What the 2025 Volvo EX90 is
The EX90 is Volvo’s large, three-row battery-electric SUV and the company’s software-defined flagship. Depending on configuration, it offers up to seven seats and all-wheel drive. Volvo combines lidar, cameras, radar and driver-monitoring sensors with NVIDIA-based computing for assisted driving and other safety functions. The vehicle is designed to gain features and fixes through over-the-air (OTA) updates.

The good
A useful range profile for a large SUV
The EX90’s EPA-rated range is competitive for a heavy, three-row luxury SUV. Wheel size and configuration matter, so the highest published figure does not apply to every version. That gives the EX90 a practical road-trip profile on paper, particularly for owners who can charge at home.

Quiet, comfortable road manners
Road-test coverage from Car and Driver describes a quiet, comfortable premium experience with strong ride quality and a composed electric powertrain. Those are reviewer assessments, not laboratory measurements, but they fit the EX90’s role as a long-distance family vehicle.
Real family utility
Three rows and seating for as many as seven give the EX90 a clear advantage over five-seat electric luxury SUVs. The second- and third-row access, child-seat fit and cargo volume still need to be checked in person because usable space can vary with seat position and equipment.
A broad safety hardware package
Volvo’s lidar, cameras, radar and driver-monitoring sensors are integrated with assisted-driving software rather than offered as isolated options. Euro NCAP’s five-star result and its report of good protection for critical body regions in major frontal and side tests provide independent support for the EX90’s safety credentials. A test result does not guarantee that every driver-assistance behavior will suit every driver, so evaluate the system on familiar roads.

OTA capability and a planned hardware improvement
The EX90 was engineered around OTA updates, allowing Volvo to revise vehicle software without a traditional workshop visit for every change. Volvo also announced a one-time free core-computer upgrade for 2025 owners. That is useful protection for a software-defined vehicle, although the existence of an upgrade also shows that the launch platform was still being improved.
The bad and the important caveats
Launch-era software maturity
Edmunds identifies software as the EX90’s biggest issue and reports owner concerns that the SUV reached customers before the software was fully mature. Volvo’s later core-computer campaign is evidence of continuing platform development, not proof that every 2025 vehicle has identical faults or that all complaints are resolved.
Before purchase, ask the retailer to show the installed software version, explain which updates have been completed and identify any outstanding campaigns. Ask how the retailer handles a software issue that cannot be fixed through an OTA update.

EPA range is not highway range
Car and Driver’s 75-mph test finished below the EPA range band. Sustained speed, cold weather, wind, wheel and tire choice, terrain and cabin heating or cooling can all widen that gap. Drivers who regularly travel at highway speeds should plan from their own charging network and route rather than treating the EPA number as a guaranteed trip distance.

2025 charging hardware trails the 2026 update
The 2025 model’s charging claim and independent measurement are adequate for many owners but not class-leading. Volvo says the 2026 EX90 adds an 800-volt system intended to shorten charging times. That 2026 specification must not be applied to a 2025 vehicle; confirm the voltage architecture and charging curve of the exact model year you are considering.
Large-SUV trade-offs
The EX90’s size and mass help deliver a substantial cabin and a settled ride, but they can increase energy use, tire expense and parking difficulty compared with lighter alternatives. The cited material does not provide one standardized, apples-to-apples efficiency comparison across every competing three-row EV. Measure your garage, check turning and parking clearances, and price replacement tires before signing a purchase order.

Screen-centered controls
The cabin relies heavily on a large central display and has relatively few physical controls. Some drivers will appreciate the clean design; others may find touch interactions less convenient while moving. This is a usability trade-off to assess during a drive, not a safety-test result.
Check the headlamp software recall
NHTSA bulletin R10298 covers all 2025 EX90 vehicles in the United States and Canada included in the campaign. The bulletin says headlamp software could temporarily close the headlamp shutters and lists an OTA remedy. Have Volvo or NHTSA confirm campaign status by VIN, including on a used vehicle advertised as updated.
How to compare the EX90 with other three-row electric SUVs
Compare the EX90 with the BMW iX, Rivian R1S, Kia EV9, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Cadillac Vistiq using the same route, passengers and questions. The right choice depends less on a single headline specification than on how the vehicle works in your daily life.

- Drive the exact trim, powertrain and wheel size you intend to buy.
- Install your child seats and test second- and third-row access, passenger comfort and cargo space.
- Ask the retailer to document the current software version, the free 2025 core-computer upgrade campaign and all open safety campaigns.
- Charge on your normal home AC setup and at least one of your regular DC networks; record the time and battery percentage rather than relying only on the dashboard estimate.
- Compare the 2025 vehicle’s equipment and transaction price with newer EX90 model years and competing three-row EVs.
Who should buy it?
The EX90 makes the most sense for a family that needs three rows, values a quiet premium cabin and can charge predictably at home or along familiar routes. It is a weaker fit for buyers who want the fastest possible DC stops, dislike touch-heavy interfaces or have no tolerance for software campaigns on a new vehicle.
