Yes—with an important qualification. The 2026 Honda Passport earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, with Good ratings in the core categories listed on its model page. That makes it a strong safety choice, but not a uniquely safest SUV: several other midsize SUVs also earned the award. And one of the Passport’s ratings relies on testing of a related Honda Pilot rather than a 2026 Passport.
What the 2026 Passport’s IIHS award means
IIHS’s model-specific page gives the 2026 Passport its 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. The page lists Good ratings for small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, updated side, headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention 2.0, and pedestrian front crash prevention. It also lists Good seat-belt reminders and a Good+ rating for LATCH ease of use. Standard blind spot detection and lane departure warning/prevention are listed as well. See the IIHS 2026 Honda Passport ratings.
Not every rating came from a 2026 Passport test
The updated moderate-overlap front test was conducted on a 2026 Passport RTL. IIHS assigns the small-overlap front and updated side ratings to the 2026 Passport using Honda-conducted tests of a 2023 Honda Pilot. IIHS explains that the Pilot was redesigned for 2023 and the Passport was redesigned for 2026. The distinctions matter: the award applies to the Passport, but it would be inaccurate to say that every listed crashworthiness score came from a crash test of a 2026 Passport.
Is it the safest SUV?
The evidence supports calling the Passport one of the safer choices in its class, not the single safest SUV you can buy. IIHS’s March 24, 2026 award release names multiple midsize SUVs that earned TOP SAFETY PICK+, including the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Santa Fe, Kia EV9 and Sorento (for specified build dates), Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 variants, Nissan Murano and Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, and Subaru Outback. The award is strong evidence that the Passport performed well under IIHS’s criteria; it does not rank it above every other winner. Read IIHS’s March 24, 2026 award announcement.

IIHS also reported that more than 77% of the 2026 models it had tested so far met the new vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention standard for an award. That is a cross-model figure, not a Passport-specific result. In the same release, IIHS President David Harkey said, “Stronger structures and better seat belts save lives, but the safest crash is the one that never happens.”
What NHTSA has—and has not—published
NHTSA’s 2026 model-year list includes the Passport among vehicles selected for testing under its 5-Star Safety Ratings program. The list is a testing-selection notice, not a star-rating result; it does not establish a NHTSA star rating for the Passport. Check NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings information.
