term Limited AWD. Those are publication-specific results from different vehicles and tests, not predictions for every owner.

Why does the Grand Highlander interior feel cheap?
“Cheap” is a subjective impression, not a measured durability rating—and reviewers do not agree on the cabin as a whole. In his October 8, 2026 review, Joel Feder of The Drive wrote, “The materials throughout the cabin are cheap, hard, and can even scratch.” He said a fingernail marked the hard dashboard plastic. He also praised the center armrest’s soft-touch finish, storage cubbies and physical climate controls and volume knob. Those are observations about his test vehicle, not proof that every trim has identical surfaces or that the materials fail a durability test.
Edmunds gives the cabin a more favorable assessment, describing soft, padded surfaces where they matter and solid assembly. It criticizes the fake-looking wood trim and notes road, ambient and acceleration noise. Consumer Reports says fit and finish compares poorly with the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride and Subaru Ascent, while describing its tested Grand Highlander as comfortable and roomy. Taken together, the reviews point to a cabin that may feel practical and well assembled to one shopper but underwhelming in material choice to another.

If cabin finish is a deciding factor, inspect the exact trim you would buy. Run a hand over the dashboard, doors and console, check the trim pieces you see most, and decide whether the surfaces feel acceptable for the price. Do not assume an attractive online photo settles the question.
Does the Toyota Grand Highlander have a third row adults can use?
There is useful space back there for a three-row SUV. Toyota says the Grand Highlander seats up to eight and describes an adult-sized third row. Edmunds also calls the third row adult-accommodating, and Consumer Reports describes it as adult-friendly. The Drive’s Feder found it usable around town for his 5-foot-10 frame. That is a reviewer’s fit assessment, not a guarantee of comfort for every adult on a long trip.

Seating capacity and access deserve separate checks. Depending on configuration, the vehicle is available with different second-row layouts. The Drive found the second-row fold-and-slide mechanism could not be operated with child seats installed. If you regularly use car seats, bring them to a test drive and try the actual access routine before choosing a layout.
How much cargo space does the Grand Highlander have?
Edmunds reports 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row. Toyota lists up to 97.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity with the rear seats folded; The Drive’s spec box gives 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.9 behind the second row and 97.5 behind the first row. These figures describe different seating positions, so the maximum applies when passenger rows are folded away.

Choose by priority rather than treating one version as an upgrade for everyone. Toyota’s listed Hybrid LE AWD is estimated at 34 combined mpg, while its Hybrid MAX Platinum AWD is estimated at 27 combined mpg. Car and Driver reports 362 horsepower for the Hybrid MAX and describes it as much quicker than the base Hybrid, but less thrifty. The MAX is the power-focused option; the regular Hybrid is the more efficient fit for buyers focused on fuel use and family space.
