The 2026 Lexus RZ 550e F Sport is a substantial update, but it does not erase every concern: it brings more power, a larger battery, faster charging hardware and a North American NACS port, while real-world range remains a key question. In Ars Technica’s week-long test, reviewer Jonathan M. Gitlin found things to like, but the car averaged 2.5 miles per kWh in chilly February weather and its simulated manual shifts may not appeal to every driver.
What changed for 2026?
Lexus revised the RZ with new motors and a new battery, and added a native NACS charging port for North America. For the US-market RZ 550e F Sport AWD, Lexus lists 402 total system horsepower. That is the manufacturer’s specification, not a road-test measurement. Lexus USA announced the model-year changes in 2025.
The update also raises onboard AC charging capacity from 7 kW on the prior model year to 11 kW. That can make a difference when charging at home or another compatible Level 2 station, though the car can only use the power available from the electrical supply and charger. An 11 kW-capable home setup may require suitable electrical service and installation; check the vehicle’s connector and your home’s capacity before choosing equipment.
How much range does the RZ 550e get?
Lexus estimates approximately 229 miles for the US RZ 550e F Sport on 20-inch tires under ideal conditions. This is a manufacturer estimate, not an EPA rating. The current EPA-estimated range is not established by the available figures here, so the 229-mile number should not be treated as an EPA result or a guarantee of everyday driving range. Gitlin observed an average of 2.5 miles per kWh during a week with the car in chilly, but not sub-freezing, February weather. At 50 percent state of charge, the RZ’s display showed 88 miles remaining. Both numbers come from one vehicle and one test period; they are useful context, not a prediction for every driver, season or route. Cold weather, speed, terrain, climate control and driving style can all affect an EV’s usable range.
How quickly does it charge?
Lexus says the 2026 RZ can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes on DC fast charging under ideal conditions. The company cautions that weather and other factors can change charging times. Its stated onboard AC capacity is 11 kW, up from 7 kW in the prior model year. Lexus’s charging information provides the ideal-condition qualification for the DC estimate.

In the Ars Technica test, the RZ charged from 43 to 80 percent in 26 minutes and took on 35.2 kWh. That single session is not a universal charging benchmark, but it gives a practical example alongside Lexus’s idealized 10-to-80 estimate. The reviewer also encountered a positioning challenge at a Tesla Supercharger: the cable had to reach the RZ’s NACS port, so the vehicle’s placement relative to the charger mattered.
What is the virtual manual mode like?
The 550e’s virtual M Mode uses paddle shifters to simulate an eight-speed manual shifting experience, including simulated engine and exhaust sounds. It is a software-driven effect, not a conventional transmission or a change to the electric motors’ underlying operation. Lexus presents it as an engaging driving mode; Gitlin’s review flags the synthetic shifts as a concern. Whether the feature adds fun or feels artificial will depend on how much a driver enjoys deliberately simulated gear changes in an EV.

Is the 2026 RZ 550e worth its price?
The Ars review excerpt lists $58,295 for the 550e and $47,295 as the RZ lineup’s entry price, but it does not clarify all fees or establish current transaction prices. Those figures should not be read as a current dealer quote or a complete, verified current MSRP. The evidence available here also does not establish a current full US price list, so shoppers should confirm the exact trim, equipment and fees with Lexus or a dealer before comparing offers.
On the merits, the 550e combines all-wheel drive and 402 total system horsepower with a significantly updated battery and charging setup. The trade-off is that the listed 229-mile range is a manufacturer estimate under ideal conditions, while the one road test recorded modest efficiency in chilly weather. This is a better-updated RZ, but the available information does not support ranking it against other luxury electric SUVs without comparable range, price and road-test data.

Verdict
The 2026 Lexus RZ 550e F Sport is more compelling on paper than its predecessor: Lexus has addressed important hardware shortcomings and adopted NACS for North America. Gitlin’s test suggests the experience still comes with compromises, particularly the range observed in cold-weather use and a virtual shifting mode that may divide drivers. It is worth considering for its power and revised charging hardware, but buyers should verify current EPA range and pricing and weigh the car’s real-world range needs against their own driving.
