The U.S.-market 2025 Volvo XC90 is best understood as two versions: the original 2025 model and the refreshed 2025.5, which Volvo announced in January 2025. The 2025.5 update brings revised styling, a redesigned cabin, an 11.2-inch center display, added sound insulation and retuned suspension. It is an update within the XC90 line, not an all-new generation. Volvo also offers B5 and B6 mild-hybrid all-wheel-drive powertrains and a T8 plug-in hybrid, with six- or seven-seat configurations depending on trim. The specifications and prices below describe Volvo’s U.S. launch announcement; they are not current dealer quotes or independent road-test findings.
What is the difference between the 2025 and 2025.5 XC90?
Volvo labeled the updated U.S. vehicle “2025.5 Volvo XC90” in its January 21, 2025 announcement. The half-year designation distinguishes the refreshed model from the original 2025 XC90. Volvo describes changes to the exterior, cabin, infotainment, sound insulation and suspension; the announcement does not present it as a new generation. What Volvo changed
- Exterior: Volvo redesigned the hood, grille, bumper and fenders, and updated the Thor’s Hammer signature headlights. The refreshed design also includes dark-tinted taillights and new wheel options.
- Cabin: The dashboard and door panels have revised shapes, textures and trim. Volvo’s update page identifies an Orrefors crystal gear shifter and ambient lighting.
- Infotainment: The center display is now a free-standing 11.2-inch screen. Volvo says it is larger and faster, and specifies Google built-in plus standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Noise and ride: Volvo says it added acoustic foam and other noise-reduction materials and retuned the dampers. It describes the revised suspension as improving comfort; that is the automaker’s assessment, not an independent ride or sound measurement.
Volvo’s XC90 update page describes these changes, but cautions that specifications shown may reflect European vehicles and that equipment varies by market, trim and powertrain. Check the build sheet for the specific U.S. vehicle before treating an item as included.
What powertrains are available for the U.S. XC90?
Volvo’s U.S. 2025.5 announcement lists three all-wheel-drive powertrain choices: the B5 and B6 mild hybrids, and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The T8 adds the ability to drive on electric power for a limited distance when charged. For buyers who can regularly charge, that electric operation may be useful; whether it suits a particular driving routine depends on access to charging and how the vehicle is used.

Volvo announced up to 33 miles of electric range for the 2025.5 T8 on a charge, based on EPA driving cycles. The company says actual range varies with driving behavior and conditions. This is Volvo’s January 2025 estimate, not a range result independently measured for this review. It should not be confused with figures using other model years or testing protocols.
The T8 is a plug-in hybrid, not a fully electric XC90. Charging is relevant to making use of its electric driving capability, but the available evidence here does not establish charging times, equipment requirements or energy costs.

How many seats does a 2025 Volvo XC90 have?
The XC90 is offered with six or seven seats, but not every seating layout is available with every trim and powertrain. The six-seat arrangement replaces the second-row bench with two captain’s chairs, which Volvo says have integrated armrests and cupholders. Choose between the configurations based on whether you value a separate second-row seating arrangement or the additional passenger capacity of seven seats, and confirm the exact configuration on the vehicle’s window sticker or build sheet.
Volvo also lists upholstery choices including Nordico, Nappa leather and wool-blend materials. Exact availability is market- and trim-dependent, so the U.S. vehicle’s equipment list is the definitive check.

Is the 2025.5 refresh worth considering?
The refresh’s clearest value is in the features Volvo specifically changed: updated exterior styling, a more prominent center display, revised cabin details, added noise-reduction materials and retuned dampers. Those are meaningful updates for buyers comparing the original 2025 model with a 2025.5 vehicle, but the available evidence does not establish that they make the XC90 class-leading or quantify their effect on ride comfort or cabin noise.
Powertrain and seating are separate decisions: B5 or B6 for a mild-hybrid XC90, T8 for plug-in-hybrid capability, and six or seven seats according to the specific configuration offered. Match those choices to your needs, then compare the actual vehicle’s equipment and current dealer quote rather than relying on launch pricing or assuming all advertised features are universal.
