The 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series could be the best SL for someone who wants a quieter, more cushioned open-air luxury car with unmistakable Maybach styling. It is not the quickest or sharpest SL: independent tests found the AMG SL 63 faster, and the Maybach’s U.S. starting price is $224,900 before destination. “Best” depends on whether comfort and exclusivity matter more than performance and value.
What is the 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL 680?
The SL 680 Monogram Series is a two-seat convertible roadster and, Mercedes says, the first two-seat roadster in Maybach history. It takes the current SL’s open-top format and V8 power and gives it a Maybach-specific design and more comfort-focused tuning. Mercedes-Benz positions it as an extravagant, sporty model; that is the automaker’s description, not an independent verdict.
For the U.S. market, the SL 680 is offered in two design concepts, Red Ambience and White Ambience. Standard visual details include two-tone paint, a Maybach-patterned acoustic soft top, an illuminated grille, rose-gold accents, 21-inch forged wheels and a Crystal White Nappa leather interior with floral stitching and Maybach emblems. MANUFAKTUR paint choices and a Maybach hood pattern are optional treatments, rather than standard equipment on every car.
What does it cost in the U.S.?
Mercedes-Benz USA announced an MSRP of $224,900 for the 2026 SL 680 on August 13, 2025. The manufacturer’s September 29, 2025 U.S. quick reference guide lists the same price and specifies that it excludes $1,350 for destination and delivery. That is the published starting price, not a guarantee of dealer inventory or transaction price. Road-test cars cost more. MotorTrend listed a $227,350 base price and $233,850 as tested in its first test. Car and Driver’s January 2026 test listed $227,350 base and $238,850 as tested; its example included a $6,500 hood pattern and a $5,000 multi-spoke wheel option. These are publication-specific test-car figures, not a replacement for Mercedes’ stated U.S. starting MSRP.
How powerful is the SL 680?
Mercedes’ U.S. specifications list a handcrafted 3,982-cc, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 577 hp at 5,500–6,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque at 2,500–5,000 rpm. Power goes through a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission to 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. Mercedes estimates 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds and lists an electronically limited top speed of 161 mph. Those acceleration and speed figures are manufacturer specifications, not instrumented test results.

The same U.S. guide lists EPA fuel economy of 12 mpg city, 20 highway and 15 combined. That is the manufacturer’s published figure in its September 2025 guide; other reviews may display different EPA numbers, so figures should be compared only with their source and context attached.
Is it as fast and sharp as the AMG SL 63?
No, based on the available instrumented tests. Car and Driver recorded 3.4 seconds from 0–60 mph for the SL 680 and cited 3.0 seconds for the AMG SL 63. MotorTrend independently measured 3.6 seconds for the Maybach. These are separate publication tests, not one definitive result; both place the Maybach’s acceleration behind the cited SL 63 figure. Car and Driver’s 2026 instrumented test and MotorTrend’s first test also describe the SL 680 as less sharp than the AMG.

The character change is more important than the small differences among test times. Car and Driver reports a softer chassis, additional sound deadening, a Maybach drive mode and gentler responses. Its first drive praised the more compliant ride over uneven pavement and the relaxed steering and throttle response in Maybach mode. MotorTrend similarly found comfort took precedence: it considered the car engaging on winding roads, but less forceful and precise than the AMG. The Drive also characterizes it as a luxury car first and a sports car second, with road-trip comfort weighed against bulk and limited cargo room.

The SL 680 remains a substantial two-seat roadster, not a practical four-seat grand tourer. Mercedes’ U.S. guide lists a 106.3-inch wheelbase, 184.9-inch overall length, 4,409-pound curb weight and 7.5–8.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The guide also lists ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension, standard 2.5-degree rear-axle steering, a front axle lift system and driver-assistance equipment. Its dimensions and equipment help explain why comfort and maneuverability features matter, but they do not change the two-seat layout or modest luggage allowance.

That means the Maybach’s premium buys a different balance, not an across-the-board upgrade. You get distinctive Maybach finishes and a quieter, more relaxed roadster experience; the AMG SL 63 is the clearer choice if acceleration and sharper responses are the priority. Less expensive SL alternatives may make more sense when Maybach exclusivity is not the deciding factor.
Is the SL 680 the best SL ever?
There is no objective all-time ranking established by these specifications and road tests. The SL 680 is a strong candidate for a buyer defining “best” as a cushioned, insulated, open-air luxury car with the most overt Maybach presentation. It is not the obvious winner for a buyer who defines best by speed, steering sharpness, utility or price. Consider the AMG SL 63 if performance character leads your priorities; consider the Maybach if you would rather have a more composed touring experience and are willing to pay substantially more for its design and exclusivity.
Mercedes-Benz’s Head of Mercedes-Maybach, Daniel Lescow, described it in the automaker’s May 13, 2025 announcement as “the sportiest and most extravagant model we’ve ever created.” That statement captures the brand’s intent, but it should not be mistaken for a claim that the SL 680 is objectively the best SL across generations. Mercedes-Benz’s announcement presents the car as an open-air Maybach experience; the AMG comparison and instrumented tests show the trade-off buyers need to weigh.
