Edmunds reviewer Reese Counts also found real compromises: cargo space trails most rivals, the standard 4×4 system lacks low range, and the price makes value harder to defend. Jeep’s version is hybrid-only and does not plug in.
What Edmunds thought after its first drive
In Edmunds’ February 23, 2026 first-drive review, Reese Counts described a cabin that feels more premium than most crossovers in the class and called out useful space for rear passengers. He found the ride compliant and the hybrid powertrain smoother than expected. His caveat: the Cherokee is not sporty or especially fun to drive, and its price is difficult to justify against its strengths. These are first-drive impressions, not conclusions about long-term ownership.
Counts also found the cargo area less competitive than the passenger space. Edmunds measured 33.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 68.3 cubic feet with them folded. Jeep says the new model has 30% more cargo capacity behind the second row than the previous Cherokee; that is Jeep’s own comparison, not an independent measurement. Read Edmunds’ first-drive review.
Is the 2026 Jeep Cherokee a hybrid, and does it need to be plugged in?
Yes. The Cherokee is offered only as a hybrid, and it is not a plug-in hybrid: there is no charging port or need to connect it to an outlet. Jeep says regenerative braking supplies electricity to the hybrid system. The company lists a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid with 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque.

Jeep publishes fuel economy of 37 mpg combined, with 39 mpg city and 35 mpg highway; its launch announcement called the combined figure an estimate. These are manufacturer figures, not an independent or real-world result from Edmunds’ drive. Jeep also claims more than 500 miles of range per tank. Is the Cherokee 4×4 or AWD?
Jeep Active Drive I 4×4 is standard, according to Jeep. That is useful traction equipment, but it should not be mistaken for a dedicated low-range off-road system: Edmunds says the Cherokee’s setup has neither low range nor a transfer case. At the time of Edmunds’ review, the lineup did not include a Trailhawk trim. Ground-clearance and approach/departure-angle figures published by Jeep do not, on their own, establish equivalent capability to purpose-built off-road models.

How much does the 2026 Jeep Cherokee cost?
Jeep announced a U.S. starting price of $36,995, including a $1,995 destination charge, in August 2025. Edmunds tested a Limited with options priced at $45,180. These are figures tied to the launch announcement and reviewed vehicle, not a guarantee of current inventory pricing; confirm the price and equipment with a dealer before buying. Edmunds’ criticism is that the Cherokee’s asking price weakens its value case, especially when its cargo space and fuel economy do not lead the class.
How does it compare with the RAV4 Hybrid, CR-V and Forester?
Edmunds’ comparisons are directional rather than a same-trim specification audit. Counts says the Cherokee is longer and provides more rear passenger space than some rivals, while its cargo volume is below most rivals. He also says its efficiency is not as good as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s. The available comparison does not establish a complete, current price, towing or equipment matrix across the RAV4 Hybrid, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester, so those points should be checked trim by trim rather than inferred from the Cherokee’s headline specifications.

Can the 2026 Cherokee be flat towed, and how much can it tow?
Jeep says the Cherokee cannot be flat towed; doing so could damage the drivetrain. Jeep lists a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. Treat that as the manufacturer’s stated maximum, and consult the owner’s manual and vehicle-specific equipment requirements before towing.
What safety and driver-assistance features are listed?
Jeep lists Active Driving Assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, forward collision warning with active braking, blind-spot monitoring and drowsy-driver detection among the standard driver-assistance features. A 360-degree surround-view camera is listed as available. Feature packaging can vary by trim and configuration, so verify the specific vehicle’s equipment.

Who should consider the Cherokee?
The Cherokee looks most appealing to shoppers who want a standard-4×4 hybrid SUV with a comfortable ride, a polished-feeling cabin and room for rear passengers. It is a less obvious fit for buyers prioritizing maximum cargo capacity, best-in-class hybrid efficiency, an off-road low-range system or a compelling price-to-space ratio. Edmunds’ first drive suggests Jeep has made a well-rounded return, but not one without meaningful trade-offs.
