Volvo estimates up to 32 miles of electric range, 58 MPGe, 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. It is a refined, quick three-row luxury SUV, but its value depends on whether you can charge regularly and prize electric driving enough to justify the price.
What is new on the 2025 XC90 Plug-in Hybrid?
The 2025 XC90 is a refreshed version of Volvo’s three-row SUV. Cars.com describes a more minimal front end, thinner headlights, a wider grille and updated infotainment with a larger screen. Volvo also dropped “Recharge” from the model name; the plug-in version is now called the XC90 Plug-in Hybrid.
Trim equipment and availability can vary by market and configuration. Volvo’s US specifications page lists features for the model family, not a guarantee that every item is included on every vehicle.
How much power and electric range does it have?
Volvo’s US specifications list the T8 AWD Plug-in Hybrid with an 18.8-kWh battery, all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Its figures are preliminary estimates, not guarantees.

Volvo says real-world electric range depends on driving behavior, conditions, maintenance, battery condition and other factors. Cars.com reviewer Jennifer Geiger found the SUV quick from a stop and said it felt lighter on its feet than its weight suggests. She noted that its power delivery is less immediate than a fully electric vehicle’s, but stronger than that of a non-electrified three-row SUV.
What is it like to drive?
Geiger’s Cars.com review describes the XC90 as engaging, comfortable and efficient. She found the transition between gasoline and electric power smooth, and praised the refined cabin. These are the reviewer’s impressions from a T8 AWD Ultra test vehicle, not a claim that every driver will have the same experience.

The powertrain pairs the gasoline engine and electric motor with an eight-speed automatic, according to Cars.com. The electric motor can handle short trips within the available charge, while the gasoline engine supports longer journeys. After the battery’s electric range is depleted, Cars.com reports an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined.
How long does the XC90 Plug-in Hybrid take to charge?
Charging time depends on the equipment and conditions, so the published figures are not interchangeable guarantees.

- Cars.com reviewer’s Level 1 result: About 10–14 hours from a household outlet.
If you are considering a home Level 2 charger, confirm connector compatibility and whether your home’s electrical system needs work before buying or arranging installation. Volvo also lists a portable charger among the vehicle’s features; check the specific car’s equipment.
What features and seating configurations are available?
Cars.com lists Core, Plus and Ultra trim families, with six- or seven-seat layouts. The six-seat version uses captain’s chairs in the second row; the seven-seat layout provides a second-row bench. Check the exact vehicle’s build sheet because trim content and availability can vary.

Volvo’s US feature list includes Google built-in, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless phone charging, an 11.2-inch center display, a 12.3-inch driver display, a 360-degree camera, four-zone climate control and optional premium audio systems. The page does not establish that all of these are standard across trims. Volvo says Google services are included for four years; renewal terms and fees may apply afterward.

Cars.com reports estimated annual fuel costs of $1,700 for the PHEV and $2,350 for a non-plug XC90 in the EPA comparison cited in its review. Those estimates assume 15,000 miles per year and a 45% highway/55% city mix; fuel prices and driving patterns affect the result. They are not guaranteed savings or a personalized payback calculation.

For context, Geiger reported that her equipped T8 AWD Ultra test vehicle cost $88,695 including destination. That is the price of the tested configuration, not a universal current price or quote. Her review’s conclusion was that cost alone may not make the PHEV compelling, while the combination of luxury and electric driving may appeal to the right buyer.
To judge the value for your situation, compare the actual purchase or lease price with how often you can charge and how many of your daily miles could fit within the estimated electric range. Include your local electricity and fuel costs rather than assuming a fixed savings period.
Who should consider the XC90 T8?
- A strong fit: You want a luxury three-row SUV, can plug in regularly, and expect many routine trips to fall within the estimated electric range.
- Less compelling: You cannot charge consistently, most trips exceed the electric range, or the price premium matters more to you than electric driving and luxury equipment.
- Before choosing a trim: Compare six- and seven-seat layouts and verify the actual vehicle’s build sheet for the features you want.
Volvo’s 2025 owner’s manual search result lists premium gasoline with at least 91 AKI for the T8 and recommends 93 AKI for ideal performance and fuel economy. Confirm the requirement in the manual for the exact vehicle and market.
