For the U.S.-market 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI, “buttons are back” means physical pushbutton controls return to the steering wheel—not that the cabin has abandoned touch controls. The GTI still uses a 12.9-inch touchscreen for infotainment and many climate functions. All three U.S. trims—S, SE and Autobahn—are listed with a 241-hp turbocharged engine, seven-speed DSG automatic and front-wheel drive; Volkswagen’s model-year guide lists no manual transmission.
What changed about the GTI’s controls?
Volkswagen of America’s 2025 retail guide lists a multifunction steering wheel with pushbutton controls. The 2025 Golf GTI/Golf R Quick Start Guide describes controls for navigating menus, handling calls and choosing stations, presets or tracks. The wheel also has a heating function, and the car includes shift paddles.
The Talk button can launch Volkswagen’s IDA voice control, while the OK button can answer calls. The quick-start guide also says IDA can be activated with the “Hello Volkswagen” wake word and can control functions including navigation, climate, media and telephone. Available prompts and language support depend on system language and whether a myVW account is active; check the owner resources and manual for configuration-specific details.
Are the climate controls physical?
No—not all of them. The 12.9-inch touchscreen remains central to the cabin. Volkswagen’s quick-start guide says many features are controlled through the user-configurable touchscreen. A climate-control bar sits along the bottom of the infotainment display; the physical CLIMA button beneath the screen opens advanced climate settings, but temperature, fan and seat heating or ventilation adjustments are handled through the display. Volkswagen also lists illuminated touch sliders.

That makes the layout a mix: steering-wheel pushbuttons and a CLIMA shortcut alongside touchscreen climate controls and touch sliders. The wheel-button return should not be mistaken for a full return to conventional cabin knobs and switches.
What powertrain does the U.S. 2025 GTI have?
Volkswagen of America’s retail order guide, dated July 9, 2025, lists the same core powertrain for S, SE and Autobahn: a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection, rated at 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Each trim is listed with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic and front-wheel drive.

The guide lists no manual transmission for any of the three U.S. trims. That is the final U.S. model-year specification in the guide, rather than the earlier launch-period uncertainty about equipment. European-market output figures should not be substituted for the U.S. rating.
How do S, SE and Autobahn differ?
Volkswagen’s U.S. retail guide separates the trims most clearly by chassis equipment, tires, climate system and audio. It is a retail guide rather than a technical specification listing, and Volkswagen notes that features and prices can change; it is not a guarantee of current dealer stock.

All three trims are listed with driving mode selection, a VAQ limited-slip front differential lock, XDS Cross Differential System and four-wheel independent sport suspension. The Autobahn’s summer-performance tires may be less convenient in cold-weather seasons or locations; factor in seasonal tire needs when comparing it with the all-season-equipped S and SE.
Seat and convenience equipment also varies by trim and options. Use the dated MY2025 Volkswagen of America retail order guide for the specific configuration rather than assuming every listed feature is standard on every car.

What does the refreshed infotainment system include?
Volkswagen describes the refreshed GTI’s MIB4 infotainment system as using a 12.9-inch display, a configurable home screen and top bar, and a persistent lower bar. The global description also covers configurable Digital Cockpit Pro and the illuminated touch sliders. Those details explain the screen-centered design, but U.S. trim and equipment specifics should be taken from the U.S. guide.
Volkswagen’s global discussion of IDA includes online capabilities, but that does not establish identical U.S. availability, subscriptions or language support. For U.S. owners, the quick-start guide and the vehicle’s owner’s manual are the more useful references for supported functions.

Where can owners find setup help and accessories?
Volkswagen’s 2025 owner resources page links to the quick-start guide, online owner’s manual, maintenance schedule, software help and accessories. The guide also lists a four-piece Monster Mats set and a rubber-mat and trunk-liner kit with VW CarGo Blocks across S, SE and Autobahn. Listings can change, so confirm current availability and fitment before ordering.
For a non-OEM floor-mat search, “2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI floor mats” is a useful starting phrase, not a fitment guarantee. Check the model year, trim, part number and vehicle configuration on any listing; do not assume a third-party product is genuine Volkswagen equipment.
What should buyers take from early launch coverage?
Early U.S. launch reporting captured the steering-wheel button change but appeared before final U.S. specifications were firm. Nick Yekikian wrote for Edmunds on January 23, 2024, “The 2025 Golf GTI gets its steering wheel buttons back.” For questions about U.S. horsepower, transmission and trim equipment, the later Volkswagen of America guide dated July 9, 2025 is the relevant source.
Volkswagen’s guide lists no U.S. EPA fuel-economy figure, acceleration time or measured handling result in the material cited here, so none is included. The “smiles” in the title are not a claim of a personal test drive.
