The 2026 Honda Prelude is a front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe with 200 horsepower of combined system output, an EPA-rated 44 mpg combined, and chassis hardware that Honda says is drawn from the Civic Type R. Its S+ Shift feature simulates the feel of performance gear changes; it is not a manual gearbox or conventional stepped transmission. Honda announced a $42,000 starting price in November 2025, when it said U.S. dealer arrivals had begun.
What the 2026 Prelude is—and who it is for
Honda has brought back the Prelude as its first electrified version of the nameplate, describing it as a hybrid sports coupe with a grand-touring role. That positioning signals a blend of sporty styling and everyday efficiency, rather than establishing how the car performs on a track or against rivals. The U.S. model combines a two-motor hybrid system with front-wheel drive and a four-seat liftback body.
The key distinction is the mix of priorities: the powertrain is designed around hybrid efficiency, while Honda pairs it with performance-oriented suspension and brake hardware. Buyers who want a traditional rear-drive sports coupe or a manual transmission should note that the Prelude offers neither.
Powertrain, horsepower and transmission behavior
Two-motor hybrid system
The U.S. Prelude combines a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle, direct-injection four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery. Honda lists 200 horsepower of total system output and 232 lb-ft of traction-motor torque. The specification sheet separately lists 181 horsepower for the traction motor; that figure should not be added to the engine’s output to estimate combined horsepower, because peak outputs do not necessarily occur at the same time. S+ Shift is simulated, not a gearbox
Honda S+ Shift uses paddle shifters and software to simulate a performance-transmission experience, including virtual rev-matched downshifts and enhanced engine sounds. It works alongside Linear Shift Control, which links the engine’s rev feel to vehicle speed. These features alter the driving experience, but they do not make the hybrid system a conventional multi-speed automatic or give the car a manual transmission. Honda describes the feature in its U.S. reveal announcement.
Fuel economy and fuel requirement
Honda’s specification sheet lists EPA fuel-economy ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 44 mpg combined for the 2026 U.S. configuration. It calls for regular unleaded gasoline. These are manufacturer-published EPA figures, not a promise of the mileage every driver will achieve; conditions and driving habits affect real-world fuel use. The ratings should not be applied to Prelude versions sold in other markets.

Chassis, brakes and wheels
Honda says the Prelude is the first of its hybrid-electric models to pair the two-motor hybrid system with high-performance chassis hardware from the Civic Type R. The company’s specifications list:
- Dual-axis MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.
- Adaptive dampers.
- Brembo four-piston aluminum front calipers, ventilated front discs and solid rear discs.
- 19 x 8.5-inch wheels with 235/40R19 all-season tires.
“Type R-derived” describes the hardware context; it does not establish that every component is identical to the Type R, or prove a particular level of track performance. The Honda specification sheet provides the component details, while Honda’s reveal announcement explains the positioning.

Price, trim and U.S. availability
Honda announced a $42,000 starting price for the U.S. 2026 Prelude on November 18, 2025, and said dealer arrivals had begun. Honda described the U.S. car as one well-equipped trim. The announcement is a dated starting-price figure, not a current quote for a particular dealer or buyer: inventory, incentives and transaction prices vary by location and date. Market timing differs outside the United States. Honda Global said Japan sales would begin September 5, 2025, and announced a monthly sales plan of 300 units for Japan. That figure is a Japan-specific plan, not a U.S. sales target. Details appear in Honda Global’s Japan announcement.

Passenger and cargo practicality
Honda lists four-person seating, 32.0 inches of rear legroom and 15.1 cubic feet of cargo volume. The liftback body provides a cargo opening, but the published volume alone cannot tell you whether a particular suitcase, stroller or other item will fit. If the rear seats or cargo area matter to your purchase, check the car in person with your passengers and typical gear; the listed figures do not establish child-seat fit or real-world luggage capacity.
How to judge it against a sports coupe
The Prelude’s official figures clarify its efficiency and layout, but they do not establish its acceleration, handling limits or how it compares on the road with another coupe. An AP News page carrying an Edmunds comparison published August 26, 2026, frames the Prelude against the Toyota GR86; consult the comparison for any specific test results rather than inferring them from specifications.

For a useful shopping comparison, consider the factors that change the experience, not just horsepower: purchase price for the exact model year and trim, independently measured acceleration and handling, driven wheels, transmission behavior, fuel economy, passenger and cargo usefulness, and comfort on everyday drives. The Prelude’s published combination—front-wheel drive, hybrid power, simulated shift behavior and a 44 mpg combined EPA rating—sets it apart from the conventional sports-coupe formula, but whether that trade-off suits you depends on which of those qualities matters most.
