Those are meaningful upgrades for rough roads, snow and camping trips, but the specifications alone do not establish how it performs on a particular trail. Subaru lists 9.3 inches of ground clearance and a 3,500-pound maximum towing capacity; neither figure substitutes for checking route conditions, payload and the owner’s manual.
What changed for the 2026 Forester Wilderness?
Subaru’s Wilderness package is built around equipment intended to make the Forester better suited to uneven, loose or slippery surfaces. The principal changes are increased ride height, all-terrain tires, front underbody protection, revised drivetrain gearing and more specialized X-MODE settings. Subaru describes these features as capability upgrades; the available specifications are not an independent trail test.
More ground clearance and underbody protection
Subaru specifies 9.3 inches of ground clearance for the Wilderness. Its 2026 brochure lists 8.7 inches for other Forester models, a difference of 0.6 inch. Subaru attributes the Wilderness clearance to longer coil springs and shock absorbers, and lists front underbody protection; the brochure identifies an aluminum-alloy engine skid plate. More clearance can help reduce the chance of the vehicle contacting the ground over a bump or rut, but it does not by itself establish approach, departure or breakover performance, or guarantee that a route is passable. All-terrain tires and full-size spare
Standard equipment includes Yokohama GEOLANDAR all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch matte-black wheels, plus a full-size spare. Compared with a road-focused tire setup, all-terrain tires are intended to offer a more suitable tread pattern for loose or rough surfaces. Tire performance still depends on conditions, pressure, wear and driving technique; the equipment list is not a comparative tire test. Subaru’s materials establish the factory equipment, not fitment for a particular aftermarket replacement.

Revised gearing for low-speed driving
The Wilderness uses a revised Lineartronic CVT with a shorter final-drive ratio. Subaru says the gearing is intended to improve low-speed off-roadability and states that the vehicle can climb a grade of up to 40 percent. Treat that grade figure as a manufacturer claim, not an independently demonstrated result or a promise that every surface, load or approach will be manageable. How do X-MODE and the hardware help in snow or on trails?
Dual-function X-MODE provides Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings. Subaru says these modes allow additional wheel slip to help the vehicle move through adverse conditions. In practical terms, the settings are designed for surfaces where a more permissive response can help maintain progress; they are not a guarantee of traction on ice, deep mud or steep terrain. Choose a route and pace appropriate to conditions, and do not rely on a driving mode to overcome inadequate clearance, tires or traction.

What are the towing and roof-rail limits?
Towing: 3,500 pounds maximum
Subaru rates the 2026 Forester Wilderness for a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. That is the manufacturer’s maximum rating, not a recommendation that every trailer weighing that much is suitable in every situation. Trailer weight, passengers, cargo and other vehicle loading constraints matter. Check the owner’s manual and the vehicle’s applicable loading limits before towing; the figure alone does not specify a safe setup for a particular trailer. Subaru 2026 Forester Wilderness features.

Roof rails: 800 pounds static
Subaru’s 2026 brochure describes reinforced roof rails as supporting up to 800 pounds of static load. Static capacity applies when the vehicle is stationary; it is not the safe load rating while driving. The moving-load limit and compatibility of particular racks, cargo boxes or rooftop tents are not established by that figure. How does it compare with other 2026 Forester trims?
Subaru’s published specifications show the Wilderness has 0.6 inch more ground clearance than other 2026 Forester models. Its all-terrain tires, full-size spare, underbody protection, dual-function X-MODE and revised gearing are the more relevant differences for buyers who regularly encounter rough access roads, snow or loose surfaces. The 3,500-pound towing rating and reinforced rails may also matter for particular camping or hauling plans, subject to the limits noted above.

Who should consider the Wilderness?
- It may suit you if your regular routes include gravel, rutted access roads, snow or other surfaces where the factory all-terrain tires, added clearance and underbody protection are useful.
- It may suit you if the X-MODE settings, full-size spare or rated towing capacity match a specific trip or equipment need, provided you confirm vehicle loading and accessory requirements.
- A less trail-focused Forester may be enough if you mostly drive on pavement and do not expect to benefit from the Wilderness-specific tires, protection and ride height.
