The 2026 Honda Prelude returns after a model-year 2001 exit, but it is not a simple revival of the old formula: the sixth-generation coupe is a hybrid, and Honda presents it as both a new passenger-car offering and a way to grow hybrid sales. Its significance lies in that combination—an established nameplate attached to a different kind of powertrain and a new role in Honda’s lineup.
Why did Honda bring back the Prelude?
Honda’s press kit traces the Prelude across five generations through the 2001 model year; the 2026 car is the sixth generation. Honda says the nameplate introduced innovations during its history, including four-wheel steering and the Active Torque Transfer System. The new model therefore reconnects Honda with a familiar badge while making clear that the product itself has changed.
Honda framed the return as a way to support both its passenger-car lineup and its hybrid-electric expansion. In a September 2025 announcement, Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda National Auto Sales, said: “The Prelude’s return demonstrates our commitment to exciting, fun-to-drive vehicles and will help to accelerate our hybrid-electric sales in the years ahead.” In November, she described the return as demonstrating Honda’s commitment to expanding hybrid-electric sales and its passenger-car lineup. Those are the company’s stated aims; they do not establish how well the car will sell or how buyers will respond.
What is new about the 2026 Prelude?
It is the first electrified Prelude
Honda calls the sixth-generation car the first electrified Prelude. Its powertrain pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine with Honda’s fourth-generation two-motor hybrid system. Honda publishes 200 hp of total system output and 232 lb-ft of traction-motor torque. The torque figure belongs to the traction motor, not to the whole system.

For the U.S. model, Honda reports EPA fuel-economy ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 highway, and 44 combined. These are regulatory ratings, not a promise of the mileage an individual driver will see. Driving conditions and habits affect actual consumption.
It uses a different kind of drive system
Honda’s explanation is that the traction motor drives the wheels through a fixed ratio, with a lock-up clutch blending engine power into the drive. The specifications list a direct drive unit and front-wheel drive. This is not a conventional stepped automatic or a CVT, even though the car offers transmission-like simulated behavior through S+ Shift.

S+ Shift simulates gear changes
Debuting on the sixth-generation Prelude, Honda S+ Shift coordinates engine RPM with paddle inputs to create simulated shifts, including downshift blips, rev matching, and gear holding; Honda also says it enhances engine sounds. It is a programmed performance-transmission experience, not a conventional gearbox with selectable physical ratios. Honda has said it plans to feature S+ Shift in future hybrid-electric models. The available official descriptions explain the system’s intent and operation, but do not establish how convincing it feels from behind the wheel.
What does the Prelude share with the Civic Type R?
Honda says the Prelude is its first hybrid-electric model to use high-performance chassis hardware derived from the Civic Type R. The launch announcement names dual-axis strut front suspension, wide front and rear tracks, large brakes, and an adaptive damper system tuned for the Prelude.

Honda describes the setup’s target as grand touring: precise steering and responsive handling alongside everyday comfort. That is the manufacturer’s design brief, not an independent driving assessment. The shared hardware signals that Honda wants the hybrid coupe to have an enthusiast-oriented chassis, while the car’s own tuning and real-world behavior require separate evaluation.
How does the Prelude fit Honda’s hybrid strategy?
In November 2025, American Honda said hybrid-electric models represented about one-third of Honda sales and that it planned to expand hybrid application to over 60% of total auto sales in the coming years. These are dated corporate figures and an aspiration, not independently verified current market shares or a guarantee. Honda’s positioning of the Prelude connects a recognizable passenger-car nameplate to that strategy: the car is both a coupe and a showcase for a hybrid system with performance-oriented features.

The combination matters more than treating the car as either a nostalgia exercise or a conventional economy-focused hybrid. Honda is using the return to make its hybrid expansion part of a product story about driving character. Whether that positioning translates into broader sales or a lasting shift in the lineup remains to be seen.

Honda’s November 2025 launch announcement gave a single launch figure: $42,000 MSRP plus a $1,195 destination charge, or $43,195 before taxes, registration, and options. The later current model page lists the additional Two-Tone configuration, so the launch figure should not be read as the price of every present configuration or as an out-the-door quote.
The specifications list 2+2 seating and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The published U.S. drive modes are Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual. These details give a practical outline of the layout, but they do not by themselves establish rear-seat comfort or cargo capacity.
What the comeback does—and does not—tell buyers
The return is a meaningful change in Honda’s product mix: a nameplate absent since the 2001 model year now anchors a hybrid coupe with Type R-derived chassis components and a simulated-shift feature. The official specifications establish the powertrain, ratings, layout, and equipment Honda is offering; they do not establish real-world fuel economy, independent handling results, dealer transaction prices, or market success. Buyers weighing the car against alternatives should compare current local pricing and EPA ratings alongside drivetrain design, seating practicality, and independent evaluations when available.
