Alfa Romeo USA says the U.S. model is gasoline-only, while Alfa Romeo’s European materials continue to list hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The plug-in hybrid has not disappeared worldwide.
Is the 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale still available as a plug-in hybrid?
In the United States, no. Alfa Romeo USA’s 2026 Tonale FAQ answers, “No, the 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale is only available in its gas-powered model for 2026.” That makes the PHEV’s removal a U.S. lineup change, not a global one. Alfa Romeo USA’s 2026 Tonale page is the source for its U.S. availability and specifications.
In Europe, the plug-in hybrid remains part of the range. Alfa Romeo’s UK launch announcement describes hybrid and plug-in hybrid choices, and Alfa Romeo Italy’s 2026 Tonale materials retain the plug-in hybrid Q4. Availability therefore depends on the market; the U.S. statement should not be read as a worldwide discontinuation.
What changed on the 2026 Tonale?
Updated front-end styling
Alfa Romeo USA highlights a new Dark Miron Concave V Scudetto grille and enlarged air intakes. The refresh also adds a new trim and new exterior colors. The U.S. page promotes available multicolor ambient lighting and seat and wheel choices. Alfa Romeo cautions that some images on its page show European models and may differ from North American specifications, so those images should not be taken as confirmation of U.S. equipment.

U.S. powertrain and drivetrain
For the U.S. 2026 model, Alfa Romeo lists a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 268 maximum horsepower and 295 lb-ft of maximum torque. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard Q4 all-wheel drive. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. For the European Tonale plug-in hybrid, Alfa Romeo publishes combined WLTP fuel consumption of 3.7–3.4 L/100 km, combined energy consumption of 12.7–12.3 kWh/100 km, CO₂ emissions of 83–77 g/km, and an electric range of up to 61 km. These figures are for the European PHEV, not the U.S. gasoline-only Tonale. Alfa Romeo says the values were homologated in October 2025 and that real-world results vary with charging frequency, driving style, speed, equipment, tires, outside temperature, and cabin-comfort settings. - If you are shopping in the United States, Alfa Romeo’s published 2026 lineup is gasoline-only, with a 2.0-liter turbo engine, nine-speed automatic, and standard Q4 all-wheel drive.
- If you are shopping in Europe, Alfa Romeo materials continue to show a plug-in hybrid option alongside hybrid choices; confirm the versions offered in your country with its local Alfa Romeo site or dealer.
- The 2026 update brings front-end styling and trim and color changes. The U.S. materials also promote available cabin lighting, seat, and wheel choices.
