The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta GLI pairs a 228-hp turbocharged engine with a roomy five-seat sedan body, a choice of manual or automatic transmission, and a comfortable ride. It is quick and usable for everyday driving, though its performance character is more restrained than that of sharper sport-compact rivals. “Affordable” is a positioning, not a claim that the GLI is the cheapest option or a current deal.
What the 2025 Jetta GLI delivers
The GLI is the performance-oriented Jetta: it adds a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and performance hardware while retaining the sedan’s passenger and cargo utility. Volkswagen lists adaptive chassis control among its performance features and offers a six-speed manual as well as an automatic transmission. The exact equipment on a particular car can vary, so check its window sticker.

The 6.0-second acceleration result is a published test, not a result from CarCody. It indicates capable straight-line pace; it does not establish that the GLI handles better than its competitors.
How it drives: quick, comfortable, not the sharpest
Volkswagen’s output figures give the GLI meaningful power for a compact sedan, and Car and Driver’s manual test confirms brisk acceleration. Drivers can choose the engagement of a manual or the convenience of an automatic. Which transmission is right depends on whether the driver values direct control or easier stop-and-go use; compare the exact cars being considered rather than assuming their equipment or fuel economy is identical.

Edmunds describes the GLI as sporty and quick, but says some rival sport compacts feel sharper and more exciting. That distinction matters: the GLI is a balanced daily driver with performance capability, rather than the obvious choice for a buyer prioritizing the most intense handling character. Car and Driver also wished for higher-quality cabin materials.
Daily practicality and equipment
Room for passengers and cargo
The GLI keeps the Jetta’s five-seat sedan layout. Reviewers describe its cabin as comfortable and spacious, and the trunk is around 14 cubic feet in published specifications. Car and Driver reports that its test trunk held seven carry-on suitcases. That result gives a useful sense of luggage capacity, though suitcase fit depends on shape and packing.

Technology and comfort
Car and Driver’s reviewed car had an 8-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging and BeatsAudio. Those are details of the reviewed vehicle, not proof that every GLI configuration includes every item. Confirm the trim and equipment on the individual car’s window sticker.
Fuel economy in context
Published figures differ by source and configuration. Car and Driver lists EPA estimates of 30 mpg combined, 26 city and 36 highway for its manual test car; a specific 2025 GLI window sticker lists 29 mpg combined, 25 city and 35 highway. In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway test, both gearbox versions returned 36 mpg. That is a test result at a sustained highway speed, not an EPA rating or a prediction for every commute. Its test car averaged 26 mpg overall.

2025 Jetta GLI price: compare the actual car
Published starting figures are not identical: Edmunds lists a $33,215 base MSRP before destination, while Car and Driver lists $33,940 base for its test car and $35,045 as tested for its manual example. These are publisher-reported figures, not a current offer or a guaranteed transaction price.
For a purchase decision, use the actual vehicle’s window sticker and a written dealer quote. Compare the same items across quotes: destination, installed options, dealer charges and any other amount due. A base price alone cannot tell you what a particular equipped car will cost.

Safety ratings: understand which Jetta was tested
The IIHS page for the 2025 Jetta reports Good small-overlap frontal ratings, but its explanatory text says those evaluations were performed on a 2019 Jetta and apply to 2019–26 models. The page also lists a Marginal headlight rating that applies to 2025–27 models, and identifies standard blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking. Volkswagen’s window sticker for one 2025 Jetta GLI, dated June 17, 2025, lists a 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty, 2 years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance and 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance. Those are the terms shown for that vehicle; check the original paperwork for the car you are buying.

Volkswagen’s 2025 order guide, dated July 17, 2024, says Car-Net Safe & Secure service is included and expires five years after the original in-service or purchase date. Enrollment and acceptance of service terms are required. Review the Volkswagen connected-services information and the vehicle’s own documentation for applicable terms.
Who should consider the GLI?
- Consider it if you want a compact sedan with substantially more power than a basic commuter, useful trunk space, and a choice of manual or automatic transmission.
- Compare alternatives closely if the sharpest handling, most exciting driving character, or highest-quality cabin materials matter more than comfort and everyday utility.
- Evaluate the specific car for price, transmission, installed equipment, fuel-economy rating and paperwork rather than relying on a single published starting price or rating.
When comparing sport compacts, use the same criteria for each: price including destination and dealer charges, acceleration and handling character, transmission, ride comfort, fuel economy by configuration and driving pattern, passenger and cargo utility, equipment, warranty and the scope of safety testing. Edmunds identifies sport-compact rivals as a useful comparison set; current prices and features should be checked for the model year under consideration.
